Rarg

Rarg is a land so perfect that the sun never rises until it is absolutely sure that everyone is awake. It is a wonderful place where everyone loves learning and making new discoveries. Until one day, an astonishing discovery is made... a discovery that might just be a problem.
This BAFTA nominated classic was created by Tony Collingwood in 1989, it is narrated by Nigel Hawthorne and features wonderful music from the London Symphony Orchestra.

Like others here, I've also been searching for this ever since I saw it on PBS as a kid. I only saw about half of it before we had to leave the house and I've been left wondering about it for 27 years now. Thanks for sharing!

I have a VHS recording of Rarg from Long Ago, too! Along with a couple other episodes. It's the story that motivated me to find all the other Long Ago episodes I could find online.

This must be where I watched it. I've been trying to find the name for forever. I think about it all of the time but couldn't come up with the right search terms to find it. Just thought of something a few minutes ago that led me to a reddit post.

I actually thought the ending would make a point out of "the sun didn't rise until it was sure that everyone was awake". Like they brought the sleeping guy into their world, but the sun wouldn't rise anymore because he was still asleep.

PBS should release a DVD set of the series Long Ago & Far Away hosted by James Earl Jones. It had some beautiful animations in it. Also watch The Man Who Planted Trees and The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The Hungarian folk tales were also good ones. Another good series was The International Film Festival hosted by Jean Marsh.

Rarg (1988) producers: Tony Collingwood Productions Ltd /British Screen Finance / NFTS The international succcess of "Rarg" enabled Tony Collingwood to start his own fully-fledged production outfit with producer Chris O'Hare. Their first production was supposed to be a sequel, but the funding routes lead them to turn it into an animated series called "Dream Patrol". One quick name-change later and Captain Zed and the Zee Zone was born. www.toonhound.com/rarg.htm

Reminded "NFTS" stands for "National Film & Television School" which I suppose Collingwood was a student at when he started producing Rarg. Another alumnus from NFTS is Nick Park, who started the first of his Wallace & Gromit shorts there before working for Aardman.

I didn't expect to find this again either. My memories of catching the ending got foggy enough that I remembered it as an army of little people marching into the real world as their leader angrily shouted, "We want to be real!", but existing in reality soon turned them into harmless cherubs for some reason. I guess I must have conflated the flamingos with the cherubic children.

That's the trouble with Google et al, if you don't know what you're looking for you can't find it, which sort of defeats the point! I searched for the fluffy pink men for ages as they were the most vivid memory.

I may have also thought the soundproof suits were the strange creatures they got transformed into! I really didn't know what to think about what I saw, but after seeing info on other old cartoon series with "Dream" in their titles that weren't this, I decided to just try typing in "cartoons about dream worlds" as a search last night, and then I found Rarg pretty fast.

I guess the viewer may decide... but for me I think that he is dreaming everything that happens, including his "journey into dream". And I think that fundamentally it's a fable, that might cause us to question the nature of our own 'reality'.

Dreaming is just a mental thing. It would've been interesting if they'd had a sequence where his dreams became nightmares. Other than that the liklihood is that everyone in Raga would've ceased to be when Edwyn died. Even a dream can't halt the inevitable

Rarg is a figment of imagination of Edwin. Edwin is a figment of imagination of the writer. The writer(real human) is a figment of imagination of God. God is a figment of imagination of Azathoth. Azathoth is the figment of imagination of a sleeping Rargian.
