My father once sat next to Alan Alda on a transcontinental flight (LA to NYC). He told me that he had never met anyone with as much energy and openness. One of my colleagues (Ira Gluck) photographed the wedding of one of Aldas' daughters. He told me that he was open, expressive, organized and willing to work. In my limited experience, I have found that the greater the talent. the greater the generosity.

AR F what happend bettwen you and Alan. Did you speak to each other when you saw him with Carol Burrnet? I really think Alan is a verry nice guy. And I have a crush on him. I always wanted to meet him but ofcource I never will. Because I live in Europe and he is in America. I always admired him and his personality. While I was reading your coment I started crying because I was so happy for you because you got a chance meeting him. And I gave up in that . I mean he is 82 and I live where I live and there is no way I will ever see him. I was so deppresed when he posted on twitter that he has parkinson and I thougt how time flyes and sooner or latter he will die and I would cry so badlly and I would be deppresed. I just wanted him to live for a 100 more years so I can' t now when did he die. I really like him and I think he is the best husband and father and a grandad and I am so happy for you that you met him and have an opertunity to speak with him. Are you two still seeing each other somewher or someghing?... ❤ LY

Bruce Springsteen is like that also. Very generous with his fans. Signs CD covers with real effort and talks directly to the fan - I still have mine over 20 years later. That's why he's in a class of his own as an artist.

M*A*S*H was absolutely wonderful. There will never be another show like it again. The entire cast was wonderful. Like every fan, I have my favorite episodes, but there has never been an episode of M*A*S*H that I wouldn't watch over and over again. I can't say that about any other show. Every season was fantastic, and even at it's weakest point (I have no idea when that would be, since I love it all) M*A*S*H was a million times stronger than any comedy or drama currently on the air. They had good, ethical characters, that you could cheer for despite their flaws. I can't get as invested in any character of a current show like I did with almost every main character on M*A*S*H, the only exception being Frank. I never liked him, or really cared about his problems, but I couldn't completely hate him either.

Barney Miller came out of the same era, and delivered many of the same qualities - ethical, yet flawed, characters; pushing the envelope on social issues; challenging political/social views. It really was the golden age of television.

Arsala Khan Since an anti-semetic is hostile to or prejudiced against Jews, and a Zionist is a person who believes in the development and protection of a Jewish nation in what is now Israel, your post makes no sense to me. Hal Linden the ACTOR (not character) is Jewish and a spokesperson for the Jewish National Fund-U.S. I'm guessing from the last few words of your post you have a problem with Jews, in which case, go elsewhere. This is KZread not a hate chat room.

I struggled with the Frank Burns character as well, though I thought Larry Linville did an excellent job maintaining momentum for five seasons. I don't think the early seasons planted enough seeds for the character to grow the way Margaret Houlihan could, and it's no wonder Larry left the show when he did. It seemed there was just nowhere to go with him. Conversely, the character of Charles is quite possibly my favourite TV character of all time. He couldn't be bullied like Frank was, and was an excellent foil for the hijinks of Hawkeye and BJ. David Ogden Stiers brought such warmth to the character, even in his most pompous moments.

I'm writing my little tribute to MASH for my blog. I was stationed at Ft Carson in the late 70s. We had a Hawkeye character that was our sergeant first class. He was a hoot! Our first sergeant along with our colonel both had the personality of Colonel Potter.I also have a great appreciation for the Major Margaret Houlhan character. I am a veteran and a widow of a veteran. AND MASH was one of our favorite shows. JAG is a close second. Melinda Maybruck Ortega St Augustine, Florida

The show was less a comedy (though extremely funny) or a drama, than an intimate look into the family forced on soldiers by war. They hate why they are there, while loving the people with whom they are thrown.

One problem I had with the Hawkeye character was that He hated the army and wanted to go home and have his own practice. It was made very apparent his loathing for the army, and those that wanted to join. Many doctors join so they can be helpful to those that really need it. Yes they showed his compassion in the operating room, but just from a few episodes it made it clear he's in it for mostly the money.

walleye364 He really wasn't in it for the money. This is a huge misinterpretation. He loathes the army because it is organised killing. He loves life. As a doctor he wants to preserve the life he loves. The army, in his eyes, is only destroying life. He doesn't care about money. Hawkeye said that he was going to crabapple cove to have a small practise. That is not where the money is. He isn't interested in money.

walleye364 begging to differ. Most "military brats" go into it to help pay for college. Speaking from experience. My dad did it, and I know real life doctors who have served tours in Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan who did it to pay for college.

For the money???? How can that be, when there is that episode where he loudly complains about the fact he is not making any, and calculates how much he has lost by being there? He even sends a bill to the army headquarters and gets threatened by the officer who comes to clear up the situation. No, Hawkeye is there because he was drafted and didn't have any choice but to go, it's as simple as that. No, he does not want to be there, but, because he is there, he does do the very best he can, showing compassion for the patients, love for humankind, and distress at how much pain people are capable of inflicting on one another.
