Rare Kienzle clock with Potsdamer Gong

This clock arrived this morning. Apart from a broken glass and the chime rods being slightly out of tune, it was luckily found to be in perfect working order. The Potsdamer Gong movement is unusual in being a two train striking movement adapted to operate a chime barrel, but only at half past. At the hour it just strikes the hour on three notes. The gong block is a typical Westminster block, which luckily has the exact same notes as those of the Garisonskirche in Potsdam where the chime originated. The melody comes from a patriotic German song "Üb Immer Treu Und Redlichkeit". These clocks were made in the 1930s and would never have been sold outside Germany. Hitker was inaugurated in Potsdam and this clock was sold as a commemoration of that event.
Kienzle also built these clocks with excerpts from two other German patriotic songs of the time, "Volk Ans Gewehr" and the "Horst Wessel Song".
Also please note how the chapter ring has been printed with a woodgrain image so it looks skeletonised. I've never seen this done before.
Sorry about the blurred bit when I'm showing the movement.

My greatgrandmother was born in 1902, her old clock in the kitchen had this very rare chime.....she sangs every hour to the chime in her bright old voice.....always exercise faithfulness and honesty ...( üb immer treu und redlichkeit ) after WW2 this chimes were unusual, they were too reminiscent of the prussian military, the potsdammer gong was an invention of kaiser willhlem

I recently purchased a wall clock with this exact chime sequence from the Netherlands. It cost a bit, but given the rarity especially in the United States, I just had to go for it. I especially love clocks with significant historical value, and these undeniably tell a story about a once decadent Germany.

I've finally fitted a new glass (£30 incl. P&P from Meadows & Passmore), and tuned the gong to perfection. I have set the clock up going and I am delighted with it now. Another success story. Right, that's 1 down, 40 plus to go...

You have to trawl ebay.de. This one was sold simply as "Kaminuhr mit Schlagwerk". It was obvious the seller didn't know what he was selling. You have to look at the picture of the movement, if one is included. If it has the extra wheelwork at the extreme right, with the diagonal blade spring, then it is most likely a Potsdamer clock.

Interesting selective strike trains. It reminds me of the HAC 3/4 Westminster chime movements.

This clock is quite different. At half past hour it plays a melody and at the top of the hour it strikes the number of hours. I have never seen this type of clock.

All those nice clocks ticking at once make quite a racket ! Have you been to The Wallace Collection museum near Oxford Circus, every hour on the hour all the ancient French clocks start-a-chiming at the same time; very pretty.

@RTreasures4U Thanks! I don't know why it struck 8 at 10 o'clock, it has struck every other hour perfectly! The only problem is that the cracked glass makes the chime buzzy and distorted. I must also tune that gong...

Hopefully that problem will be solved soon, and when the gong does get tuned it will sound a whole lot better.

This clock is the neatest clock ever! So let me get this straight. It chimes on the half hour and strikes on the hour?

I've come across several variations of this clock, where two barrels operate the chimes as well as time and strike. Some are more elaborate than others and were produced by HamburgAmerican/Junghans/Becker. What I've been told is that these companies started out as competitors and merged in the early 20th century. Canada was flooded with clocks from these makers until the buildup for war made brass and steel hard to obtain. The theory was that the clockmakers came up with the two barrel idea to save metal, but there is no hard evidence of this, just what I was told when I was apprenticing.

OK but as far as I'm aware the Kienzle Potsdamer was introduced as a patrotic breakaway from the "foreign" traditions of Westminster chimes and bim bam striking. In the 1930s Germany was recreating it's own identity, but as we know, it didn't last long. Another version of this particular clock played the first four notes of the Horst Wessel Song.

Potsdamer clocks I've never seen in person, I meant I've seen the two barrels with three trains configuration. However, thanks to your vid, I will definitely keep an eye out for one!

I´ve got a Kienzle wall clock from my grandparents with the potsdamer gong. The special mechanic of the gong is completely different from those used in these chimney clocks, the "bell-bars" (I dont know how you would call them in english, we would say Klangstäbe or Glockenstäbe) are much longer and the gong runs much slower. It came with two other brass cylinders with a different hole structure, which can be placed instead of the potsdam-cylinder using a spring clip. One of them plays the nazi-anthem "die fahne hoch" (horst wessel-lied) and the other one plays "Volk ans Gewehr!" which is also a nazi-era song... both sound quite good, but not as beauatiful as the potsdam gong.

I am intrigued by this, as I have heard of Kienzle clocks playing the Horst Wessel Lied, but I have only heard of the Volk Ans Gewehr chime on clocks by Mauthe. Are you sure the Volk Ans Gewehr drum belongs to the Kienzle? It would be great to hear them all on a video.

@JustInn014 One thing that would ruin the image of a macho Third Reich clock is plinky chime rods! If any tuning is to be done, it will be done with careful filing of the existing rods.

  • @TommyWylie

@Clockmaniac5445 Yes that's right. See the movement demonstration video, also on my channel. It's presently waiting for a new convex square glass and then it just needs two rods retuned.
