11:18 Because of your video....I picked up a copy of that Helen Merrill LP last night.. Saw it sitting in the bin at my local shop as I was checking out. It's a recent repress, but a pristine used copy for $9.99. It sounds fantastic!

you need to keep in touch with that man!! I know an old couple that have at least 20,000+ records but they don't want people coming to their place. I bought a few things from them when they had a spot at a nearby flea market. Unfortunately, Covid pushed them away and they don't sell there any more. I hope to run into them soon because, to be honest, they're both pretty old and who knows what's going to happen to their records if someone doesn't step in.

I think it's hard to find 10" LPs in top shape because they weren't issued with inner sleeves. So if a 10" was played more than a couple of times it was probably scratched up just going in and out of the cardboard jacket.

On the "Miles Ahead" LP (at 9:24), what did you see that let you know right away that it was 1st press? (Maybe you could do a video on this topic: the different factors that go into determining if a record is 1st press. For example, we see SEALED records for sale online that say "First Press", but how would they know that without seeing the Matrix Numbers? Maybe also include in that video, your own insights on Grading the vinyl.....and how grading for 78s should differ.)

I bought a crate of records when I was a kid back in the 1990s at a yard sale for a dollar. It had some great stuff in there, The Beatles, Beach Boys, ELO, Led Zeppelin, The Who, maybe even some rare stuff worth money that I wasn't aware of at the time. Sadly though they got left behind when I moved a few years ago and my 2 brothers ransacked my collection and probably threw away more hidden gems than they kept. If I only had a time machine....

After the recent doubling and tripling of prices, some of the values given in those old Goldmine books might be pretty accurate all of a sudden. I'd be a little surprised if you can get a local customer who can pay the market price for the Helen Merrill. Kulu Se Mama is probably the most difficult Coltrane record - definitely not for everyone. My copy has a lot of surface noise.

There can be big money in Jazz records. I'm no expert on any of this, but i know an old jazz musician who sold his collection for tens of thousands of dollars. Of course there were thousands of records in his collection, going back to the 1940's. Just records he'd accumulated in his long career. A lot of Stan Kenton era stuff, early LP's from the 50's, a bunch of 78's, records up till the 1970's. He told me that jazz is really big with Japanese and South American collectors, and the guy he sold his collection to was from Brazil. He just bought the whole lot in one purchase, gave the jazz musician the price he asked without quibbling, and had them all shipped down to Brazil.

The Brazilian guy you encountered is probably the famous multi- millionaire whose goal is to buy millions of records and try to own a copy of everything ever recorded. He has about 6 employees whose only job is to catalogue everything he buys.

  • @RRaquello

@@mikemyers1912 I don't know, but maybe. That is a crazy obsession, though, on the part of the Brazilian millionaire, but I guess if you got the money you can do what you want. The guy who sold the collection I knew just casually (he lived in an apartment building I worked in) and was an old jazz musician, originally from Italy. I actually saw him shipping the records out. He had them crated up and they were being hauled away in a van.

I just recently got into Bud Powell. I dismissed him for a long time. Vinyl albums aren't always the best way to encounter James Brown. His albums typically featured the current single, b-side and a bunch of tracks from before. In the Jungle Groove and Motherlode are great albums to get and are compilations of his funk side. The cd era really dig JB justice. I'm starting an online compact disc focused shop on Discogs. There was a collector getting out of cds and was selling his Mosaic box sets on Ebay. He had 14 and listed them as a lot with a starting bid of $1,300. I offered 1,000 which is more than what any physical shop would offer as they would sell around $1,400. He sells the better titles off and then asks if I want the remainder of which many were only label specific and focused on earlier 40's jazz. I didn't respond but that's how it goes. I also had someone else state that they had "longboxes" and decided not to part with the discs.
