I was 16 in 1974 - The entire 70’s was a very special and wonderful time - I miss those days.

"I'm an artist.." Richard Dreyfuss (age 26) You can see why Shaw thought he was a dick.

I would say Dreyfuss would regret his comments now. The exuberance of youth probably. It's one of the most iconic films ever and the three characters interactions made the movie.

Surely, Roy didn't die in shame..

I went to see The Shark is Broken, 2 weeks ago at the Ambassador theater London. It's a play about the making of Jaws Co-written by and starring Ian Shaw, Robert's son. It's an amazing experience to watch, almost as if you're on the movie set watching the film being made and the 3 actors getting on eachothers nerves during the breaks between scenes (because the shark is always broken). Ian Shaw gives such a performance, it'll make your hair stand on end, especially when he does the Indianapolis speech. Not only does he look just like his father, boy can he act. If you get the chance, do see it. You'll be glad you did...

I also went to see that, same venue, Christmas 2021. It was brilliant! I've just come back from a trip to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard (August 2022). Great to visit all the sites from Jaws. Must go back! Was too brief a visit.

Wow! What a fantastic & rare documentary from 1974. Thanks for putting this up Ross. Although I had seen clips of the Shaw & Schieder interviews before, I had not seen the whole documentary. Great! One standout for me is Richard Dreyfuss saying taking the role was a mistake. I wonder what he feels about that statement now.

There were so many frustrations with filming and he butted heads with Shaw. He changed his tune once he saw the finished film and the reception to it.

46:00 stuff like that makes the 70's the odd time that it was. The eerie music and strange feeling about stuff.

Watching this for 50 mins is worth it

You could make a movie out of this documentary of making Jaws. This is gold

I grew up only seeing him in a suit and tie on channel 5 (I think it was channel 5!) He is so cool and laid back here:):)

Dreyfuss has had to apologize his entire life for making those comments. The production on this was an absolute nightmare which has become as much a part of legend as the movie itself. But the film as it stands was achieved through the tremendous editing contributions of Verna Fields and the insane importance of John Williams soundtrack. Spielberg was an unknown director at that time and it would be impossible to contextualize the direction this film was going through the belief that skillful editing and a good score could save it. So his frustrations were in all honesty pretty well served. The sad part is he had to say it publicly which could NOT have helped Spielberg's situation when he needed the support of his cast and crew the most. He looked like he was bailing ship on something he perceived as a failed project and wanted to distance himself early. So feeling as he did seemed reasonable if I could be in his shoes. But saying those things to reporters before the film was in the can and in theaters was honestly a betrayal to everyone on the project. There was no good way to say what he said for public consumption and that's probably why he's felt the need to apologize as much as he has.

If SS wanted to portray a whining nasal voiced annoying character than he could not have chosen a better actor than RD. Too bad its not acting...Very unprofessional. My heart goes out to the sharks who were hunted & killed as a result of the movie. They deserve an apology.

Dreyfuss says he made a mistake BEFORE the film but after his tone was veryyyyyyyyyyy Different! Love the footage and the great Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider-tow legends in my book! "Jaws" still remains one of my 5 all-time greatest films and one of my favorite books. As an English professor, I used to teach it instead of Moby Dick. I love Moby Dick but students in the years 1995-2015 didn't have the attention span for Melville so I used Jaws by Benchley. Both have a sea monster and both have an Ahab-Quint!

This is a real gem.

I saw “Shark is Broken” two days in a row on broadway. Sublime. Shaw channels his father and extends his father legacy and makes their relationship unique. A couple of weeks left.

I liked Murray Hamilton in this role and in "Amityville Horror" five years later.

I wasn't born until 81, I always wondered what it would have been like to see Jaws in theaters in the summer of 75 while I was down the shore in Wildwood NJ, where my family and I vacation every year. I probably would have been even more terrified of the water than I always was when ever I went to the beach right after watching Jaws on video

Roy, leisurely telling the reporters how Shaw's Quint dies in the movie...to then being confirmed by Robert Shaw, who'd then proceed to describe how his on screen death's gonna go, in the movie. Boy, imagine spilling the beans on how the storyline goes towards the end, in an interview..OPENLY, during the shoot, nowadays, on a Marvel movie..!! 😂😂😂😂

The host of this documentary appears to be the late Don Harris of NBC News, killed in Jonestown, Guyana 1978 and survived the fall of Saigon 1975.R.I.P.

The male host is actually Tom Ellis, a longtime New England newsman who died in 2019. The co-host is Pat Mitchell.

I really enjoyed watching this.

I recognized the Charles Fox OST from "Goodbye Columbus" (1969) right away. Used to love his works for "Love American Style" as kid. One of the best parts of the show.

Robert Shaw has a Richard Dawson way about him in these interviews. I am glad to see that Roy Scheider was very happy in the interviews and seemed to know that he making a classic movie. What is with Richard Dreyfuss what a bitch he was. Complaining and complaining about everything. Probably was pissed off about Shaw bullying his ass throughout the whole film.

Incredibly revealing documentary, demonstrating how films are assembled - and in the case if Jaws and Star Wars, saved - in the edit suite. Poor Dreyfuss... all that worry, for nothing. I suppose his hypercritical nature is what makes him one of the screen greats. Laughton was the same.

Quints role and sharking technique in the movie was mostly based on shark hunter Frank Mundus of Montauk L.I. who had the record of catching largest Great White to date in the waters off Montauk Long Island NY which was a known for Carcharian Charcharias and is Greek for shark.

Quint's methods based on those of Frank Mundus; Quint's accent/dialect, mannerisms and phrases from Craig Kingsbury. So Quint is based on two people.

I guess, the inhabitants of Martha's Vineyard will have as many visitors as Burkittsville after The Blair Witch Project

I cannot believe how they basically give everything away. This aired before the movie released right? Because they literally give away the entire ending of the movie, who the last three characters are, who gets eaten by the shark, etc etc. It's also weird that Richard Dreyfuss sits down for an interview and whines about how his character essentially sucks.

I once was attacked by a Great White Shark in the ocean and scarred him for life.

Just stumbled on to this and have a question: Does anyone know for sure who the male interviewer is? It looks so much like the late actor/TV host Gary Collins that if not there must have been a secret cloning program going on. I even looked up Collins on IMDB and this isn't credited to him, so maybe the old saying about everyone having a double is true. Amazing to see the whole clip of Dreyfuss slamming what he thought was going to be a flop.

Had Dreyfuss been honest in this interview he would've said Spielberg asked me to be in the movie & I said no until I watched myself in a movie I was terrible & thought I wouldn't work again so I begged him for the job. It wasn't until Jaws was a blockbuster he was pompous. He never carried himself like the other cast members.

I thought Dreyfus was exceptional in Jaws. Why he regretted accepting the part I don’t know, I can only assume he was getting a lot of stick from Shaw off screen, who liked to stay in character and so would belittle him as Matt Hooper to keep the tension as real as possible in front of the camera.

you can see why robert shaw didnt like dreyfuss and apparently would give him a piece of his mind on set and bully him even somewhat because dreyfus here does come across a young whipper snapper that takes himself far too seriously and comes across as if he thinks hes too good for the movie, and if you do that infront of an old skool legend like Robert shaw then he will put you in your place and let you know your not this all that brilliant and has alot to learn. yep shaw wouldnt put up with his shit and apparently he really took dreyfuss down several peggs at every opportunity. Roy let them both bicker and didnt get involved haha.

Well, I don't know anything about Quinn except that he was once featured in a song about Eskimos... but, Quint, the fisherman from "JAWS" seems to be pretty robust in this documentary..... and, yeah... Robert Shaw was Irish, I believe

@@Titan52berg Robert Shaw was English. He came from the North West of England near Manchester. He’s buried in the Republic Of Ireland though.

Sad dreyfuss wasnt satisfied with his charcter, i related to his the most being so desensitized to stupid shot that you mock it like the boat having too many people, "theyre gonna die" and hos character had humor.. if he thought hos character was bad then the best charcters now lack depth and logical personality
