I was sitting in a cafe on Jan 1,1953 in Gary Indiana eating breakfast when the news came over the cafe radio that Hank had died. That was real heartbreaking news as I loved Hank as thousands of others did. Nashville was full of great singers and musicians then and Hank was the greatest. 40's,50's and into the 60's had the best men and women singers that ever lived. Great country music ended when we lost these. Wish I could go back and see and hear Hank Williams and Hank Snow and Hank Thompson and Ernest Tubb and Bill Monroe and Patsy Cline and and....

Nearly 70 years after his death Hank still remains the best. No one has ever come close and I doubt anyone ever will. As great a performer as he was (and he remains country's greatest male vocalist), the real sadness is that his songwriting was stilled at 29. Considering that he probably wrote about half of the greatest country songs ever by that age, one can only dream about what could have come if he hadn't died so young.

Yes he did more with twenty nine years of living and a very short recording time than anyone else really has ever done in country music with their whole lives. While alive his disorganized drug and alcohol dominated life and hellacious marriage with a psycho[ath Miss Audrey and general philandering kept him pretty much on the outside of the business end of country music especially at the Grand Ole Opry and killed him quite young essentially due to a drug overdose. The viability of the songs he produced and edited is the lasting legacy. You can contrast Williams with Bill Monroe. Monroe continued the older tradition of playing roots music with an acoustic string band even though he borrowed the most advanced techniques, and played many traditional songs, blues pieces, 19th century sentimental songs, and new songs fashioned after them. Williams fashioned songs--many of the songs that are credited to Williams were written by other people but purchased sometimes for 5 or 10 bucks by Acuff-Rose publishers and refashioned--that pretty much matched the format and singer orientation that popular music moved into after WWII and produced a singer oriented music. It is no coincidence that a big part of his fame and success came from the way that pop singers like Tony Bennett and Dean Martin were able to make smash recordings of Williams songs like this.

I clearly have an understanding of today's music as I make a living performing, recording, and teaching it!! • @snmthecloser

Hank Williams’ lyrics are the tentpoles and pillars of every single word of lyrics ever written in the country genre in the 6 decades following his untimely passing. What you must understand is country music as we know it began here, with this man. The genre did not exist before he melded his prophetic prose together with old-timey blues & jazz of the 20s and 30s along with the music of Jimmie Rodgers. Hank Sr. is the Rosetta Stone of American music. He is more important to the American songbook than any singer that ever existed. The utter brilliance of his genius was in the masterful simplicity of his layered, complex lyrics, and the genius of his voice came from a lifetime of pain, loneliness and suffering which poured from his soul like the tablets down from Sinai to Moses himself.

One season a few years before I moved overseas in 2019, I drove to a different small high school in my county every Friday night to watch a game, sometimes standing on the sidelines near the players. Tickets were $5 per game, a couple hot dogs or a burger with pop at halftime cost about the same and parking was free. Spent less than $100 for the whole 9-week season and had a blast. It is a tragedy and I wish it was different. In that era of 1949-55 there was no shortage of film or video cameras. Synchronized sound was the problem. It took big studios with audio engineers and the time, money and motivation to get someone like Hank on a soundstage. We are lucky to have these old kinescope copies of early television as primitive as it was- of Hank singing. If only I had a stargate or time machine.

The tragedy is that the man drank and drugged himself to death so that he did not live into the era of shows like this being televised and them being videotaped and syndicated and filmed, People talk about Williams but neglect that decisive limitation in his life came from his doing things with drugs and alcohol and also womanizing that most people would find out of order and self destructive. Those behaviors severely limited his acceptance or performance in the emerging Country Music industry especially as it became more and more centered around the Grand Ole Opry and other operations in Nashville, Yes what a waste
