Super interview, really don't miss it, so much is revealed about Franco's personality despite the language difficulties!
To avoid confusion, note that at the time of his debut in Paris in 1964, for the French press, Franco was "officially" born in 1931. Yes, he had deducted a full 10 years from his age (which is why he says he started singing at 20-21). If you're wondering why is that, let Loretta explain it to you in this article: / 240484031254685
The recording of the interview is dated sometime in June 1964 (following Franco's debut at the Opéra), but it was not broadcast until April 1965 under the title "Three Days with Corelli". (Elsewhere, "Three Hours with Corelli") (The presenter added her own comments at this time, which I have included because I think the circumstances of the recording shed a very interesting light on Franco's personality. Although I personally don't buy that this unfortunate format was Franco's idea. It is more likely that the reporter simply showed up without an Italian interpreter and assumed that he knew French anyway... Franco really did have the patience and diligence of an angel to go along with this.)
I've cut out the musical excerpts (I know, sacrilege!) and their accompanying introductions, but for now you can find the full interview series on the France Musique site:

The singing of Franco Corelli is not from the Earth. We in Vienna we are also Franco Corelli enthusiasts forever. We became older, and we are asking ourselves, if the next generation and further generations will be such opera lirica fanatics as we are? Greetings from Vienna, we highly appreciate your enthusiasm.

A gracious amazing interview x
I totally didn’t know that Corelli spoke french!

I didn't know partially, not totally.
Corelli had one of those speaking voices that was so different from his sinking voice. His speaking voice doesn't sound as if he could handle :: "Vittoria !" "VITTORIA !" Like Arroyo having the sweetest speaking voice and then singing that horrible opera _Turandot._
Corelli non ha mai cantato Otello. Anche perche' c'era Del Monaco......
Corelli was born in 1921, and here it says that he's a little bit over 30 years old. So, they are joking, been ironic or the interview is from the 50s.

Neither. For his debut in Paris he simply decided to claim to be 10 years younger. I'm copying here my reply I wrote to another commenter under a '62 interview where similar thing happened: It was a peculiar habit of his to deny years of his age whenever he could, not out of vanity, but as a psychological tactic against critics. Along the lines of "A tenor is as old as he sounds" - since people's perceptions are influenced by their preconceptions, if they knew his real age (given that he really did start his career quite late, at 30), they might notice signs of decline in his voice even where there's none. Also from an article in Le Monde, June 5, 1964: Né à Ancône en 1931, grand, mince et musclé comme un athlète du décathlon, Corelli a la prunelle de velours, le sourire charmeur et les traits voluptueusement mâles de son compatriote Rudolph Valentino. (Born in Ancona in 1931, tall, slim and muscular as a decathlon athlete, Corelli has the velvet eyes, charming smile and voluptuously male features of his compatriot Rudolph Valentino.)

@@FrancoCorelliInfoCenter Very interesting interview and also because of the description of Corelli's wife, who I have heard always traveled with him. In general, if one is already a little insecure, as most artists are, it would be good to have a partner in life who might have a calming or reassuring influence on his or her spouse. As for age. Time waits for no man, but in the opera world it is an unfortunate fact that most theaters hire the young looking and if one is older, but still looks good one is forced to embellish the truth when it comes to age. However, as long as the voice retains a youthful quality age shouldn't matter!
