Rare Coin Recap - Stack's Bowers March 2023 Whitman Expo Highlights
Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles 2023 Spring Expo has recently wrapped up, setting dozens of new price records and realizing a total of $28.5 million dollars. These results illustrate the continued strength of the rare coin market.
Three coins that we personally lot viewed realized strong results.
Leading off the sale was Part III of the Sydney F. Martin Collection, which realized a total of nearly $3 million - highlighted by a circa 1784 Ephraim Brasher (EB) Regulated Brazil 1754-B 6400 Reis that was bid to $168,000.
The top performer in the sale was a 1792 cent in copper with a silver plug pedigreed to the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation. Graded MS-61 BN by PCGS and approved by CAC, this historic and controversial coin brought $576,000.
And finally, this 1854 Kellogg & Co. $20 graded MS-65 (PCGS) CAC brought more than 60% above the prior all-time record when it sold for $552,000. This was an expected high price as a collector friend who is in the market for similar material told me on the eve of the sale that he expected this coin to bring over half a million dollars.
Rare coin auctions happen all of the time in this internet age, we expect to see more eye-popping prices on great rarities in the months to come.
