Raptors Mailbag! Bring Back Gary? Should Gradey Start? When Will The Team Contend Again?

Will and Alex answer listener questions about: Bruce Brown (again), Gary Trent Jr.’s free agency market, the Raptors’ timeline for contending, the team’s identity for next season, if Gradey Dick should start, what Davion Mitchell can bring to the team, what to expect from the upcoming 30th anniversary season, and Jakob Poeltl’s future with the team. Later, the two discuss assorted topics including the Raptors’ summer league roster, Canada’s Copa America run, the origin story of green onion cakes in Edmonton, and more.

Problem with GTJ is his highs are VERY high but the lows are downright atrocious. When his shot doesn't fall he is a negative on the floor. At least Gradey seems to have a good eye and makes decent passes. I'd definitely prefer to see way more Gradey than GTJ next season even if Gary is back.

The expression make hay, is short for make hay when the sun shines. It refers to cutting the hay when the sun is shining because it is best cut and bailed dry or else it goes mouldy. It means that you should do something that needs to be done when you have the opportunity.

Something you didn't mention in soccer is that the club is buying the player but players have the choice to accept or not the transfer, you need an agreement between the buyer the seller and the player that's a huge different for me compared to American Sports. There is more dialogue between players/agents and their clubs about staying leaving accepting offers.

Look at the contracts that are going out in free agency.. Klay got like 15 mil a year, derreck jones jr got 10, Hield 9mil, Oubre 8 mil, Gary harris 7 mil. The market is probably about 8 mil a year right now for Gary. . At this point If gary is holding out for a bigger deal I dont see it coming. Personally Im just letting gary go because Id rather other players get the minutes, like Grady and Walter who both will be better players than Gary. Bobby Webster said at the presser today in an intereview maybe theyd be talking in Vegas. To me thats suggesting if theres a better offer in the next week take it. He also swallows and blinks a thousand times when the question comes up so it clearly made him nervous. Wemby is what Wilt Chamberlain was back in the day just with modern flair.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if the Raps pull an Orlando Magic type jump either this year or next year. Looking at those two teams, I don't see much of a difference in terms of talent. Paolo is great, but Scottie is around his level too I think. I just think the Magic are deeper, but with the rookies the Raps got, I think their depth can be just as good soon too. Need to move Bruce & Chris first though. They're probably the guys gone at trade deadline.

Overpaid for a big that you can't close with. Can't hit free throws or space the floor. I still want to see how he plays with the new core beyond 10-15 games. He has good IQ and is a threat within 8 feet. I still want to see how it works. He was originally brought in (on an overpay in assets), to try and get the FFV and Pascal core into the playoffs, and to help develop Koloko. The topic of trading him has been floating around for a good two months.

What has Gary done in the last 3 seasons other than turn 25? Gradey is arguably better than him at passing , cutting, and finishing at the rim already. I agree he's worth keeping on MLE, but that's the max. And he should learn how to lead a bench if he wants to sniff 20m ever again.

Over 82 games every player's fg shooting is inconsistent that's why season ending stats are the end all variable. For reference go look at Steph Curry's shooting stats for every game last season - he was very inconsistent. After all that GTJ still led the NBA in wide open 3fg percentage and shot 39% from 3fg for the season. All the best...
