Rakim was more pivotal than the rest. He changed the game into what it is today. He made it to where MC’s would go back and put thought into their rhymes, also he sounded totally different than what they sounded like back then. Rappers after Rakim weren’t scared anymore to come out with different styles because rakim broke that mold. Listen to anyone in 1986. Then listen to rakim in 1986. They all had that rundmc/melle Mel/koolmoedee/llcoolj type of flow. Rakim in one day made them sound old school. He was maybe still is the freshest one to ever come out.

My personal 5 no order Pac, Em, Kendrick, Jay, Wayne. Those 5 I can listen to just about any tape or album from them and love it. In 2022 I STILL listen to the 5 names I mentioned. Honestly I believe Rakims fire died out a bit too fast. He was heading into Pacs level 100% but he dropped off way faster than Jay, Em or Wayne. You can say KRS, meth, Redman, Biggie etc but I personally never really bumped them besides Biggie and some Wutang joints.

Inspectah Deck’s opening verse of triumph has to be the greatest opening verse on any track of all time !

In the limited amount of time Pac & Big became legends is incomparable

I really like the fact that Jay-Z always mentions Big & Pac first. He knows how great they were and doesn't disrespect it. Also, he definitely knows how much bigger they would've been had they not been killed.

A shame Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap don’t get thrown in with Rakim as they should. When I was coming up i studied all 3 of them simultaneously and they were all ahead of everyone else in terms of flow, word play and style. Special Ed also and was only 16 when he dropped “youngest in charge”. Completely ahead of its time, and he was 16. Never mentioned in top lists but always one of my biggest inspirations no doubt

So many ways to go that I can't think of.

Being from Ireland 🇮🇪. I love these videos because I get to search for people I’ve never heard of. Rakim was a great shout out. My first taste of the music was a cassette tape of NWA when I was 10. Hooked. Music is the best way to share culture. Check out traditional Irish music, different but some amazing stuff. The great thing is a top 5 is nearly impossible because there are so many greats. 2Pac had me against the world, all Eyez on me one and two, Makaveli, and five or six other albums that were released after he died they were all excellent

off the top: Rakim, Outkast, Nas, Em and Twista w/ Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, LL Cool J, Wu Tang, Public Enemy, Cyprus Hill, RAtM, NWA, KRS1, Missy, Queen Latifah, Leaders of the New School, Ruff Ryders, Def Squad Yankee & the Brave and Bone Thugs as my honorable mentions Definitely, will change as time goes on (and partly why I used groups instead of individuals, mostly because this list would be too long). I still need to listen to more of Biggie & 2Pac (and Digital Underground ftm).

@@mikenickerson9640 Kendrick always felt like a more mature Pac to me. Pac has classics, but quality-speaking Kendrick obviously takes it. GKMC and TPAB are some of the best albums ever. But it's hard to compare two goats of their respective generations. It's like comparing Jordan to Lebron. Jordan had bigger achievements but he wouldn't beat Lebron 1v1

My top 5 would be 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay and Em for the effect and influence they had on hip hop. My favorite 5 would be El-p, Slug of Atmosphere, MF DOOM, 2Pac and Brotha Lynch since they're the artists I like the most and enjoyed in all my time listening to hip hop. Honorable mentions to everyone in the Wu, Outcast, Kanye, Mos Def, Kweli, P Monch, Black Thought and the Roots, Sean Price and BCC crew, Little Brother and Justus League, Jean Grae, Brother Ali, Aesop rock, Evidence, all of Doomtree, Common. Too many other greats to mention.

My Top 5 would be: 1-2Pac 2-B.I.G 3-Eminem 4-Rakim 5-Nas

You just said it. “Skilled.” You have to factor in impact and influence. “Skilled” or technical rap is niche, and will generally never be super popular unless you make things catchy. People aren’t alway trying to be analytical with their music. Music that affects your emotions will always be more popular and influential. Simplicity with the complexity.
