I've never understood this obsession with creative speed. Is creativity a speed contest? The faster, the better? Is this song fundamentally better as a 30-minute composition than if it had taken 30 hours? Is a speedy artist to be respected more than an artist who grinds it out? John Denver wrote Annie's Song in 10.5 minutes on a ski lift, all by himself. If speed is how we value creativity, then Annie's Song is magnitudes better than Your Song, and/or John Denver is magnitudes better than Elton John and Bernie Taupin combined. OR. Maybe speed is irrelevant to the value of the work, nor does any particular anecdote about how much/little time one work took give us a comprehensive assessment of the artist. So why do these "created in 84 seconds!!!!! while hammering nails!!!!! in a hailstorm!!!!! while the baby was screaming!!!!!" items get repeated endlessly as THE most noteworthy thing about a work? My personal observation about artists is that I'm not aware of a single one who was purely a speeder or a grinder. Each work tends to have its own pace. So every artist with a fair number of works under their belt has almost certainly been through both hills and valleys -- creations that came almost instantly, as if from on high; while others had to be sweated for, wrestled with, for days, weeks, months or even years. It's the artists who have struggled greatly and expended insane amounts of effort over certain works, who are able to most appreciate the creations that appear swiftly, fully formed, in their heads. Maybe that's why these "created in 84 seconds" stories exist? Because perhaps a speedy work is a rarity and a gift. A lightning strike of the muse.

@@jannasomewhere2889 No, Bernie says Elton doesn't have the patience to take more than about twenty minutes to compose. Of course a lot of the music is added in the studio by the musicians themselves, but he generally writes the tunes in just a few minutes. On the program "Inside the Actors Studio" Elton was given poems and he showed how he could come up with a melody for just about anything in just a few minutes. Someone even game him an instruction manual to a refrigerator and he came up with a tune with the instructions in it and sang it to the audience.

My beautiful wife of 20 yrs was born in Alcapulco and we met during our freshman year of college. She was on the soccer team and I played baseball. We hit it off from the first time we met and began dating. After a month of dating, I played this song for her, she had never heard of Elton John, and I said this is how I feel about you. After the first verse, she was in tears but listened the whole way through. When it ended, she looked at me, tears flowing and said I Love You with all my heart. We got engaged and married our junior year. 20 yrs and 4 beautiful children later, we still consider this "Our Song".

Sir Elton John is a huge rabbit hole to dive into. Arguably, his most acclaimed music spans most of the 1970s. But he had a huge career comeback in the 1980s with hits including "I'm Still Standing" (great 80s video!). While he has written songs in the past, his songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin is one of the most successful in history. I'm not kidding. Elton John is music royalty in the UK. He played at Princess Diana's funeral on September 6, 1997.

This song was written in the late 60's when Taupin was just 17. No one is sure if he wrote it for someone or not. Bernie won't say. Bernie has said that the love is viewed from a point of innocence & naivety. Classic song!

He didn't have any money when he recorded this. This was his last chance. He has said that if his trip to America was not successful, he could always get a job working in a record store. He had been recording for almost three years with no hits, and this album was not doing all that well in the UK after the record company spending plenty of money promoting it. Some people at his record company thought they would give him one last shot. They flew him and his band to Los Angeles, booked him at the most popular club in LA (The Troubadour Club) and invited a couple dozen of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood to see his show. They thought they were going to see a serious singer-songwriter and a ballad singer. He kicked over the piano stool and did all out Rock and Roll and Rock a Billy in addition to the ballads. He blew the doors off the place. He got a record deal in the U.S. and toured with big name artists. Five years later he was the biggest selling artist on earth. He has had about FIFTY hit songs including about ten Number Ones, and is in the 200 million record club with Eminem and Madonna and The Eagles. This was his breakout hit.

Terrific synopsis of this musical genius who fortunately teamed with Bernie Taupin to become the legend he continues to be! I was soooo fortunate to see him in concert 3 times...70s, 80s, and his last tour just recently.

Elton John was huge once Your Song hit the charts. After that he was constantly on the charts - at least that is how I remember it. He was my favouite singer and I had every album, including the soundtrack to Friends (not the tv show) one of the earliest movies he and Bernie Taupin wrote for.

Bernie Taupin was the writer on most if not all his songs - Bernie the Lyrics Elton the music and vocals - I think one of the most iconic partnerships that lasted almost 50 years - I listened to him since the 70's to now - always loved him - My adult children bought me tickets to his final world tour in Australia in a country town just before Covid shut it down - I was overwhelmed - at 70 he sang and played as well as in his youth.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to all of EJs songs. EJ composed all the music. Basically, Bernie would write down the prose and EJ would take it to the piano and then there was pure magic. The two of them were one of the best teams in modern music history.

Bernie and Elton are a magical team of music writing and how blessed we are to have experienced it in real time. This song hurt after a breakup but it also had you slow dancing with your love too. Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics and then hands them to Elton to write music to them and then, of course, Elton performs them. It's been a 50+ year partnership. For the Lion King, Tim Rice was brought on by Disney to write the lyrics and Elton again wrote songs for the movie. The SCORE and at least one of the songs, "Be Prepared", was written by Hans Zimmer.

This is the song that put him on the map. I have seen him multiple times in concert. He thanks the USA for putting him on the charts. This came out in late 1970. He collaborated on all his songs with Bernie Taupin. Bernie is the poet, Elton put his words to music. Elton is classically trained. He's amazing.

Albums were made to be listened like a journey. You put them on and listen to them through like watching a movie . They were relatively expensive compared to other eras so artists put a lot of work into them. They were usually driven by a single released on radio but many of the songs on the album were as popular as the single and would be requested.

The 2nd time,y husband won front row tickets off the radio; I could see every note his fingers played on the piano, I got his autograph, it was like being in a dream, and I loved it! ♥️

I don't know how many times I've listened to this song, but you just hit upon probably one of the most brilliant aspects of it, a hidden gem. It is "your" song, as in whoever is listening to it because the lyrics are so generic. EJ's lyricist is his partner Bernie Taupin, and this isn't the first time I've been amazed by his lyrics. For example, there's a song titled Levon, one you need to listen to if you love great lyrics. At one point, the lyrics state "He shall be Leveon, and he shall be a good man. (ritardando) He shall be Levon." And as the last line is slowed down, you can hear it stating that "he shall believe on", as in his faith ensured. Great stuff. Keep going with Elton John, massive rabbit hole.

Elton John wrote *some* of the songs from Lion King, generally the ones with lyrics that you know like Can You Feel the Love tonight. Most of the instrumental music was written by the South African artist, Lebo M, with full versions on his amazing album, Rhythm of the Pride Lands. The song He Lives in You will bring you to tears; I quoted it in my father's eulogy. A lot of those full versions were promoted to songs in their own right for the Broadway adaptation

No, he was responsible for about 2 songs in the Lion King.. Also, Bernie Taupin is the lyricist of Elton Johns catalogue. They have worked together for decades. Elton has a unique talent to come up with compositions exceptionally quickly. There are songs where Taupin sent him lyrics first, and songs where he sent music or melodies to Taupin. Aida, is a musical based on the opera by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Music by Elton, lyrics by Tim Rice.
