I know you would like Rooster by Alice in Chains. 'Rooster' is the nickname of guitarist Jerry Cantrells father. 'Rooster' served and faugh in Vietnam. It's about some of his experiences in the war. It's a beautiful, heartfelt masterpiece. Man in the Box is the news man on TV (the box) feeding the viewers' propaganda.

I have listened to every single song of theirs probably 10s of thousands of times, and every reaction ever made. Layne runs through my veins. They even played a snippet/bumper of Mad Season's I Don't Know Anything either at the last playoff game (or was it the Superbowl?), which I loved. I love Mad Season as well.

In a 1992 interview with Rolling Stone, Layne Staley explained the origins of the song's lyrics: I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf.[11] Jerry Cantrell said of the song: But what it's basically about is, is how government and media control the public's perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home, ya know. And it's just about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you.[12]

Vocalist Layne Staley (RIP) was one of those iconic voices - the likes of which there is no other. He was one in a billion vocal talent! The "vocal specialists" reactors who have reviewed AiCs songs are astonished at what he could do sonically and vocally - they've all given him rave reviews and said things he did with his voice are previously thought impossible to pull off. Layne was gifted. His harmonizing with guitarist Jerry Cantrell are amazing. This was their first breakout hit/single. Most fans like the song ROOSTER as their favorite. others will point to the live unplugged songs: "Down In a Hole" and "Nutshell" His greatest display of vocal talent is "Love Hate Love" live in Paris at The Moore. Listen for yourself why most metal heads agree Layne was a legendary vocalist.

*Alright, BP I got your explanation here...* 'Man In The Box' is actually about new music artists getting signed to record labels for the first time and signing away their artistic integrity for promises of riches to come. But now that they're a year or so into their deal with Columbia Records, they realize they're little more than livestock to be fetted for the kill. The "man in the box" is comparing their situation to factory farming. Their living quality is of no concern to the proprietors; only their margin for profit. If they aren't getting their anticipated return on their investment, then they'll just be kept on the road even longer. Living out of ratty motels and broken down tour buses that have been in service since the 1970s. The "feed my eyes" line comes from their very first dinner meeting they had with Columbia Records executives in the finest restaurant in town. Because they didn't sign the deal that night, the record label didn't pick up their bill for them. The only thing that got fed that night was their eyes by being allowed to look at how the upper crust lives, but not allowed to partake in it themselves because they were broke. Their stomachs stayed empty while their eyes got fed. Had they sewn their eyes shut, they wouldn't have been tempted. The phrase "Jesus Christ deny your maker" is a little misleading. It's actually two separate thoughts. The "Jesus Christ" isn't calling to Christ directly. It's the common exhalation people say when something unusual happens in front of them. They see something shocking, and mutter to themselves, "Jesus Christ...." The "Deny your maker" is still up to interpretation. Most likely, this line was suggested by a producer or someone in the studio to give it more weight and intrigue by attempting to tie it in to the "Jesus Christ" lyric that preceded it.

Quick connection: I worked at a family business. One of the designers had platinum albums of Alice in Chains next to his desk. I thought he was an amazing album designer, later to find out he was Jerry’s uncle - brother to his mom that all the songs were written about. A lot of the back stories were so similar to Kurt Cobain. Dysfunctional white family from poor areas in Washington state. Can see why their lyrics and music captured a whole nation…

AIC is one of my favorite bands! "Man in the Box" is the song that broke them on their major lavel debut. I think that opening riff and chant, along with the chorus hook, and Layne's vocals is why this song is liked. You have to remember (or maybe you're too young?), what was going on in Rock music and what was popular, in 1990! This was about 1 1/2 years BEFORE Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke big, and hair bands like Trixter, Firehouse, Nelson, etc., were the big MTV bands at the time. This was very different to what was the rock norm of the day. Everyone seems to be wanting you to react to "Rooster" next. Not that it isn't a great tune, but I'd say do a reaction to "Rain When I Die", or "Down in a Hole". THEN check out "Rooster"!

Layne Staley could sing his rear-end off. Tragically, like so many during that era, he was a heroin addict, and I hear that in the lyrics of nearly every song they did. He died way too young, and even more tragic, he wasn't discovered until 2 weeks after he passed, by the police and his mother. But that man could sing, and every live performance he proved it. I never heard him sound less than stellar.

I think it's good that you try to find what appeals to people in the pieces and that you are willing to dig a little deeper. Many reactors lack authenticity because they only want to give positive reinforcement to their followers to grow their channel. I clicked on the link for this review because I enjoy you as a reactor, but I don't watch every review you do knowing beforehand that I really don't care for some of the songs. Man in the Box was a song I wasn't sure about because it was popular around the time I mostly quit listening to radio. I did know this, and it took back to that time in my life. Like you, I never really understood the lyrics although something about the power of the vocal performance at that same spot you perked up to has always stuck with me. Great reaction! Thank you

With such a phenomenal vocal talent, there is definitely something there that will grab you. Edit: grunge lyrics are notoriously cryptic, good luck with the interpretation! Some recommendations, if you haven't done them already: "Down in a Hole (MTV Unplugged ver.)," "Would," "Rooster," "Nutshell (MTV Unplugged ver.)" - I could keep going, but this is probably a good start.

Nah Alice Cooper was popular back in the 70s and 80s. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell do the singing on Alice N Chains songs. Every song is a good one.

Trust me, BP, Alice In Chains is one of those bands that grows on you. I wasn’t all that into them when they first broke on the scene in 1990-91, but after seeing them live on one of their first tours (on the legendary North American Clash of the Titans tour) in 1991, I became a dedicated fan to this very day. They’re one of my favorite bands because their music is pretty emotional and speaks on a different level than most bands of that time. Their catalog is varied and diverse but still high quality. This is a deep rabbit hole and a band worth investigating way more. My all time favorite song from them is “Down in a Hole” from their second album, Dirt. Thematically, “Man in the Box” and “Down in a Hole” are very similar. The singer, Layne Staley, struggled with heroin addiction and he was basically giving up and looking for any way to get a handle on it. It’s a cry for help from God by someone who isn’t sure they believe in God. It is confusing, but makes sense when you keep that in mind.

I remember liking and buying this song when it came out in high school (it was so different and provocative) and feeling like I was surely going to hell for listening. But I couldn't stop myself!

I love your reactions to older Rock music Black; I came across your videos recently but have viewed about 50 - 60 of them the past week. Great stuff. One band I would like to see your react to is " Rush ". One of the greatest bands to come out of Toronto. They have a huge discography with heavy airplay on FM stations over the past 40 years. Keep up the great work. I'll be watching...

The song is about censorship which is ironic since the music video was censored. Alice in Chains are a band that you'll probably need to listen to multiple songs to get use to their sound. They have heavy songs & chill songs, you might like the chiller songs(Like Rooster, Nutshell, Down in a Hole, Would). Man in the Box is their more Metal sound & was the song that put them on the map in 1990. AIC are considered part of the big 4 Grunge bands with Nirvana, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden. AIC are most famous for their vocal harmonies(they have 2 singers) & dark lyrics & being the heaviest grunge band. Unfortunately the bassist & lead singer in this video have passed away.
