These lectures are my current drug!!!
Nothing is more engaging than an educated enthusiast! Bravo, Matthias Wivel! He is not only a very good speaker, but he gives what appears an extempore performance, that is in reality a finely balanced mix of fact, analysis, context and opinion, which I very much appreciated. And especially, his comments are accompanied by lots of good detailed images of the painting; other talks in this series suffer from a failure to actually show the painting in question in close up. Thank you!
What an absolutely marvelous lecture, and what a privilege to sit in on it through KZread. Thank you, National Gallery, for sharing these endlessly fascinating lectures. Culture is more important today than ever, thank you for sharing it on such a wide platform 🤍✨ Edit: thank you also to Matthias Wivel for sharing his profound knowledge as well as his brilliant interpretations :)

So blessed by Matthias Wival talk
This man is the quintessence of humanity. Thank you.
Very instructive description of how the body language and facial expressions illustrate the characters’ awareness of their roles in the drama to come.
Thank you very much NG and Mr Matthias Wivel, for offering such a profound lecture! I am absolutely moved! Particularly the closing segment, very enlightening! I always enjoy your lecture, Mr Wivel. Most grateful!

I really enjoy listening to Mattihas.
The National Gallery: this is VERY INTERESTING & INFORMATIVE!
I value Matthias Wivel and his eloquent lectures. He is also one of the curatorial minds behind the current Raphael exhibition at the National Gallery. Be aware that this event may cause fainting or other physical symptoms due to the sheer wonder and genius that is Raphael.
Raphael's paintings are always a pleasure to see for me.
In light of the current exhibition, I found this talk very helpful and well presented.
This artwork is sooooo fascinating! Thank you for sharing this lecture!

Isn't it just! You're very welcome.
Very good, thank you. Nice to have the speaker 'thinking' which provides a sort of natural punctuation and timing for the listener to think too.
These are beautiful talks by people who clearly are themselves enchanted 😊 thank you for publishing
A work of extreme beauty and not a large work but ever so strong and gentle
Mr. Wivel gives a wonderful introduction to this canvas. I have always tended to look down on Raphael as the creator of sugary visual confections, but the speaker really brought me around to looking at the Master in a new way: as the deliverer of a humanistic AND Christian message: "the better angels of our being." Thank you so much, Mr Wivel, you have changed my viewpoint on Raphael lastingly!
Thank you! The painting is a magic drink for the soul!
Can’t get enough of these talks ❣️
Love the passion Mr. Wivel gave to this lecture. I wish l could transport myself into the moment when Raphael through, sketched and painted this or all his paintings.
If he saw something in another’s works and developed it or used it in his own original work it isn’t stealing. It is all part of the great conversation of art, just as it is in the great conversation of science or philosophy. It is only stealing when one appropriates another’s work wholesale, and without attribution.
clear and informative lecture. thank you!
Perfect presentation of a sublime work of art. Bravo, Mr. Wivel.
Thank you very much, NG, most enjoyable!
Profound thanks once again for an excellent talk. I have learned so much, and come away wishing to learn more.
Wonderful analysis!
An absolutely marvelous talk. Does what excellent criticism does - opens doors for the viewer so that their appreciation is deepened. Thank you very much.
Thank you, great preparation and armonious speech.
Grazie per questo meraviglioso discorso.
I love lectures, and lecturers, like this. It poses a simple question and meanders the hell out of it in the answer that proceeds, so in the end you may not hear the simple answer you were looking for, but you are left with enough information to give the answer on your own. Inspiring and informative, thank you! I enjoyed the lecture about Rembrandt's self portrait as well, and I will surely follow other talks too.
This was such a good talk; thank you for sharing!
I like this art expert a lot.A very interesting presentation!
Thank you!
Amazing video! Thanks for the great job 👏
These lectures are so educational! Thank you !!!
What is said at the end of this clip is so vital for today's world. The treasures left by the giants in art, such as Raphael, represent painful truth for humanity to process. We collectively choose what lie ahead for all of us as one community.
Wonderful !
Very insightful
Brilliant lecture. Many enjoyed.Thankyou for this art fest.
I loved this
Very good. Both in terms of analysis and presentational skills, many thanks

Wonderful education!
This was even more enjoyable in Covid19 times. Bravo.
Your presentation gave me a lot to think about which, given my age and LA, USA location, is even more to think about.. Thanks so much.
I just have to catch one of these amazing lectures next time I can go to London and visit the NG...also, it's a bit depressing that I don't think we have such in depth free lectures in our museum...
Superb.!!;-)
Bravo
The lines of the halo. Wow. 5:41
It is good to hear the English language, as it were, in such safe hands. It is music to the ears.
Wonderful painting and ultimate abaout 'pic painting and so nice framed also...👍
I do wish I had seen something like this before I went to to the Ashmolean's exhibition of Raphael's drawings. Everything I saw there was amazing, but I feel I would have been even more amazed [and better informed] if I had seen a lecture like this first. Still, it was one of the best days of my life...I got to see not only all those beautiful Raphael drawings but so many other wonderful things in the museum. My sister and I were there for the whole day.
Worship Raffaello!
No word about the strong symbolic although delicately painted cross image in the hands of the babychild John the Baptist: THE statement of Rafael in the picture......
Bravo! Excellent

Please don't waste the opportunity. So much art and architecture I will never see in person, I am jealous of those who live nearby. I fell in love with Hagia Sophia when I saw a black and white photo thirty years ago. I have always longed to visit, but it will never come to pass. Please go, enjoy, breathe in the beauty that the past has to share.
Tht must of taken a lifetime
I agree!
Thank for schowing mee this kind madonna peace
A famous jewel, a pearl, La Peregrine “ was stolen from the Spanish Royal Palace, a jewel that belong to Isabel of Castilla. Stolen by Napoleon when he enter Madrid appear on a British collection and was sold in an auction to Robert Burton and give that to Elizabeth Taylor, and was recovered by the Spanish crown on Elizabeth Taylor auction when she died. Incredible story of a great pearl.
You see Maria with the 3 boys on Raphael‘s painting called Madonna Terranuova
Does anyone else see the suggestion of the cross formed by the darker wall sections behind the three figures? Not sure if that would have been intentional as foreshadowing or just me…
I had always interpreted this as Jesus giving the flower to St John.
Brilliant. Could the handing of the carnation be the other way round, Jesus giving it to John?
Could this Madonna & Child have Raphael depicting in the background that the windows and wall actually suggest the cross? Sort of a prefiguring and reflection that theology of the cross...
Is the frame original?
My personal opinion: all museum walls should be medium grey (what photographers call 18% grey). This is neutral both in colour and in light, and doesn't interfere with the appreciation of the painting. A red wall introduces a "background noise" in the perception of the viewer.

This be very well maybe the reason why I think the lady is Elizabeth and not Mary?
Splainittometeech? What the difference between a picture and a painting?
The Madonna is so pretty.
better angles of our nature
Wise beyond years these three are. The halos representing a fully awakened consciousness. Chakras are open and aligned igniting the crown chakra indicating cosmic expansion or "Christ Consciousness" = "Oneness" = "Unity Consciousness".
Matthias gets more compliments than Raphael himself. Ok anyway.. 😊
Raphael: “what the hell is this guy saying? Somebody offered me money to paint a picture of Mary, John, & Jesus. So I did. Nothing more, nothing less.”

But it would have been what Raphael would have taken as a fact.
b. An instance of being in love:
I believe that the painting was small because Raphael used Indigo blue for his Virgins.
Raphael's most stunning and original work also belongs to the National Gallery - his portrait of Pope Julius II. It makes all of his religious-themed paintings appear insipid and dated, and reminds us all that the Roman Catholic Church, then and now, is a political organization, not a religious one.

2:04 NOPE: it's not secret that during the Napoleon invasion of italy most of the pieces of art were first stolen by the french troups and then SOLD. Unfortunately many others were simply destroied, or lost along their way to france.

I love all your videos! Thank you! But how about less time on the speakers, & more time on the art! Show the art! Please! Every detail, every corner, let speakers talk, & let us see the art!
Calm serene beautiful painting presented by a nervous over zealous curator. And this is a problem when it comes to presenting art, how to explain and it's relevance without overshadowing the painting itself.
