Hello New Reel. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands

This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him.

@@roborange159 That's the thing about a well-written song. Yes those are the events that inspired this song. But Tuomas was skillful enough to create layers within this masterpiece that many of us can relate to and feel emotionally involved.

This song was based around the Edgar Allen Poe short horror story, "The Pit and the Pendulum". Both of you are very deep level thinkers when it comes to understanding the poetic and metaphoric meanings to this song. Great job without knowing the full back story. Yes, Too-ohmas is the main song writer and the focus of these lyrics. Tuomas does relate to many of the different aspects that can be metaphorically represented by water in all of its different forms. The blade also represents the sharp tongues and criticism from the press and all of the fans who loved and revered Tarja as the Nightwish front woman. IMHO, I feel that Tuomas actually had to kill off and bury a small piece of his soul to be able to move forward with his dream. A new version of Nightwish. Mother & Father were some actual words of comfort and advice for Tuomas as he was attempting to deal with all of the fallout and his emotional turmoil. "The End" of the first version of Nightwish,. Which opened the way for "The Beginning" of the new Nightwish! Sorry if I said too much. Simply put, "A Masterpiece" of musical artistic composition.

For people who don't know the story behind this song I can tell you did one of the best analyses I've seen (heard) till now. You got fundamentally what about it is. Some details if you are interested of... " In the year of our Lord 2005" the band parted ways with their first singer Tarja because of some personal disagreements with an open letter (you can find it in the net) published to the fans explaining the reason behind this action. Because of her voice and operatic way of singing Tarja had become iconic for the fandom setting how Nightwish sound like. Although it was done with unanimous decision of all members Tuomas being the leader of the band took the entire backlash from the fans, the media, friends and even had a phone call with the Finnish prime minister back then.. As a sensitive person that led him to a depression and even some suicidal thoughts. He felt betrayed and felt all he did till then being lost(1000 pages of erased text). That psychological turmoil he associated with the Poe's " Pit and the pendullum" story like descending sharpened pendullum above your head and brought these suicidal thoughts. Instead of doing it in real life he wrote the song being his metaphorical death to remove the load and start a new beginning. The last part "Mother and Father" contains actual words by his parents who together with one of his friends(as far as I know) helped him get over it\. That is the short story and this song is probably their most emotional masterpiece..

Great reaction. - I love how at the end Emppu and Marko move close to Tuomas as if to support him and how Floor looks at him tenderly for a long time after the song has finished. Ps. Tuo-mas -> "Tuo" is pronounced like the English word: duo, but with "t" instead of "d" and "mas" is basically pronounced like the end of the name Thomas.

Awesome reaction you two. I like that you hadn't researched it first. For Nightwish fans , this song is the most meaningful... I have seen plenty reactors fail to do this song justice, but you guys (first time reaction wise) did Great, Solid A . This songs backstory is deep and dark , especially for Tuomas (suicide by song). So dig deep (both letters and some interviews) ! And yet, Floor took this song to a new astral level (originally sung by Anette). Also I recommend to read "The Pit and The Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe for extra flavor... The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja ( First singer of Nightwish )itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired. In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die. These are the things that brought him into depression and these are the things that echo through the lyrics. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Tuomas but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. There is no shame in needing help to save yourself from a darkness like that, medication, friends or otherwise. On of the most horrible thoughts I could have for someone in that kind of depression is not doing anything to try to get out of it, or not having the will to even try. One of the great poisons in this world is having to hamster wheel ourselves to death. We have to pay for things we already own (taxes) we have to pay for things we shouldn’t have to pay for ( water, warmth) I don’t even think we should have to pay for most foods minus having someone prepare them for us like going to a restaurant or a diner that I understand but the societies we as humans are conditioned by and the governments that control the aspects of those societies will always make it to where we feel like we have to work our lives away doing things that snuff out creativity, kill our ambition, destroy our dreams and I could keep going and going with things that we do to ourselves with the objective to just survive or keep our family from falling into the red. So there is nothing but praise to you from us for being able to get yourself through such a dark time in your life however you had to do it. We are so appreciative of your support and thank you so much for commenting we had to take the summer off from the channel due to unforeseen issues that came up within the family, so we are sorry it took us so long to respond. Thanks again and music is healing in so many ways. It brings people together in times when we can be so far apart. This one is truly amazing and awe inspiring. Much love to you.

@Osama depression doesn’t define you it controls you and dictates thoughts that wouldn’t normally be yours. There is no shame in feeling that way. I don’t want to come off as I am preaching to you because I am not I am coming to you as a person that accepts you. I can’t say I understand how you feel because That wouldn’t help you anyway what I can say is that life is a struggle and sometimes unfair and dark and not at all like what we thought it was going to be. But the beautiful thing about life is that we can allow ourselves second third chances if we can learn from the lessons life gives us, no matter how hard they are or how long it takes. Just know that there is a place for all of us in the world and we sincerely hope you get to experience the amazing parts of life as well. We can definitely relate, the best advice we can give out of experience is if the people in your life are conditional with love as well as all of the things you wrote you are most likely dealing with narcissistic people and the only way we have found to rod ourselves of that vicious cycle is by cutting them out of our lives. As hard as it can be and trust me we understand that can be hard. We have had to cut family members out friends etc and it isn’t easy and most of the time we as humans, especially the emotional empathetic non narcissistic kind, end up letting them back in over and over and it always ends up the same in the end even if it is a different rout getting there. The best way to heal yourself is to love yourself. When we were at our lowest we had to revert back to square 1 - ourselves and be self serving until we liked the people we were then it was easier to cut those people out because we knew our worth and knew what we deserved in every relationship. Make your circle small and your focus you. If you even need anyone to talk to we are just a message away. Our email is in our description and there is no judgement here. Much Love!

GREAT reaction guys! It's hard for me to not put the meaning and expound on it in here for yall lol! I'll try to catch the live stream on Wednesday to pitch in lol! I was sorry I missed the last one. Personally, I think its great to go into this song blind. There are benefits to researching it, but just as many benefits to go into it blind. I'm fine with either, and you guys did amazing. I'm an empath too, and understood this song as you did before I even knew there was a backstory to it. Kudos you two! Tuomas takes a lot of inspiration from literature/poetry, mythology, fantasy, real life experiences/emotions, and yes, the ocean. He often tackles deeper topics with his music. Weak fantasy is a great example - he takes some great stabs at organized religion and the church and all that's been done in its name in that one. I felt you guys on that reaction. I was raised in the church too. Here in The South, it's different from what I've seen in other parts of the country. I questioned things as a young girl, and I was told it was borderline blasphemy. I was 6. I just wanted to understand. Those experiences helped to shape my thoughts on G-d and religion as an adult - which isn't what your run of the mill "Southern Christian" thinks. It's always refreshing to hear others relay some of the very same things I've come to know and believe in that area. Always enjoy listening to you guys. You two remind me a lot of me and my husband. He's my twin flame, and I would be broken without him and our kids. It's just very nice to see another couple that seems to have what me and my hubby have. Yes, The Greatest Show On Earth is amazing too! It's also a journey, but not like this one. TGSOE is more a celebration of life and creation, and how it's evolved. Please try to do the version that is live from Tampere 2015. That one has some extras in it that are amazing. The Wembley version is amazing too (of course), but IMHO, I think the Tampere version is better suited for reactions, and the vocals have a little better volume, easier to follow. You can do one with lyrics if you like, they are important in understanding the song. It's totally up to you guys! As a side note, The Poet and the Pendulum (TPATP) is a song in a series of 3 dealing with the situation surrounding the reason for the creation of this song. This performance was from their amazing Wembley show. Bye Bye Beautiful (you'll need to do the official music video for this one, not a live version - Anette is wonderful as their singer, but she isnt great live, and they do not perform this with Floor - I'll explain why on Wednesdays live) and then Master Passion Greed. There is no live version of Master Padsion Greed as Tuomas has said those emotions are gone from him and it will never be played live for that reason. That one has only Marko on vocals. I will wait until Wesnesday's live to go into what they are about. Hopefully, I won't miss it! I'm a mod for another channel here on YT and he goes live on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 central time. So I'm REALLY hoping I can make it!!! All 3 of these songs are on their album titled Dark Passion Play. Anette was their lead on vocals for this album and for the Imaginarium album. She departed during the middle of the US leg of their tour for Imaginarium, and that's when Floor swooped in, saved the day, and brought Nightwish back to life. She had only 48 hours to learn that set list and she slayed it! There is a documentary titled Please Learn the Setlist in 48 hours here on YT that you guys can watch if you like! The Wacken 2013 show you've seen so much from was her first show for the European fans and she'd been in the band for about 8-10 months at that time. She and Troy were asked to be permanent members of the band after that show. There are so many amazing songs left for you guys to dive into! I can honestly say they don't have a horrible song. Of course, some I like less than others, but all of their music is well done! Hope you guys have had a wonderful day! Love. Light, and Blessings from me and my family to you and yours! Greetings from Alabama! Hope to catch yall Wednesday! G-d Bless yall!

This was the best reaction I've ever seen from you guys - just as this song shows so much of Tuomas, you guys showed us another level of what you guys are all about. Even though you don't know the back story you pretty much nailed the emotional roller coaster that it represents. I have a feeling that most Nightwish fans are empaths like yourselves and Nightwish because you only really appreciate the full brilliance of their music if you feel it rather than just hearing it - it's not really about a catchy riff or a great guitar solo or drum pattern (although they have plenty of these), it's about emotion. As Tuomas said, Nightwish is the scenery of his soul, and if you don't feel that you won't get Nightwish 🤘

I love the Poet and the Pendulum. It shows the insane quality level of all members of Nightwish. And what I really, really love is, well.... it is hard to explain. Hope it makes sense when I say that I don't believe Nightwish want to 'tell a story' in this song, I think they want to 'tell us something'. They provoke an emotion and challenge us to digest our own emotions and make our own story with those fundamental, raw, and tough emotional ingredients. I believe they (the band members) understand that profound concept and execute it with a rare high quality on all levels. When Nightwish performs this song, to me Nightwish it's not a group of awesome professional musicians making music together but more like one organism connected by their own willingness to open up and share their energy with each other and deliver something that activates your brain, makes your heart bounce and touches your soul.

"The White Lands of Empahtica" is a Dark Tower (Stephen King) reference. It's a frozen land where the residents can feel and share the emotions of others. Tuomas often talks about his connection to the Ocean, referring to himself in an earlier song as an “Ocean Soul.” The Pacific continues this theme, and the music matches the ocean's name, meaning “Peaceful.” #lotd "The Ever Free” refers to a Victorian Era poem by Barry Cornwall, “The Sea.” Reading that poem helps a lot when trying to understand Thomas’ connection to the ocean. Tuomas says the last section, "Mother and Father" is almost a direct quote from his mother, the 'death" was metaphorical, this was his mom pulling him out of that depression.

The story that Tuomas is telling is the hell he went thru with Nightwishes 1st Singer Tarja and how he had to basically let her go (fire her). Tuomas the musical writer/genius behind Nightwish and wrote and open letter explainging why he let Tarja go. Tarja several days later wrote a open letter to. You should read both open letters to understand this song Poet and the Pendulum. Tuamos is the one that uses this song to die, because he did not want to fire Tarja, but because of the turmoil she was causing, he had to fire her!

I really appreciate the level you paid attention to the lyrics without knowing the deeper meaning behind those. One interesting point you missed was the 'story teller' saying Tuomas had only 3 minutes and counting, and exactly 3 minutes later the blade fell and Tuomas died (showing symbolic decapitation with his hand). A minor detail, but really cool thing in the song's composition.

Not bad, you're both very intuitive. Glad you will be learning the deeper meaning behind this epic song, which is a touchstone in the pathos of Nightwish, and of Tuomas (pron: TOO-oh-Moss) Holopainen. He killed himself in this song, so he didn't go thru with it in real life. The band only played this a dozen or so times live, and Tuomas actually turns the vocal feed to his in-ear monitors off during this song. The wound remains, more than a decade later. I feel you, fellow empaths! I'm surrounded by idiots and instability...its very hard to stay grounded bc I take in all of that chaos. I use music to cleanse myself and shake off all the bad juju. And I burn alot of sage!

This was an exceptional reaction/analysis, especially considering that you went in blind! Good job, you picked up on a lot of things! I don't know if I meet the criteria to be considered HSP/empath, but I do tend to have strong emotions - great passion, but also great pain. The latter unfortunately resulted in many years battling depression and I feel that "The Poet and the Pendulum" captures the inner turmoil of depression remarkably well! It's one of my favourite songs/compositions of all time, but it hits me rather close to home, so I don't listen to/watch it as often as I otherwise would.
