hello hi, as a fellow Singaporean I took my fair share of MRT to everywhere I want, and since I'm a train fan, I decided to make a video of me ranking the sounds each train makes.
do let me know if you guys agree or disagree with my list, and feel free to come up with your own in the comments! :D
all the clips in this video do not belong to me, I do not own any of the clips taken in this video. All clips used belong to their respective owners.

I lived in Singapore from 1999 to 2010 and the C751B was always favorite train, mainly because of its different motor sound and how rare it was compared to the C151 and C651 which I rode on mostly at the time. Riding a C751B was like a special treat for me.

12:20 Please note the 1996 London stock has GTO Alstom, while the C751A has OniX IGBT. The GTO requires more switching frequency changes because they cannot go very high in frequency, hence the number of additional "steps". It is true that the sound is very close, and it is strange because the OniX has existed for several years already, and the sound is different (our Z20900s date from 2001 for the first ones).

I actually like the deep motors of the first one , reminds me of the mark 3s down in the uk. Alot of modern traction systems are made purposely to sound shit because the makers don't actually focus on that ...sadly. esspecially alstom, they give you a hint of the original 90s programming, but then change into something different.

@皇家海星 HMS Neptune yeah that's the annoying part, why make them that quiet when they sound so good. I'm not saying to deliberately make them annoying to passenger, but at least as a creative element keep them programmed to sound nice!!, idk why the owners or programmers don't consider that. long as they don't breach sound specifications then why not let it be? Idk too much perfectionism . I'm sure alot of passengers, who arent rail fans, actually appreciate it, not so much that they care, but that it sounds nice when they hear it. Their too good not to like! That being said, alot of modern trains still have audiable traction. So clearly their allowed to sound like that even till this day. Again not as budren but to keep the sound within a "golden" range or threshold for audiablity. This sort of mirrors the same reason people like cars that make sound , it's a human thing or quirk. Why not let it remain on the trains without burden . I do think it's possible to request that as a rail operating company , but likely doesent get thought about (again evidenced by the fact that some units are programmed to deliberately sound organised and nice to the ears) Uk trains are undergoing a really boring modern phase if you ask me. Aventra stock train sounds awful, they make literally no noise , our desiro city fleet make noise but is so under the radar, its boring. Only a select few desiro cities are interesting e.g. our class 707s. Our stadler flirts are among the only modern fleet that make nice motor sounds. And the 331s and lastly the class 385s. Other than that , our older uk fleet are so lovely to listen to. Our electrostars are also a really nice train to listen to!

The Fuji IGBT used in some of these trains are actually very rare in Japan, since it's only used in one specific train type. That being said, it's cool to see that they're fairly common in Singapore. They sound similar to a lot of other IGBTs in Japan, so I was surprised to find out it's made by Fuji after riding on one of those a few years ago. The other motors mentioned here are all very nice. As a Japanese, the motors not from Japan all sound very interesting. I lived near Dhoby Ghaut, so I often heard the Alstom motors on the C751A, and I absolutely loved them. They sound a bit like GTO motors. The C151's chopper motors were also very cool to hear, since you can't hear these anymore in Tokyo. Also I love how a lot of people here don't like the new PMSM motors, it's a similar situation here in Japan. The newer motors, with the exception of some, are all very quiet and boring. They can be very eco friendly and energy saving, but man it's sad that there aren't that many loud, cool sounding ones being manufactured any more.

the c651 was meant to be refurbished, but those refurbished prototypes were scrapped due to teething problems, high cost and also given the fact that it was pointless to refurbish them when they were already plans to withdraw them from service in the next 5 or so years. So thats why they cancelled the program. Scrapping the refurbished sets were a waste of money though. They could have converted them into geometry track cars or reused them for emergency drills, but what has happened just happens.

I agree with him, the C651 has the best motor. Sounds similar to my favourite childhood train, the Seimines Nexas in Melbourne.

@@Detrabot I lived on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines and I got a little sick of the xTraps, so I would be excited to go to the former M>Train area and pray for a Nexas. And damn I really liked it and I didn’t know why, but later on in Singapore I figured it was the motor.

11:14, not sure what you meant here. The C151s were the OG trains in Singapore since 1987, and their unique motor sounds (similar to the Siemens 651 ones) had been ubiquitous to Singaporean ears way before the third-gen C751b trains arrived.
