I love these shows. I have a routine. You guys on my TV. Using my Spotify account I pause the show along the way and listen to samples of your recommendations. I end up with a couple hours of great entertainment and find some great new music. By the way, this band is right down my alley, especially the more Proggy stuff. I am older than both of you guys(not put together) but am in that time in life where I’m not listening to dance music. Head phones, darkened room and contemplation. I can’t find anything here so far that I don’t love. Can’t believe I have never heard their music. So glad I listened to tonight’s show. Now I’ve got a lot of homework to do. Thanks guys. You two together are as good as it gets as far as I am concerned.✌️

Steven's enthusiasm is always contagious but when combined with Pete's shared enthusiasm for the bank, had to seek some out. A great listen so now time to track down some albums. Thanks, gents, for all the homework done to present a discussion of these seven albums to those watching. Was so excited for this! This band is one of my favorite modern rock bands. Completely agree that they do not have a clunker at all and most of their albums imo range from decent to amazing. They are also a band that have evolved quite a bit and one keeps noticing how the production gets better with each album. The band is incredibly unique as well and I dunno bands that sound like them. A new listener can maybe hear some elements of early porcupine tree and pink Floyd but there is quite a lot of slavic folk influence. The albums overall though introspective are extremely easy on the ear. I actually like them more than porcupine tree since I find them more consistent and a bit more well rounded. The musicianship is fantastic (duda is a fucking genius. Terrific vocalist and bass player) but it's more about the song writing and what each musician brings to the table (like a balanced soup with noone overpowering). Have followed them since a long time and it's always exciting anticipating their next release. R.i.p Piotr Also, duda is so prolific he releases like one album every year either with riverside, his solo stuff or with the lunatic soul moniker. You guys should check lunatic soul if you haven't. Very different from this and a mix of folk with electronic music. The last abum was one of my favorites from last year. As for my ranking 1. Anno domini high definition 2. Second life syndrome 3. Love, fear and the time machine 4. Out of myself 5. Wasteland 6. Rapid eye movement 7. Shrine of new generation slaves

I immediately checked out Anno Domini High Definition after hearing what Pete and Steven had to say about it - and my, oh my, how my old lug'oles are thanking me for that. What a stellar album. It had a similar impact on me to Opeth's Sorceress, and in a very good way indeed. A proper Riverside voyage of discovery awaits.

Lament might be my favourite Riverside song) 3. Second Life Syndrome (The best of the trilogy. 5/5 album) 4. Rapid Eye Movement (first Album I listened to. I discovered them together with Porcupine Tree. Still a great album.) 5. Anno Domini High Definition (transition album between the trilogy and the newer stuff. Still 4.5/5) 6. Out of Myself (strong Debut) 7. Shrine of new generation slaves (ok, but not on the same level as the rest) 8. Eye of the Soundscape (different, but good. More ambient sounding. Along with Dream Theater & Porcupine Tree my three favourite bands of the last 25 years. And as you guys say there’s no turkeys amongst Riverside’s catalogue. Can’t really argue with Anno Domini, Second Life Syndrome & Shrine..as your top 3. Favourite track is Deprived (Irretrievably Lost Imagination) but love Egoist Hedonist & the title track off Second Life Syndrome. Also a word about Living In The Past off the Memories In My Head EP. The last couple of minutes or so is Prog Rock at it’s best. Roll on April when I see them.

Loved this ranking episode! I discovered Riverside at the same time as Opeth and Pain Of Salvation, in summer 2006. Had already been listening to Porcupine Tree for a year at that point. To me all four bands kind of belong in the same basket, they were a big part of my music listening life between 2006-2010. It was only last year that I heard Riverside's last album and I really liked it, still haven't heard the albums between Wasteland and Rapid Eye Movement... but from the albums I am familiar with, Second Life Syndrome is clearly my favorite, it's an almost perfect record and the one I always went back to even in recent years. Saw Riverside live in 2007 here in Helsinki on their REM tour and it was an amazing show! I'll need to hear the rest of their catalog, as well, finally...!

I went kinda backwards with this. I had heard New Generation Slaves but had trouble disengaging it from the Porcupine Tree sound, like I felt they were trying to be Porcupine Tree. Only last year I happened upon Lunatic Soul and loved that (incomplete) song cycle. So went back to Riverside and I completely agree and this is one of the most positive ranking video I have seen recently, both of you in great spirits with the enthusiasm, care and compassion for this band. I think Mariusz Duda is using music as a process to understand himself and the world in which he inhabits which is what a true artist does, you find this core of unravelling in a lot of music. I think the words 'body of work' as stated is the way Riverside should be appreciated. Thank you.

So brave to rank. As you say all albums are brilliant. ADHD and SONGS get my most air play. Saw them on wasteland tour and they were so so rock solid and tight. The whole of lunatic souls is fantastic too. There is definitely more to come from these guys.

Thanks for this and the Frost* rankings. Already placed orders for your No1s after checking out a few tracks, hopefully will lead to more. Nothing wrong with "melancholic" music - Joy Division and early Cure were my teenage bands - it can have a beauty that lifts you in a strange sort of way.

I couldn't find some of their cds on Amazon. They do have vinyl, but that's expensive. I will listen on Spotify. Hope that Inside Out does a box set for these guys soon. They've done some for Flower Kings, Enchant, and *Frost. Thanks for the video, Pete and Steven.

If you can't find CDs on Amazon, definitely try Discogs or eBay. You can find stuff at a decent price, you just have to research a little more. Bands like this, I also like to trawl second hand record stores and the CD sections for finds and bargains. It takes a while to find stuff but its part of the fun. I can wait for reissues in the meantime.

@@JIF882 I still see most of their CDs available on the Inside Out Store (EU). I am not sure where you are based and how much shipping will cost for you. If you are in the US might be difficult but the EU store has them. Go to insideoutshop dot de (I can't post the URL on youtube but hopefully you can figure it out) and search Riverside, I see they have most of their studio albums in stock still and on CD. I hope that helps.

Riverside are my third favourite band of all time behind Rush and Fish’s Marillion. Live they are atmospheric and sublime, they weave together an hypnotic concoction of wonderful music in a style they can call their own. The guys are right; all the albums brilliant but the best two stand out, and both the presenters agree with me, or is it I agree with them.

Of all musicians currently writing and recording new music, Mariusz Duda is in the top 5. He is incredibly talented and diverse. He can write a metal song and a tearjerker and make you believe in them equally.

My prog buddy and lifelong friend Mike is a prog-or-nothing fiend, whereas I have broader tastes. He has loads of "nu" prog, a lot of which I find rather underwhelming, formulaic and too AOR leaning, preferring the classic era. One time I was staying with him he played me the live videos of SLS and Wasteland on YT and I was blown away. I got SLS and played it to absolute death, hoovering up all the other studio albums at the time, an EP, the ambient compilation, a live album and one of the Lunatic Soul albums. So I've got a lot to catch up on, decided to go in chronological order on the remaining full studio albums first, so just started in on Out of Myself, surprised and pleased to end up with a Laser's Edge copy given the SOT connection, from an independent store.

Being that their notable releases are 2016, 2018 and 2021, it's also exciting to have some younger blood to discuss. Thoughts?
