Ranking the Motörhead Discography

A ranking is always a good excuse to go through all the songs again. A Top 22 ranking of all Motörhead studio albums and some nice tidbits and rarities. Feel free to comment.

No sleep till Hammersmith. For lots of British bands, including Motorhead, their live tours ended with Hammersmith. And since uk music was London centred, there was an element of coming home. So No Sleep Till Hammersmith is not about recording there, it's about ending up there.

For NSTH, the show in Leeds and 2 nights at Newcastle City Hall at the end of March 81 were recorded (the Short Sharp Pain in the Neck tour). I saw both nights in Newcastle. Most of the original album is from the second night. BTW, when they came back on the Iron Fist in '82, the Bomber lighting rig was gone; replaced by a descending stage. And, when they toured Another Perfect Day in '83, the shows were on a much smaller scale - Lemmy had moved from stage right to stage left (probably another of Robbo's demands), where he remained. I think I only saw them once more after that, the No Remorse tour, by which time they were back playing clubs.

Great stuff buddy. Good to see a Motorhead ranking video with some sensible, informed opinions. It seems to be fashionable amongst youtubers to overhype the Bronze era records whilst shitting on everything else. I guess these people are hipsters or something? Anyway, I would argue that the last run of albums they did, with Cameron Webb(?), was their most consistent. I didn't like Motorizer when it first dropped, but really enjoyed it after a few years had passed. I also agree that The World is Yours is VERY underrated, generally. I got into the band around the time they did Inferno, so of course I have a natural bias for their later output, but I really enjoy and appreciate all their different eras and sound variations. The only band I can say that about, more or less.

A very unpopular opinion: My favorite Motorhead albums are the last 5 or 6 albums. More Metal/less punk (Sacrifice, Kiss of Death, Overnight...), that's how I like the band's sound.

I agree on "Sacrifice". Never could warm up to it. I do like "Snakebite Love" quite a bit, though. In fact it was the Album that made me a fan. Before that I knew a couple of songs from Samplers and couldn't warm up to them. That has changed for many of those songs.

I understand. The album that gets you into a band always will be special. In my case with Maiden that was Somewhere in Time, an album that gets recognition now, but was very criticised at the time. Can't help but love it.

@@jandecuyper4477 Yeah, I read some of the criticism back in the day. I'm fine with it. I'm generally fine with other people's tastes. Maiden is a difficult topic for me. I considered myself a fan for the longest time but with the release of "Senjutsu" I realized that I basically don't really like most of their stuff & it was all based on the 2-CD "Best of the Beast" and the few Albums I do like. However, on re-listening "Somewhere in Time" that time I started to really like the Album. So, maybe there's hope for the rest.

I' ll agree with that. Overkill is my fave too. It's never off my turn table for long! I think Lemmy played the second guitar solo on Limb from Limb. Or so I'm lead to believe.

Bastards, Wurzel and Campbell at their best. Mickey Dee drives the album with excellent drum work. Easily Motorhead's best album outside of the original members.

They never made a bad album, Ok Hammered was patchy, and I think they recorded the parts seperately which means no "Vibe" But the later stuff is much underrated by critics. It is Motorhead after all

I don’t mind this ranking. It’s not that different to mine. Kiss Of Death is probably my least favourite and Sacrifice is only slightly better, did you know Sacrifice was Lemmys favourite Motörhead album? That’s weird I think. I like where you put Rock n Roll, it’s underrated. Bastards is good too but I wouldn’t have it as high as you. I would have had We Are Motörhead higher, I think it’s also underrated and better than most of the albums which came after it. Iron Fist i would have higher too, definitely in front of Orgasmatron. That album is a little overrated for me. My favourite 3 are Bomber, Ace Of Spades and 1916. Just my opinion. Good video.

Nice! And I get what you mean by rating We Are Motörhead higher. And 1916 in your top 3 I can totally dig. I didn't know Sacrifice was Lemmy's favourite, no. If it was in the book, I must have not registered that. So a re-read is in order. Boom. Thanks for your comment!

@@jandecuyper4477 No problem. By coincidence I’m actually going through the whole discography again at the moment. Enjoying it very much. Another one I didn’t mention which I don’t like that much either is Motörizer, that’s probably my third least favourite. None of these albums would I actually call bad though.

Hammered was my first album from them, and it wasn't their strongest, but I don't think it's their worst! However, how are you not mentioning Don't let dadfy kiss me off Bastards? It's their strongest song, and definitely if you have a list of saints in your belief or disbelief, that song, and performance should qualify Lemmy!
