    Looking at the parent company can usually answer this, for example both brands you listed are owned by SC Johnson. The ingredients may be better but most of the “eco friendly” brands you see on chain retailer shelves are not actually sustainable due to their parent companies. If you have the money to spend on eco friendly brands do not spend it on brands like that.

    Personally I would prefer companies that market themselves more solidly as an eco-friendly option! I've seen quite a few on Instagram where they sell plastic-free refills. Probably the most eco-friendly option would be homemade cleaners, though, since you can still get a very effective clean with really basic ingredients like vinegar.

    It's honestly a shame that Unilever has dominated so much of the market. Seventh Gen and Ben & Jerry's used to be small Vermont based companies. They are still based here and many of their ethical processes have remained steadfast or even expanded, but now the allure is a profit motive for their less than ethical corporate overlords. I work at a similarly structured company and it is a struggle, but most companies can't remain independent forever if they are growing to the point of national or global outreach. It's a catch-22 in corporate capitalist America.

  • @TinyFitnessHouston

    @TinyFitnessHouston

    3 жыл бұрын

    Came here to say something like this! I don’t think her review of 7th gen was very accurate...there were lots of independent green brands that were purchased by conglomerates in the mid 00’s when it turned out that the environment wasn’t just a trend, and the large companies provided distribution and better $ structuring so the companies wouldn’t go out of business and could land corporate deals which might not sound cool on KZread but has to be true to be sustainable. Some companies retained lots of control over their product, while others (Annie’s, for example) merged more with their new parent. Not everyone is going to hunt online for sustainable companies that might maybe make products that work before they go out of business. I wish she understood more about corporate trees if she’s going to do vids like this 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

    @@TinyFitnessHouston Very helpful insight, glad to have this conversation out there! To Shelb's credit they're certainly not god tier but I can get many of their products nearly plastic or package free and their company is headquartered down the block from mine and I can attest they're the same good people on a mission just like myself. Unilever just skims off the top and should by no means blow the wind out of their "sales".

There's only a couple of brands that I know of that sell men's clothes, rarely find any for children and the girl's clothes are almost always hyper feminine or basic as fuck. It's incredibly hard to shop for my family and so we generally just wear thrifted clothes until I can't patch them up anymore. As someone who was raised on organic foods (I’m 29 for context so like I’m old) I’ve been aware of and looking into sustainable/organic/environmentally friendly practices for years. organic cotton isn’t actually more sustainable. It’s sort of a catch 22, because on the one hand pesticides are bad for rivers, wildlife, and humans when they get into the water supply, but organic crops in general take up more land and the yields are lower so it’s not more sustainable in terms or land usage and deforestation, but it is more sustainable in terms of pesticide and inorganic phosphate fertilizer use.

    When I started to reduce waste I used Seventh Generation because I didn't know better ad thats what we had access to. Then I started watching your videos, switched to my own homemade all purpose cleaner, bidet, fillaree, dropps, and just dropped Seventh all together. A brand I would like to know more about is United By Blue and Humankind (I know you had a video with their toothpaste tabs so I'm definitely curious as to what you think about them as a whole).

    Hi Shelbi! Thank you so much for spotlighting us in your video! As soon as you kick stared the segment with 'a great brand', it gave me such warm fuzzies. But hold the phone - to make it to God Tier, what an honour! It's so greatly appreciated that our efforts towards sustainability are recognised - not only by you but also by our lovely customers who I see lurking in your comments section! Sustainability is our jam and we do not take it lightly. To us, sustainability is far more than being plastic-free, it’s about what’s inside the bars and who is part of the whole process, from harvesting of the ingredients (as you touched based on), to staff selling the products (we are certified living wage employers). Social and economic sustainability is just as important as environmental. 💚 While our website is jam-packed with a lot of information, if you or anyone who sees this comment thinks we are missing some information, do let us know! We are open to complete transparency and want to ensure that anything a consumer would want to know is readily available on our website 😊. Lastly, this video overall is in God Tier on its own! Loaded with heaps of information, I'm off now to look up some of the brands mentioned in your video 😊. ~ Jen

    Seeing that she was going to talk about Ethique is why I watched this video! I’ve tried so many shampoo bars, and Ethique’s were the ones that really worked for my hair! After trying them (love that your have sampler packs), I never tried anything else. In fact, I also got my husband to use them, and once we had kids, we used them for them too! Highly, highly recommend. I was so happy that she ranked them so highly!!

They are 100% fossil fuel free. They also have some mutual funds to choose from but aren’t the best on the market. You’d be better off with a Vanguard account with socially conscious stocks. Their customer service is great tho! If you need a debit card, I’d recommend but not great for much else. They have a card you can pay for to carbon offset but you can get different cards with WAY better rewards. Hope that helps!!🙌

    To me the quality of the clothing goes hand in hand with how sustainable it is because it reduces the need to continue re-buying the same thing. I bought underwear from pact that were literally unraveling before I even tried them. All of my everlane shirts got saggy necks after maybe 2 years, the only other shirt in my wardrobe like that was 10 years old. (Although I do wear my everlane coat daily in the winter) I just ordered from Kotn because they seem to be high quality. They don't use organic cotton but they're a B corp and all of the manufacturing steps are done locally and ethically in Egypt. I buy most of my clothes secondhand so I'm not against buying a few basics that aren't totally perfect. Shelbi covered a lot but there are a TON of "sustainable" brands nowadays and choosing who to buy from can be exhausting when you're just trying to clothe yourself lol. Also about Patagonia Shelbi kinda mentioned the selling back side but they have a separate website where you can buy used/refurbished patagonia items.
