Ranking My Hyper Coasters (B&M Excluded) - The 200 Foot Club

After I made my video ranking the North American B&M hyper coasters, people were asking for my ranking of non-B&M hypers. I decided to include any coaster that crossed the 200 foot mark, even if they aren't a TRUE hyper coaster because...why not?

Old guy here. There was ABSOLUTELY hype for Desperado back in 1994. USA Today had a cover story and the Travel Channel had a dedicated special with the ride designers/engineers and the owner of the casino. National morning shows did live remotes, as well. Throughout the 90’s, there were billboards for it in the Vegas area advertising “thrills better than The Strip.” Sad that it has become a rarely-open, painful, low-level coaster. It was the pinnacle back in the mid-90’s and the first coaster I ever traveled cross-country for. Marathoned it with an “unlimited rides” wristband.

"It opened in 1994. I don't know if there was coaster hype back then." Yeah, there was big coaster hype. I was only 9 years old, but I vividly remember the coaster wars of the 1990s. Everyone was trying to break height and speed records. We went from Raptor to Montu to Alpengeist in B&M invert hype, Mantis to Riddler's Revenge in standup hype, Magnum to Steel Phantom to Desperado and Pepsi Max Big One in hypercoaster hype. It was an exciting time to be a coaster enthusiast. Records were shattering every single year, and there was constant hype for the new biggest & fastest.

@@AirtimeThrills Mostly of the coaster hype in the early 90s was via regional amusement park advertising (local newspapers, TV spots, etc.) But nationwide it happened most prominently via the American Coaster Enthusiasts organization. They publish a quarterly magazine ("Rollercoaster!") and bi-monthly newspaper ("ACE News") which has been in print since the late 1970s. These publications always featured in-depth accounts of new roller coasters under construction, interviews with the park operators and ride designers, whatever accounts of planned specifications they could find, world records being broken, etc. Another way that coaster hype spread was via TV/VHS specials. There was an entire series of VHS tapes, "America's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrills in 3-D" / "World's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrills" which was the first place I was able to see POV videos of roller coasters, and that is where I personally got onboard the coaster hype for Raptor, Kumba, Top Gun, Drachen Fire, Steel Phantom, and other early-90s coasters. (I also first found out about Desperado [and Pepsi Max Big One] via that "World's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrills" video.) There were also numerous cable TV specials about roller coasters. Most prominently, the Discovery Channel aired an annual "Thrills, Chills, and Spills" TV block on Memorial Day starting in 1996, which always featured brand new coasters which were opening, sensationalizing their records. So yeah, even before the internet became widespread, there was an explosion in mass media via magazines, cable TV, VHS, and national organizations. And this is what fueled the coaster wars of the 90s.

Six Flags Over Texas Titan has very comfortable lap bars, intense, and gloss smooth but, the boring layout really does limit the experience. B&Ming Titan would be a nice treat to improve the layout as well as ride capacity with 4 across seating. The clamshells would be an improvement over the already comfortable Giovanola lap bars since they are even more comfortable, and can handle airtime moments much better.

The hill after the first drop on Wild Thing gives fantastic extended floater air. When it was built in 1996 it was the longest sustained airtime hill of any coaster in the world. The rest of the ride is average I'd say, big boring swooping double helix turnaround and then a mid-course brake run that is a bit temperamental, but on a bad day it absolutely murders the bunny hops on the return leg.

Very good list and video bro! The only ride I never understand the high ranking on for most people is Magnum XL. Was it better in the past? I rode late last year and I think it is kind of overrated. It was probably my 5th favorite coaster at Cedar Point and I personally don’t think it comes close to Superman at SFNE

You definitely get some airtime on it. Someone else can correct me if they know a better row, but I got some decently strong floater to weaker ejector on the final hills by sitting in the third row. Definitely try sitting there if you ever reride it.

Great list and great idea! While allot of these coasters aren’t the traditional hyper models, most of these coasters are intense and/or enjoyable! Steel Force has its good days and meh days. Like most coasters, it’s better on a hot day in a busy park. Most of your top 10 here are in my overall top 10. Magnum comes close and I don’t find it painful as others do. I’ll have to give X2 another try after nearly 15 years. I just expected more 4D free spinning coaster and less of a B&M-style wing coaster. I’ll also give Steel Vengeance another try too as I just didn’t get it the 1st time. I didn’t get Millennium Force the 1st time either, but it has grown on me.

Wild Thing is the best of the full-sized ground-up Morgan hypers stateside thanks to that first, very extended airtime hill that lasts for a solid 5 seconds. (Only Superman in Mexico beats it, IMO.) Superman at SFNE was an easy world's best coaster when it was new and with the original T-bars. Legendary. Also I hate to pile on but I will add myself to the voices asking you to please fix the strobe lights at 6:11 or add an epilepsy warning. I don't even have epilepsy but the strobes immediately started triggering a migraine. It is a really intense effect.

I just rode Steel Force a few days ago. The row of hills at the end will give very strong floater airtime if you're in the front car. If the train is full it will possibly be ejector airtime. I couldn't find any airtime like that on Wild Thing or Mamba. I'm getting back on Mamba in a week to confirm this.

DC Rivals would be the top non B&M hyper worldwide imo. Specially when riding backwards. Possibly top overall.🤔 Edit: Typed this before seeing SV was number one as I hadn't thought of it as a hyper. SV would no doubt push DC Rivals down to second.

I've seen POVs of DC Rivals. It looks awesome. If it were here in Canada, it'd probably be considered one of the top 3 coasters nationwide alongside Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland (the first B&M giga) and Coaster at Playland (a modest-looking wooden coaster with violent ejector airtime).

I’ve only ridden one non-B&M Hyper so far: the airtime-less Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It was… well, okay to say the least. I really do wish Giovanola would’ve done more with the layout. Maybe Six Flags could have the breaks trim less so the helix-filled finale can be much better, and perhaps they can replace the trains with new ones from B&M. And give it a new paint job too as I noticed from watching recent POVs that part of the track looks pretty filthy.

Great video! As weird as it sounds, I'd love to see a video of top 10 or so pre-lift/pre-launch sections. Nothing that's a major portion of the ride, like Journey to Atlantis's dark section, but sections like Copperhead Strike's jojo roll or Twisted Colossus's bunny hills. Ranking hypers, B&M or not? Let's see, this is so difficult, there's SO MANY to choose from! 1. Mako Yep, that's all I've rode so far! Unless you count coasters with an elevation change of 200-299 feet the list looks like 1. Lightning Rod 2. Mako 3. Wild Eagle Which is a little better lol

IDEA for a video: Combine ALL hypers on this list (except Manhattan Express) with B&M hyper coasters; all coasters with drops as "little" as Mako and Steel Vengeance (with drops of 200') to Shambala and Hyperion (I know you've never ridden either yet; so in your case, Titan or Goliath at SFMM even though they're kinda crappy.) My case too; I've ridden Goliath at SFMM and it sucks whereas X2 whilst not perfect, is INFINITELY better than Goliath.
