I DE-SPISE love triangles. I was fine with them in Twilight, by Hunger Games I was ready to be done with them, and ever since I cannot stand a love triangle. I have no patience for this sort of drama. Give me almost anything else.

Same! I absolutely hate love triangles! I know they can and have been done well, but most of the time they are lazy and written poorly. Usually only one side of the triangle is given character development so it is obvious who the person they are fighting over will pick. Most tropes I have at least some respect for but I just downright hate love triangles.

the only example of "unready/surprise royal" I could think of was The Princess Diaries lol

For me, I'm a sucker for soulmate tropes, but it really hits the best when they've fallen for each other "on their own" and only later do they realize they're soulmates/fated to be together

The trope I am currently most tired of is “Magic is Illegal”. I feel like it was really common for a while and got boring.

I love how Reagan couldn't really say a bad thing about any of these tropes because she loves fantasy so much. Like yes some of them are basic and less than creative but like, I still like it OKAY?!

Love these tier ranking videos!! My fave tropes are probably: 'magic' school, thief with a heart of gold, crew, un-ready royal (only at the start - surprise royal at the end can gtfo here). Least faves are obv surprise royal, not like other girls, prodigy, insta love.

I totally agree with you about the trope but seeing Aragorn ranked "B" hurts my heart.

I think my favourite 'trope' is a detailed whimsical setting that has all these strange but cool creatures (kinda like Dragon Prince or the Dark Crystal series on netflix - u must watch the dark crystal at some point btw, its the most unique and detailed fantasy tv show ive EVER watched, it almost feels like a fantasy book, plus the villains r LEGENDARY) Least fave trope is probably love at first sight as well, i just cannot relate to someone who decides they love another person after having like 2 conversations 😂

Fantasy school, magic, military, assassin or boarding is an automatic buy for me but not contemporary. I was a high school teacher and that is to close to reality.

Two of my fave things are ALSO opinions and making lists. Heheheh. I was going to use his list and do a tier ranking as well, I'm so excited to watch yours. :D I'm not a huge magical object gal. I like when characters are unwilling or push themselves to make decisions and if a magical object is involved it tends to tip the scales and make the decision more weighted in one direction and for that reason, I'm kinda meh on the magical object shtick. For 'the good king' trope, Traitor's Blade did it really well. Only cos the good king is killed off before the story starts and his subjects (the protagonist) have to try and carry forward his ideals and it's such an awesome concept for his main character Falcio. :D

I think she meant that she hate it when it happens at the end, but for ToG it was revealed at the end of the second book and the series has like 8 books + the main character knew about it all along.

I feel this on many levels

my rankings: Must haves in a book aka S = I don’t need it, but I do enjoy it aka A = magical world, magic school, the prodigy (but instead of being good at everything they’re just fucking intelligent but also sometimes make mistakes cuz they’re still human, or an evil chaotic genius), Won’t make me pick up the book and won’t make me put it down. If it’s in the book, I’ll take it. Aka ok aka B = magical object, plot armour, the good king, the final showdown, dark magical forest, the evil king, epic world, the last battle, the crew, I really don’t need this, most of the time won’t make me put the book down but I still feel like this isn’t that needed aka C = chosen one, illegitimate child, the wise wizard mentor, the dark lord, the unlocked dark force, The second I realise it’s in the boom I am putting it down and never touching it again aka D = surprise royal, unready royal, the quest, thief with a good heart, love triangle, I’m not like other bitches, insta love, country bumpkin

I literally love the magical item trope! I like how it can be consistently used as a tool for the protagonist to skillfully use to it's full potential. I feel like I see this used best in Mangas. I think my absolute favorite of all books that use this is definitely Harry Potter, because of just the variety of all the items and their very specific uses.

I def agree with Nevernight - for Shades of Magic I feel Lila more resents the financial aspect of it? That life is not an option for her so its easier to make fun of it? Just my interpretation

Okay, but one of my favorite tropes is when there are literal monsters but they're more "human" than the actual humans in the society. Like the "we're the true monsters" thing. That just gets me every time.

It's weird because I hate that trope with a passion but I didn't find Lila that annoying. She's more of a "I'm not like any other humans" and just plain chaotic and I loved her. But I can clearly see I'm in the minority most of the time and kinda get why people don't like her!

I just finished Naomi Novik’s A Deadly Education and I loved it!! It was kinda a unique take on a magic school. Also, John Bierce’s Mage Errant is a guilty pleasure of mine, it reads somewhere between middle grade and YA but I absolutely love those books

Not to sound like a suck-up but I really basically agree with pretty much everything. I’d only put the grey-morality-but-ultimately-good-THIEF trope a bit higher up in S tier. 😉

I don’t think Twilight has the “I’m not like other girls” trope?? Bella’s an average character for sure, but I don’t think she belongs in that trope. She does not identify herself as special in any way, nor does she has an interest she thinks are apart from the mainstream and she doesn’t hate on other women as far as I know...
