It has to be 2023. I mean look at that beautiful lineup. Not only there is a ton of variety, so many of these are so so high quality. Second would be 2017, for sure.

2017 has, not just one, but three games which are widely regarded as the best on the console AND the best in their respective franchises. 2023 is great, but mainly because of TOTK, which is a sequel to the game a came out in 2017.

I'm pretty close to Kit on this one ranking-wise. Also 2022 was massive and I'd rank it 2nd best to 2017, arguably the best & freshest Kirby and Pokemon games to date and Xenoblade 3 was stellar. 2020 was hard carried by Xenoblade 1 Definitive Edition & Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, couldn't care less about Animal Crossing.

2017: Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 are some of the best games I have ever played in my life. Mario Odyssey would have won game of the year in any other year but Botw was so amazing that it never stood a chance. Xenoblade 2 is my most played Switch game to date. The characters are so endearing it’s hard not to fall in love with them and the story is rich and the combat deep and immersive. Once you get past the anime thing and look at the game for what it is, you quickly realize that Xenoblade is the most underrated franchise in Nintendo’s arsenal.

Based off of what I played: 2023: Zelda TotK, Pikmin 4 and Mario Wonder are top class. Great Ports/Remakes and nice surprises with F-Zero and WarioWare. Still need to check out FE Engage. 2017: The year almost seems overrated but it's hard to ignore BotW and Odyssey which are huge standouts, haven't gotten into Xenoblade. Arms and Splatoon 2 are good. Mario Kart is of course great but is a port. 2019: Three houses, Mario Maker 2, Link's Awakening and Luigi's mansion are super strong and Yoshi is still pretty solid. 2021: Dread, Bowser's fury, a good Mario party/golf and WarioWare put it just ahead. Serviceable remakes from Zelda and Pokemon. 2024 (TBD): The first half of the year has been alright, TTYD being the best. I think Echoes of Wisdom and Brothership have the highest potential but Mario Party is also looking very promising. 2022: My favorite game this year was Kirby and Legends Arceus was pretty good, but looking back Scarlett and Violet actually bring the year down overall for me personally. Plus Strikers was extremely lacking and disappointing. Again, I'm sure Xenoblade brings it up potentially. 2018: So carried by Smash, which is my favorite switch game. Otherwise too port heavy or somewhat lacking original games. 2020: Also carried by Animal Crossing. Age of calamity was good but it was also the year of Origami King. Pikmin 3 is super great but is another port.

    1) 2019 has my favorite Zelda and my favorite Fire Emblem. And there's still more great games on top of that, like Luigi's Mansion and Mario Maker! 2) 2017 is carried by Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart. 3) 2020 has several standout titles with Animal Crossing and Origami King, then some phenomenal re-releases with Xenoblade 1 and Pikmin 3. 4) 2021 is great all-around, but lacks a specific standout title. 5) 2022 has a bigger standout title than 2021 (Xenoblade 3), but fewer great titles surrounding it. 6) 2023... Pikmin 4 failed to meet my expectations for the series, I prefer the old style of 3D Zelda, and Engage was the worst FE in 15 years. I was really disappointed. 7) 2018 only has Smash. 2024 has potential to take first place, assuming Jamboree and Echoes of Wisdom are as good as I expect them to be. Since I haven't played them, however, it's impossible to rank at this point in time. At the very least, I think it's bound to beat 2021.

@@wrosebrock Fire Emblem Three Houses is great, and not just for fans of the Fire Emblem series. It truly was a moment (which is why it got the fan-voted category win at the Game Awards that year) where the masses got into TRPGs, especially when at the time there was an absolute drought in them in the AAA space. Now we have a few more like Advance Wars, Unicorn Overlord, and indies like Wargroove breaking into the genre, but at the time Fire Emblem was basically your only way to get that fix. It also provided Persona fans like myself the closest thing to a calendar RPG on the Switch before Persona was released on it. And all that is not getting into the great cast and world that game brings to the table, alongside the best game soundtrack of 2019 accompanying it all

2017 all the way. BotW is amazing (even thought TotK can make it seem kind of obsolete, idk, I haven't replayed it), Mario Odyssey is amazing as well, full of content, style and great gameplay-wise, I do think it is overshadowed by the BotW hype and deserves more love, ARMS and Splatoon 2 are very good games as well, both more focused on multiplayer and both received a constant flow of content as the year went on. MK8 is also very strong, it is the port from the Wii U. And, last, but not least, Xenoblade 2 is a top-tier JRPG. Snipperclips is inventive as well and worth mentioning as well. I think the fact that NIntendo released BotW and Odyssey so close to each other is simply insane and people simply forget how good Odyssey is bc it was released so way back and doesn't have a sequel like BotW and Splatoon 2

Just saying I am not an animal crossing, Zenoblade or Pokemon fan. 1. 2023 Metroid prime remastered, Tears of the kingdom, Mario wonder, Pikman 4 are the stand outs and ports of the first 2 pikman games , Fire Emblem engage, Kirby return to dreamland remastered, f zero 99 and Mario rpg are solid just made this year thr best. 2.2017 first year breath of the wild, Mario odyssey, Mario kart 8 and splatoon 2 all are some of the top switch games. 3 2019 this is a good year I know first half was slower but both new super Mario u deluxe, box boy and yoshii was good . But Mario maker 2, fire emblem 3 houses , Astro Chain, links awakening and luigi Manson 3 was a very solid line up. 4 2021 Mario 3d world bower’s fury, and Metroid dread are 2 of my favorite switch games. Mario golf and super mario party superstars are solid as well. Rest of the line up not so much. 5 2024 might move up to 4 or even 3 later it’s kind of light first 5 months up to but looks munch better from Papar Mario thousand year door onward and Luigi Manson 2 . Looking toward to Nintendo world championship, Zelda wiaon Mario party and Mario and Luigi. Hoping one or 2 more surprises as well. 6 2018 smash bros, bayonetta 2, captain toad and dk country tropical freeze. Better Mario sports game with tennis over 2022 strikers 7 2022 little better 3d, Kirby, bayo 3, Mario rabbits, splatoon 3 8 2020 none of the first party games are super stand outs for me but Hyrule warriors, paper Mario and Pikman 3 are good enough . And they should have included galaxy 2 in super Mario 3d all stars.

I thought this was gonna be ranking each year on a tier list. That would have been a little more interesting and make you really look at the games. I don’t think any year falls below a B. Kirby is definitely not just there, if you say that about Kirby then Astro Bot should be seen on same level or below because it just looks like the same thing but just more where as Kirby has evolved like Mario. Maybe do a tier list for the first 4 and last 4 years of Switch separately and then do PS5 and series X first 4 years and compare them, that would be interesting and you couldn’t include 3rd party so no Final Fantasy.

I have to raise an eyebrow at Krysta leading with Fire Emblem as a standout for 2019. The Link's Awakening remake did decently, but I don't imagine it'd have been seen as particularly notable overall. Luigi's Mansion 3 was a pleasant surprise that broke through very respectably in terms of sales, so I think that's a fair title of note. Mario Maker 2, despite not hitting as hard as some may have expected is something I'd argue as a highlight alongside Ring Fit Adventure and Pokemon Sword/Shield, which are the first new generation entries on the Switch outright. I agree with Kit regarding the titles mentioned being a step below (at least) what might be expected as highlights for a big year with the exception to Luigi's Mansion 3, but I also do think that there definitely were some clear stand outs for 2019. As for 2020, I agree with Krysta that a Kirby game probably wouldn't make a year, but Star Allies definitely outperformed any FE entries on the platform, so I think it's reasonable to regard in the same discussion where an entry in that series is a highlight. It's also hard to say that Forgotten Land was just 'there' considering how well it did and how well it was received, near doubling the performance of Star Allies despite both being held in similar regard. I'd rank things a bit like this: 1. 2017: The launch year and one that featured the release of multiple tentpoles for thee Switch platform. Great output pace. 2. 2019: Good volume after a lull. Having the first new Pokemon gen, multiple Mario games, and Ring Fit make it stand out. 3. 2023: A varied, high-volume year featuring multiple major releases like Mario Wonder and Tears of the Kingdom. 4. 2022: Not a huge year, but multiple Pokemon titles including a new generation, Splatoon 3, and Switch Sports is decent. 5. 2018: A quiet year, but the first home console mainline Pokemon games alongside Smash Ultimate made the end strong. 6. 2021/2020: 2020 had more options, but by proportion the selection was less interesting than 2021. ACNH is big, though.

@@sirmel11 It's not about liking it or not, it's about impact and reach where the game is concerned amongst the selection of offerings. FE's been doing better since Awakening, but it's certainly not on the bigger end of things. Three Houses is the best selling entry in the franchise and it sold a little less than Kirby Star Allies and around two-thirds of what Kirby Forgotten Land did. By Krysta's estimation, those two games are just 'there'. Overall, that's almost certainly more apt a sentiment for FETH amongst the various other titles released in that year by far.

@@sirmel11 They have different opinions, which is fine. A lot of us have different orders for which years were better. In that case (2019), I agree with the idea that there were stand out games when she was responding to Kit, but I disagree with the selection she mentioned that makes that the case. SWSH came out at the time, but neither really mentioned it, so maybe it was something they didn't enjoy very much or it slipped their minds. Scarlet and Violet were definitely huge. I think 2022 had some big titles despite being a little quieter in terms of volume for first party software releases. Pokemon Legends with Scarlet and Violet are already very strong for first party output. Splatoon 3 is fairly big. Nintendo Switch Sports is also notable and Kirby Forgotten Land was well received and sizable commercially.

@@stranger0-00 I think it depends on whether or not this is based on opinions or facts. Game release wise, I'd put 2017 and 2022 the top. You were talking about how Fire Emblem is more popular now but compared to other series, it's not alright sales wise. I can see that. I wonder how Engage did. Despite what they say, they're not big Pokemon fans. Both dropped Scarlet and Violet and for some reason one of them thought they could only play one of the stories. The game isn't meant to be played like that. Also the supposed issues were a problem for them too I think. Two great Pokemon titles and a great Kirby game made 2022 a standout for me.

2018 made me start resenting the Switch. I thought the whole console’s legacy was just going to be that of stealing the Wii U’s identity. I was sorta wrong, but also kinda right in the end. I just wanted to play new, exciting Nintendo games, but the only game I was looking forward to that held much promise was Smash, and that was at the very end of the year. :/
