    Honestly the one thing I love about Olympus Colosseum is that Zack explicitly asks Aqua on a date, like theirs no euphemisms, theirs no subtlety and it just feels like a guy asking a girl he just got to know if she wants to grab lunch sometime. I think a big thing on Keyblade Graveyard is that this is the first big game in KH that turns from these worldly threats to character threats. Like, yes Xemnas and Ansem are characters you fight, but they are more emblematic of what happens in the KHverse (the end of the worlds (not the world) and a giant wave of nothingness.), while BBS is specifically about how XEHANORT and no one else fucks things up for these people. And that kinda translates to the worlds, where Xehanort just fucks around in a random ruin because he’sobsessed with dead kids.

    I always played as Ven first cuz i thought "well he's the Sora-esque one so i should start with him, right?" I honestly think saving Terra for second or third makes BBS as a whole a much stronger mystery story and doing Terra second helps break up the Ven and Aqua playthroughs which can feel kinda monotonous back-to-back since their Disney world visits feel very similar (they kinda go through the standard movie stuff as opposed to Terra hanging out with the villains all the time) Overall the order which you play the game really doesn't matter that much and going TVA probably makes the story much easier to digest but idk it's still fun to debate

    Greek mythology was not always family friendly, and adaptations like the Disney movie and Rick Riordan Percy Jackson books to various degrees sanitised some of the more family unfriendly stories. For example, in mythology Hercules, or Heracles, was driven mad by Hera and killed his wife which is why he needs to to the twelve labours.

    Finally, my favorite KH game. I started high school when that came out. I still remember going nuts with my psp over how amazing of a KH portable game it is compared to 358/2 Days. I went fully blind with the game, so you can probably guess how I reacted about the plot twists, but overall, it was truly an experience that aged well. I'm gonna replay the final mix version soon. Personally, my favorite BBS world would be Radiant Garden, because of all the new areas that are introduced there, as well as intriguing character interactions(Terra with Braig, Ven with Lea and Isa, Aqua with Kairi, and the short Wayfinder trio reunion). 2nd favorite is probably Castle of Dreams(as Ven).

    9:10 Speaking of pattern recognition, the way Terra enunciates "You _were_ just playing me" indicates that he suspected all along that Hades was trying to manipulate him. When Hades revealed himself, Terra was not surprised in the slightest. A far cry from the "gullible" guy who really didn't have much reason to distrust people he ultimately went along with (including Xehanort, whom Eraqus trusted even after Xehanort scarred him, and even Captain Hook). Yeah, we could definitely have gotten more out of the Land of Departure. Is there more to it than the castle? What else is in the castle aside from the throne room and the bedrooms? How do Keyblade Masters train? (Aside from the "screw it, go into another dimension and figure it out on your own" pattern shown in DDD with Sora and Riku and 3 with Kairi and Lea... Why did Sora and Riku have to relearn everything again?) Eraqus' voiceover suggested that it was important, but they never explained how or why. In fact, the whole role as "seat" of Keyblade Masters was replaced by Scala'acala (to me, it sounded like Christopher Lloyd was gargling marbles in that line delivery, for some reason), so we really don't know what LoD's purpose is aside from having an even more on-the-nose diving board name than Outset Island.

And after realizing it, he immediately switched sides and actually did some trickery himself. And considering Xehanort's repertoire of being a master mainpulator in foreseeing plausible routes for his plan, even tricking his best friend, why is anyone surprised he's able to trick a kid? Like almost all of them didn't suspect him at the time, especially considering his title as a master and he foresaw their mark of mastery? People really only take it into face value at very surface with only two evidence that shows him being tricked and it gets tiring after seeing it once.

    Great video! Completely agree with your keyblade graveyard takes. They kinda shot themselves in the foot with making such an epic, mysterious, hype inducing cinematic before the game even came out. The concept is incredibly cool but actually a little bland to explore. Although I do love the detail of a hole in the mountain with a huge crater where something massive (an attack? zettaflare??) destroyed parts of the landscape. It's a nice bit of lore-through-level-design. Also I miss those days of theorizing about the KH2 secret ending, i remember watching it the first time and being 'Roxas is dead??? they just murdered Roxas right in front of us?' I was kind of disappointed when Ven just kinda unfroze himself through sheer willpower, and that him shattering his frozen keyblade on his way down the cliff had no significance. Also, 9:52 , you should NEVER take IGN reviews into account for anything.

    BBS is definitely overhated, it really doesn't deserve as much hate as it gets. Sure the gameplay is clunky and this is where the classic "story problems" people complain about come in, but overall, it really is much better than some of the others. I mean, could you honestly say you'd rather play Days, Coded, or even Dream Drop? Idk thats just my opinion but I think BBS is definitely in the top 5 at least, it's probably in my top 3. I really enjoy the expanding of the story, which allows me to look past the gameplay issues, which are even excused because it was originally made for the PSP.

I imagine it's always been there in the void for Keyblade wielders to just hang out and have fun and no one knows why it's there, and it honestly brings me great joy imagining Xehanort and Eraqus going on a date there to play some Kingdom Hearts Fortune Street. Still hate that they cut all the multiplayer features out of the HD releases, though, because my partner and I love Command Board and wish we could play it against each other. still, it is incredibly humorous seeing the CPU players use a space that allows you to warp anywhere on the board to simply move one space to the right.

    I think part of my affinity for Disney Town stems largely from my childhood nostalgia for family vacations to Walt Disney World. Disney Town resembles the style of the Toon Town section of the park very well, as you pointed out, and it really helps me to not feel as bad about being unable to afford a vacation in my adulthood. Gizmo Gallery might have visually inspiration drawn from the Mickey MouseWorks shorts (which were later repurposed for House of Mouse, and which may have also informed the comedy involving Pete here), but the level design reminds me a LOT of N64 platformers specifically. Tick Tock Clock from Super Mario 64 is the obvious first comparison, but it also feels laid out a lot like a 3D collectathon. Considering the minigame-oriented nature of the world, that's a pretty cool coincidence if it wasn't intended. Also thank you for appreciating the Fruitball game, I always have to argue with people about how amazing the sheer chaos of that minigame is.

    I think DisneyTown spot is perfect, unlike Olympus here. I would say it’s a bit of an upgrade from just the castle portion in KH2 (Not counting Timeless River) and a neat way to incorporate a mini game world without using a book or making it a musical. Also as for Lands of Departure. I definitely agree that it should’ve been more explored and expanded upon both exploration and narrative wise. I always just went with the concept that it was the last resort for Keyblade wielders to train in peace. But looking back it would’ve been so cool if it got it’s own COR or Atleast you got to explore the remaining ruins of the castle to evoke a sense of loss&sadness for this world. I really hope in a future game that we’ll get to explore more of it with Kairi/Aqua during their training. Maybe they could include a area similar to Mount Olympus.

    TVA is the intended order? I played it AVT and found a lot of enjoyment from it, and would suggest anyone play it in that way too, I mean I initially just picked it based on who I wanted to play most, but looking back on it even with a foggy memory; A might "spoil" a lot but she's the one that brings the whole story together, V is just kind of it's own thing but naturally comes after the ending of A because you want to find out what happened with V's side of things, and finding out what happened to T is a really good ending in my opinion. might be worth a video to give your opinion on "best way to play through the game for new players"

  • @zaqareemalcolm

    TVA is only the intended order mainly because it was written in that order, which I guess can be seen by the decreasing amount of missing context between the stories. I imagine it might also have to do with the learning curve for each of the characters too since irrc, alot of players felt out of the three Aqua is not the most accessible/beginner friendly character to play at in the first couple of worlds being very command and magic reliant at a point of the game where such options are naturally lacking (unless you go grind command board or something lol), and especially with the "whack everything first" style of play intuitive to KH games.

Out of all the worlds, iirc it’s Ven in Castle of Dreams who has all the free play maps exclusive to him (Aqua does use the wardrobe room to do an escort mission with Jacques, but that’s scripted and Aqua can’t return there). The technical limitations on NCPs is also highly noticeable, with the standing in the world NCPs all being established Disney characters, and a couple of cutscenes bringing attention to crowds that simply aren’t rendered (Terra in Castle of Dreams and the Coliseum).

    Thing I do like about Keyblade Graveyard is seeing the enormous terrain-shaping scars of war implying that some serious God-tier magic was being thrown around during the Keyblade War. Hundreds -- if not thousands -- of people clearly died here, and the world still remembers. Gave the place this atmosphere that something _BAD_ happened here, and if you don't stop Xehanort, it'll happen again.

    Xehanort wasn't really lying to Terra to be honest, there wasn't anything wrong with controlling darkness as long as it's balanced by light, Terra would've been a pretty good master, while aqua almost killed a fucking family because she smelled darkness, thanks to the teachings of Eraqus, a light obsessed dumbass that was ready to murder his adoptive son the moment a chance of darkness being freed was presented. In Terra's perspective he's just a master with a more open view on things helping him with his flaws better than the people that are treating him like shit. Eraqus is the real villain, he's the reason the trio gets separated and taken advantage of in the first place, caused several chest lockpicking threats to multiple people, and all he does is hug his homie to paradise and not even give terra the title of master...

  • @Vigriff

    @Vigriff

    3 жыл бұрын

    It baffles me that someone like Eraqus gets the Master title when he has the kind of mindset that would cause more problems than solve. Hell, as much as I don't like Dark Road, the end of Episode 3 only emphasizes that Eraqus really shouldn't have gotten that title. I don't care what standards the Keyblade Masters had at that time, extremism is almost never the answer.

  • @Yurikon3

    @Yurikon3

    @@Vigriff I don't know, by that time Darkness hadn't really showed any proper benefits that being extremely against it sounds only reasonable choice. The bigger problem is that Eragus was simply too bland character who was not allowed to counterbalance Villain Sue's extremism in sensible manner. Eragus has more gravitas for his stance and his decision to attack Ven was mostly just lazy writing. It could have been done, but required more build-up. Overall the series hasn't really given any proper reasons to let darkness run amock so to see Eragus being some big bad cause he sees what darkness does and is not really willing to let that slide is just weird. It would have worked better if Terra's journey's had given any substantical real reasons to let darkness have a chance (no... not just purple-colored beams) and really challenge master's perception. If anything Eragus was right as Terra got possessed in the end. And honestly, Terra seeing Xehanort as some sort of comfort and "open minded" is just a way how Xehanort fooled Terra.

    Disney town was okay but I think I liked Land of departure a little better. your description was spot on. Keyblade graveyard could have been way cooler, they should have had you running through Mountains and Valleys filled with cast aside keyblades, I would have probably put land of departure barely above it. I was super under leveled when I made it to the final boss fights as Ventus and Aqua so the difficulty spike was a bit of a pain but I think I enjoyed playing Aqua here the most because her fights felt the like you had the most autonomy, and didn't just have to memorize the attacks and counter each respectively

    I have to say, my favorite character in this game is a kind of unconventional choice… But, if I had to rank my three favorites, it would look something like this: 3. Terra 2. Vanitas 1. Zack Fair I know, I know, Zack isn’t that good of a character, and his plot is mostly a retread of both that of KHII Auron with vague references to Crisis Core. But I find him to be wholesome, and he inspired a rare moment of visible emotion in Aqua when he pulled his “How about one date?” line on her. Also, I like how (in his credits scene), a black feather falls down in front of him, and it’s rather ambiguous as to whether this is a reference to Sephiroth or Genesis. I just love love love Zack the Puppy.

Also, I got your same problems with the land of departure (or the problems you mention in that section, I guess) but for some reason I weigh them a lot heavier, to the point where BBS was close to my least favourite in the series until I replayed it in like October. To what you said about Land of Departure, I think that a good solution would have been to add a day where you see them actually train. No, not just spar with each other or whatever, I mean where you see Eraqus demonstrating something with all three, or just Aqua and Terra, attempting to learn it - or it could be less obvious, since both of them are nearly masters, it could have a seniors during the last week of high school vibe where they're kinda just doing their own thing but still within the routine and structure of regularly scheduled lessons. Perhaps that vibe could contrast Ven who's still very much learning things, and be at a much earlier stage in becoming a master, and that would make his conflict a lot more palpable as well as further flesh out Terra and Aqua by virtue of that comparison. But I guess what's the point about reminicing on what could be, lol. Hey, maybe the community will make a "Kingdom Hearts Retold" giant mod project that attempts to make the game and story suck a lot less, make the powerful moments and message clearer and more powerful. Ah, oh well, just a dream.

    Hi I don't know why I'm here five months later and surprised to see my own comment just wanted to say that it's worth noting Mirage Arena in its original release was where you'd go for multiplayer, which BBS had, and that's why it's not at Olympus and is why it's so weird and non-canony. that's also why you have those weird team commands and emotes, because you were meant to PvP and Co-op with them. Alas. I really hope somebody figures out how to reintroduce that assuming Square didn't absolutely gut the feature in porting it to the collections. Oh. and command board. you could play that with other people too. kind of a "oh wait, that makes complete sense" moment. I 100% get why people dunk on BBS, but it irks me a lot because the PSP original is soooo much better in admittedly small ways but it's in _many_ small ways. I always kinda feel conflicted and outside the conversation with BBS because I remember loving it on PSP when I was 14 or whatever but being eh on it on PC now 8 years later.

    Someone might have already mentioned this, but BBS Disney Town reminded me of an old online game Disney made just called Disney ToonTown, which I think was based off of an in park digital experience. I only played it a little when I was much, much younger, so what I have to go off of in memory is very little. Not sure how much of a connection is there to what is in BBS though, but either way seeing it in game brought that memory back to me!

    I've only played BBS in KH 2.5, but my theory about the length of the intro is that the game was made with the PSP in mind. So they might expect you to want to get right to the action if you only have 30 minutes on the bus to school or whatever. I also feel that is the reason for the command board design, which gives you frequent, miniature level-ups.

  • @justinfrost7970

    I like the artstyle, the creative command decks, and the story isn't the worst of these games. What I don't like is the sheer amount of frame traps you can fall into because of the floaty controls. I also have this problem with kh3 and partially ddd when I'm in flowmotion. Still really good games, but are definitely flawed bc of their combat systems

  • @radicaldreamer927

    What holds this game back for me (not just Yen Sid's tower) is how little care the devs had for continuity. Donald in BBS: **is very clearly present in Yen Sid's tower along with Goofy when Ven is there** Donald in KH2, which takes place after: "MaStEr YeN sId LiVeS hErE??" Then, when the photo of Roxas is given to them by Riku, neither one of them recognizes him despite his looking exactly like Ventus. I don't know if any kind of explanation or justification was given for this, but if so, and it involves Naminé just overlooking those links when she was putting their memories back together, that is lazy and I don't like it. But Michael losing his shirt in the Realm of Darkness? Now THAT was the continuity we truly needed, apparently. 😕

    I think your assessment of Keyblade Graveyard is right, and your statement of The Journey being better than The Destination really sums up why I agree. There were actually a lot of BBS' systems I liked AS I was figuring them out but found uninteresting or outright bad as I reached the endgame. Though I'll admit freely that some of that was due to my penchant for 100%ing things and being frustrated as I looked up how much bullshit I was going to have to put up with if I wanted to 100% BBS - the skill/spell collection in particular.

I mean we have heartless that are literally Giants why not also have a few people that fight heartless be that size
