Ranking Every Beauty and the Beast Movie Adaptation

So...I clearly have spent way too much time watching 26 adaptations of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, and here is my very subjective ranking of them. This is a new series I want to start on my channel. How many of these have you seen and what classic tale should I rank next?

I am very glad you give the French 2014 movie the praise it deserves, because I believe that it is very underrrated. The costumes and the scenery are just spectacular and they make you travel to a fantasy world.

I love Panna et Netvor. I also love La Belle et La Bete, but Panna et Netvor is so amazing. The Disney animated one is still my favorite. It's almost perfect as far as everything going right for an animated movie. I did like that they gave a reason for the prince being turned into a Beast. They were the first or very nearly the first to give a moral lesson for the prince. Most adaptations, there is absolutely no reason for him to be cursed.

I have made all my friends watch the French 2014, and it's so good! Cinderella-I wrote my college thesis on the differences between several adaptations from different cultures. It would be a big task to watch because there are so many-SO GOOD. A smaller video would be Swan Princess or The Princess and the Pea. Loved this video thanks!!

This is such an amazing video! I had a fairy tale project on the go which fell by the wayside some time ago and I really want to get back into it again. I used to love that 1987 Beauty and the Beast show - used to watch it with my mum when it was on TV! I really loved the Belle and Rumple relationship in Once Upon a Time - the early seasons of that show were so good and Robert Carlyle was so great in it. The French film at number 1 looks absolutely stunning. Ditto the Japanese anime film. Can’t wait for more in this series!

I love the 48 French adaptation just because I adore experimental surrealist cinema. I do agree that the 2014 is stunning, and I wanted some of Belle's dresses (and the Prince is handsome). I did like the Cannon Movie tales one because of nostalgia for the whole 9 film series (my favorite though was the Rumplestilskin). Belle and Rumple were my couple on OUAT (along with Regina and Robin). I'm half tempted to watch Mirage simply because Sherylin Fenn who is a beloved actress in my Twin Peaks Fandom. I'd love to see you rank Cinderella films/miniseries/TV shows, just to see where you put Slipper and the Rose, which is my favorite film of all time.

I love so many of them including The Snow Queen, The 3 Little Pigs and Rapunzel. They are so classic. Did you watch Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series as well? That is great too. The two Disney versions of Beauty and the Beast are my favorites. So good. @@AnneEWilliamson Yes, the original Goldilocks was an old woman. But instead of running away when the bears come home, this old hag hides in the closet. They catch her there and try to throw her into the fire. But she doesn't burn. So they try to drown her. But as Monty Python says... if she's a witch she will float. So finally, they impale her on the churchyard steeple. When the book was changed from poetry to prose, that steeple became St Pauls and we are told that she can still be seen there today. Lovely bedtime reading for children, isn't it?

An excellent list. I believed you covered everything. I have seen most of these and agree with most of your ranking. My favorites are the Cocteau version (insuperable), Disney 1991, the French version 2014. I also liked Panna a Netvor for its uniqueness and dark tone, the dynamic and chemistry between George C. Scott and Trish Van de Vere in 1976 (I think it's the version in which the two leads spend more time together and you can really see the love grow, although he's certainly too old, but his acting as the Beast is magnificent), and Ron Perlman's fabulous make up in the TV show. I didn´t like Prince Leon in the Italian mini series. His scars are very small and he's a complete jerk from start to finish. I like the Beast to be a real hairy Beast, not a dude with issues. I didn't like the 2017 live action. It pales against the animated version and Emma Watson's performance is quite wooden and lacks emotion. In the Fairy Tale Theater version they follow Cocteau almost scene by scene and the Beast turns into a very creepy Klaus Kinski. The Prince tends to be always lame when compared to the Beast, with the exception of Dan Stevens, who is very handsome, and specially Vincent Cassell in the 2014 version. I like that Belle gets to see him in her dreams and she understands that he is the Beast without having it spelled out to her. Cassell is handsome in an unconventional way, very masculine, mature and sexy, and his Beast is both fierce and attractive. I also loved the end of the movie, which I won't spoil here, but which is the most logical resolution for many reasons. Thank you for your video.

Wow, that a brilliant comment. Your analysis is spot on and I agree with you on everything! And it is interesting you mention the Fairy Tale Theater following Cocteau's, because I noticed similarities as well and I didn't know they were purposeful. And yes, Emma Watson's acting was so bad! But I loved the music, and Dan Stevens was a such a good beast!
