oh im so glad! honestly self catering isn't too bad because you'll have to cook for yourself in 2nd and 3rd year so you might as well get used to it!

@@naag_nool absolutely not. you have no access to cooking resources (ie stove, fridge) and a lot of colleges won’t let you keep things like kettles, mini fridges, or microwaves in your room. if you want to self cater, you should only apply to a self catered college.

Heya, South student here! the ensuites are flats on top of each other like you said, but townhouses are a whole like column of building per flat. Each floor has 4 rooms and 2 bathrooms and the kitchen on the bottom floor which you share with all 12 people in your building. Hope this made sense!

No lies spoken about Butler! Especially about the people 😏 A note for anybody put off by the location, I will say you can get the Park and Ride which stops literally outside the college and drops you into town. When I was in first year it was £1-2 for a day saver if you showed your ID! ❤️

@syd ewing BTW, Durham's 2023/2024 fresher's college accommodation preference is ending on the 23rd of April (Sunday). Part 2 would be super helpful for a lot of freshers (including me :) for our college selections.

I've heard you have to move out each term in some colleges. Which colleges can you live in year-round?

i’m not entirely sure, as you have to move out of college at the end of first year into private housing. you can apply to stay in college but it’s not guaranteed you’ll be approved. i think it will come down to the individual college honestly, it might be worth trying to get in contact now to see if that’s something they’re willing to do.

is self catered cheaper than catered?

you do have to pay for your own food and in the cost of living crisis it’s definitely something to keep in mind as my grocery bills have gone up massively

if you can, maybe go through and do a fake weekly shop online on tescos to see what you’d spend on groceries every week and factor that in to the cost self catered versus catered xxx

Durham is so overrated. 198th in the THES World rankings. So many UK universities are better - Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, KCL, Manchester, Bristol, Warwick, Glasgow . . .

i think it’s dependent on the program you’re applying to as durham does outrank these universities in some regard
