Ranking Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors from Worst to Best - Harry Potter Theory

Ойын-сауық

In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Defense Against the Dark Arts. Defense Against the Dark Arts is a CORE subject taught at Hogwarts that (purportedly) teaches students how to defend themselves against dark magic. More specifically- we’re going to be taking a look at the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching role at Hogwarts- and deep diving in to each and every professor- ranking them from worst to best. However, I will mention this - I’m only going to be including the main DADA professors during the storyline of the books. There were many professors BEFORE the earliest professor on this list, and there will be many AFTER the latest professor on this list.
Now, if you’re a proper Harry Potter fan- then you’ll know that the Defense Against the Dark Arts position is cursed. This is because, years ago, Tom Riddle (Voldemort himself) was denied the role- and decided to CURSE the position. The resulting curse meant that, for as long as the role existed, no professor would be able to hold the position for more than 1 school year. And Tom was true to his word- after cursing the role, each and every professor had their own unique reason for vacating the role. With such an abundance of different professors in one role- there has certainly been some variety- and today I want to take a look at each of these unique individuals. Which ones were the worst? The best? Which ones actually..Taught the children something?
Without further ado I present to you: every Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher ranked from WORST to BEST.

Remus Lupin wasn't just the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher during the seven books, he was quite possibly the greatest formal teacher Harry ever had, and a genuinely great man.

What about Minerva? The one Who bought Harry a new broom? Got hit By spells from Umbridge while protecting her students and Harry? Genuinely cared about Harry and said he’s not a piece of meat? Didn’t let Harry go to hogsmede because he Hadn’t gotten the paper signed but mainly because there was killer on the loose? Chose not to expel Ron and Harry? Remus might be a father figure and a teacher to Harry but he wasn’t the best teacher to Harry he was only a teacher for one year while Minerva taught Harry for years and protected Harry from harm as best as she could but so did Remus tbh I feel li,e Minerva is severely underrated

It wasn't just to eat but, specifically, to eat chocolate after a dementor attack. You don't get any more than that in the movies. It's basically just "Here, have a candy bar. You'll feel better," and that's it. In the books, however, Madam Pomfrey, the Hogwarts school healer, remarks something to the effect of, "It's good that some people still know the old cures" when she is told that Lupin gave them chocolate after the dementor attack, and at the end of "The Prisoner of Azkaban" she makes Harry & Hermione eat chocolate to help them recover from being attacked by the dementors. In the movie, it only shows Harry & Sirius being attacked by the dementors there on the lakeshore, but in the book, Hermione is also with them. She wasn't attacked as badly as Harry & Sirius. The dementors attempted to administer their fatal kiss to both of them before they were driven off by Harry's patronas, but the attack on Hermione was still serious enough to leave her unconscious for quite some time. Madam Pomfrey made both her & Harry eat several pieces of chocolate to help them recover.

I would have switched Quirrell and Lockhart. Also, people tend to put Snape high when they make this list but something to consider is that although Snape was the most talented and powerful out of all of these teachers, I would argue that he wasn't a good teacher. The reason people tended to do terribly in his potion class was that he was overly harsh and played favorites. Harry even commented on this when he was taking his potions OWL. His test went much better than expected because Snape wasn't there. I'm sure it would have been the same when he taught DADA. When people are naturals at a skill, like Snape was with magic, they tend to be terrible at teaching people that same skill. Teaching is a skill all its own and it was one that Snape didn't have. He was unquestionably an amazing wizard but a terrible teacher.

I think the idea behind Snape being a good teacher was because he became a lot more relaxed with DADA compared to potions. This is probably because it was the role that he had clearly been wanting ever since he started working there, and isn't a constant reminder of Lily; if I recall correctly, Snape only got good at potions to impress her.

@@magiccloud3074 I agree. I think the assessment of Quirrel is a bit harsh as well considering how we only really see what he taught 1st year students, who you realistically wouldn't expect to learn anything too dangerous. I'd say Lockheart and Umbridge were joint worse due to not teaching anything useful followed by Carrow (even if Crabe did die due to his inability to control Fiend Fire he was still seemingly able to teach something), Snape (for the reasons you mentioned), Quirrel, Barty Jnr. and Lupin.

He turned out fewer exceptional students than other Potions masters, but those who did succeed went on to do many great things. However, Snape is described as having been an even better DADA professor since it was the topic he was passionate about. He was even willing to take students with lower O.W.L. grades because he would teach them to become the best. But that's just what the books/J.K. Rowling says.

I have only one difference in my ranking - Snape is even lower with me, under Quirrell and Lockhart, but above Carrow and Umbridge. The reasoning is, while Snape was a great expert on both dark arts and DADA and his teachings were very valuable, he was a bad teacher. Blatant favoritism combined with bullying attitude and using dread as a tool in teaching merges into a teacher that's so hurtful to his students' psyche that it offsets his undeniable expertise, ranking him IMO below the "blanks". I'm a teacher myself and, while neither is good, I would far rather "teach like Quirrell" than "teach like Snape". That said, Lupin, McGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout were the best teachers Hogwats had. I aspire specifically to teach like somewhere between Lupin and Flitwick.

  • @chocochipjewel

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Alche_mist You make a valid point. I'm still a student, and if I had a teacher like Snape, I don't think I would even want to attend the school anymore. His treatment of the Gryffindors, Harry and Neville in particular, are so hard to excuse. That said, he was knowledgeable about the dark arts, and that has to account for something, especially cause I can't say Lockhart was especially knowledgeable about anything other than memory magic. Quirrel didn't seem particularly skillful in anything either. So based off of that, I ranked him higher. But if I was ranking them based off of how they treat the class, Snape would be just above Carrow. Lupin, Flitwick, Sprout, and McGonagall are definitely the best teachers there, I agree with you on that. Slughorn seems pretty good as well, but his favoritism is a flaw, as the whole concept of the Slug Club is built off his ambition to have the best students with him. Still leagues better than Snape tho

My list would be: #6: Umbitch: Apart from Hermione I don't think any student learnt anything from her that year. #5: Amycus Carrow: Teaching dark arts also means learning about how they work and what the weak points are. Students can then find out how to defend against it. Even though he was a very bad teacher, he was still better than Umbitch. #4: Lockhart: The video explained enough :) #3: Quirrel: He still taught the students about DADA, so not DA like Carrow, and he really thaught the students something, unlike Umbitch, and he was more capable than Lockhart. #2: Severus Snape: Plenty of knowledge about the subject, really taught DADA and the students learnt a lot. However, we're still talking about Snape, so if you're not a Slytherin you'll still have a hard time when you're in his classroom (understatement). #1: Lupin and Moody/Crouch jr.: They both were excellent teachers. Lupin knew a lot about dark creatures and how to deal with them. Moody/Crouch jr. knew a lot about dark wizards, dark spells etc and how to deal with them. He even taught the students how to break out of the imperius charm (books, not the movie). Because of this they are both #1 Edit: I know it's spelled "Umbridge"

This was my list starting from the bottom: Lockhart: I don’t think I need to say anything Quirrell: Yeah it was a toss up between him and Lockhart but in the end he beat Lockhart. Umbridge: probably hated her more than Belatrix and Voldemort combined, but at least she had the characters study something even if it was useless. Carrow: he taught them dark arts Instead of defence, so if I were to play devils advocate he would of been a great teacher for dark arts. Snape: Good teacher and had clear knowledge I was considering putting him in second place but but there was someone who had a slight lead. Moody/barty: he was a good teacher, he didn’t shy away from showing the students the unforgivables and giving them an idea of what it would he like to really have to defend yourself in a real situation, he didn’t coddle them. Remus: do I have to explain, best teacher ever, love him and his teaching methods, ability to make lessons fun and interactive, while still teaching.

While Amycus taught Dark Arts not defence he still did practical teaching whereas Umbridge did no practical teaching so I think he was a better teacher for that reason even if the subject matter was slightly twisted. Personally, i think that Barty should be in second place, he may have been a death eater, but when it comes to his teaching abilities, he was actually good at it, an overall, he was even better at comunicating with the students than Snape.

Another reason why Lupin was the best DADA teach and best teacher in general, he wasn't let the students be in a more casual enviroment, refering to them by their first name and not their family name like with every student. It showed that not only was he there to teach. But he was there to be, for lack of a better term, a friend to the students

If so here's one: "What if Harry had remembered that he got a mirror from Sirius for christmas that he could use to contact him, which he had stored in his trunk all the frigging time while he thought Sirius was in danger?"

I would say that Carrow was a better teacher than Umbridge, or even Lockhart for that matter, simply because he actually taught the students, albeit in a frightening and destructive way that led to much chaos and pain.

  • @emmamarkel8410

I would rank the teachers (as far as teaching in general, I know a couple of them were revealed to be villains later on, but I'm not gonna let that effect their ratings) 1. Remus Lupin 2."Alastor Moody" 3. Professor Quirrel 4. Severus Snape (he may be very experienced but he bullies his students) 5. Gilderoy Lockhart 6. Delores Umbridge (who's about 2 centimeters away from last place) 7. Amycus Carrow

  • @jkrause365
    @jkrause3653 жыл бұрын

I had forgotten all about Carrow. While I might quibble with your middle choice rankings, I certainly agree with placing Remus Lupin at the top of the list. Played to perfection by David Thewlis, Lupin might have arisen to the level of one of the best instructors at Hogwarts had circumstances been different.

my theory as to why Barty Crouch Jr/ Moody’s class was actually good is that Barty was under the imperious curse and told to act just like moody, so basically he’d be a sleeper cell until the time came to command him to do otherwise.

VIDEO IDEA: so we know magic is genetic and in your DNA. Is being magic binary (wizard or muggle, no in between) or is there a gradient? Like are there muggles walking around that just miss the cutoff to get into Hogwarts and can do small magic things? And wizards who are just magical enough to be included in the magic world? And does all this time into how powerful a wizard/witch is?

My understanding is that their personalities are based on how they were in life so presumably the paints which are used capture some of the subject's essence or that's added with another spell which also animates them.
