I think Usopp's original Jolly Roger is referencing how he would "cry pirate" every morning, basically screaming at the top of his lungs. The fact that he was giving that role up probably was part of what led him to making the new design

Lots of people criticize Hody for the steroids (as in the cost of using them) but I think that's another example of him not thinking things through

The only real issue I have with judging the pirate crew names is that they don't always get to select their own names. The Straw Hats being the best example of this since we know that it was Smoker who came up with the name. So it is not unlikely that after the marines deal with a rookie irate crew for the first time, if the crew doesn't identify themselves during the encounter they simply come up with a name for the crew themselves. Of course the marines being government employees they will often select the laziest method possible and just use the Captain's name as the crews name.

Totally get you, but for example Kid could have easily landed on an island and before raiding and cruzifying everyone he could have screamed: "WE ARE THE PUNK PIRATES!" or something like that. especially at the stage where they just received their first or second bounties this would have been a tactic to establish your name.

Roger's theme was jolly, all his crew mates are always shown smiling or symbolize laughter(bugger the clown) unless tom isn't the embodiment of jolly. It also goes with your theory because you could say they were the jolly Roger pirates, but it got shorten to Roger pirates because the world government doesn't want pirates and jolly to be related, the jolly Roger is also smiling. Yeah, I also thought the reason could be the submarine. I mean, it's unique, but at the same time is not like you see it and inmmediatly think they are pirates. Also, the reason could be their flag. It is an awesome tribute to Corazon, but for me is hard to relate their jolly Roger to their crew theme

2:25:56- it really makes sense for Whitebeard to be S-Tier out of the OG Emperors. He doesn't have Shanks' somewhat questionable connections to the World Government in spite of being a decent man regardless with his power making up for his non-crew theme/standard pirate ship nor is he like Big Mom/Kaido/Blackbeard who are overstylized/lacking all the features of a Pirate crew as well as letting their very personal issues from their past lead them to being messed up. He's truly a man on men and having the most consistent theme/Pirate iconography all around.

They are assigned by the World Government and Marines as to what to refer to them as. What do you think the real life Captain Teach aka Black Beard's pirate crew was called? THE BLACKBEARD PIRATES! Because they are captained by Blackbeard and he's the one the Spanish and English put a bounty out on. Same thing with Luffy's crew, they are called the Straw Hat Pirates not because that's what they wanted to be called, but because Luffy was the one with the initial bounty and the most identifiable thing on Luffy was his Straw Hat, and was likely sighted at other islands with that hat. They could have been called the Luffy Pirates if he didn't have the hat. Kid's crew is "The Kid Pirates" not because they weren't original, but because Eustace "Captain" Kid was building up a bounty, and thus they were referred to as the Kid Pirates. The world government would never call them the Captain Pirates, or the Punk Pirates, because they want people to be afraid of them and let Marines know if they saw them so they can take them out. So I'm sorry Tekking, but this "Named after the captain and your docked a point" rule is pretty dumb and not historically accurate to ACTUAL pirates.

Not dressing the same or looking alike is the Strawhat theme. Whats similar about them is that they are a hopdgepodge group of unique individuals journeying together free to chase their own dreams, under a captain who has one of the biggest dreams in the op verse. Also each characters aesthetic/fighting style suits their role. Plus their small group is quite diverse, which is a theme in of itself. Huge miss here

last name "Crap" is insane

1:15:24- their ship is standard in design compared to the more outlandish crews and the crew name doesn't mesh with the flag- they don't even stick to the name theme, but can you really argue when you're one of the strongest crews in the story. I think the coolness and badass nature of the pirates more than make up for it.

Straw hat crew theme is inclusion. Luffy doesn’t care who you are or what race you are - he just cares whether you are a good person. The theme of inclusion is highlighted in how different each member is. Grossly simplified to exaggerate point: - Luffy: goofy rubber human - Zoro: Japanese dude - Nami: female thief - Usopp: African dude - Sanji: Pervert Cook (Royalty) - Chopper: Reindeer - Robin: Devil’s Child - Franky: Cyborg - Brook: Skeleton - Jimbei: Fishman Just looking at the live action and how many accents and people from different countries the straw hat crew has shows that they are meant to represent a multicultural society that works together in harmony! The Straw Hats looking very different from each other actually supports their theme 😊

About Krieg In Japanese the "don" is using the kanji for boss which is read as "shuryo" but in anime it's "don" even if it makes no sense His Japanese name is "Kriek". Just because a name means something in a certain language it shouldn't matter because Nami means "wave" but her name is NAMI and NOT Wave. Usopp is a play on "usotsuki" which means liar, Sanji could mean either 3 o'clock or third son, and so on. Similarly Inuarashi and Nekomamushi both mean Dogstorm and Catviper as per the official however it's their NAMES, not titles so it should NOT have been translated.

Perfect example of dunning Kruger. Japanese is all about imagery and word play. And oda takes that to the extreme. So discounting a word that sounds like another language is just you not knowing oda. And saying that you shouldn't translate fictional names is just ignorant. Oda choose those names because they mean dogstorm and cat viper. So to not translate it would be neutering oda's work and taking meaning for the viewer away. I get it, you leaned a tiny bit about Japanese. But you still don't know anything about oda, or writing. So your conclusions were totally wrong.

@@trumpisthemessiah7017 I speak Japanese, don't assume I agree about Oda choosing certain names because of what they are in their respective languages of origin or whatever the reason, but that's beside the point. Either translate them all, or none of them. Again, Inuarashi is his name, so is Nami, what makes it okay to translate one and not the other? It doesn't, Stepehn Paul just messed up. Also, Oda chose Whitebeards LAST name to be EDWARD as we can see with Edward Newgate and Edward Weevil. Sure that was once a last name in old English but nowadays it's mostly associated with first names. While we're at the topic of names, people don't read the original but the Gorosei are "Saint" in titles, not as their names. But you probably already knew that right? 👍

This never actually happened in the manga, this is anime filler only. If you only take into account the canon story of the manga, Hody really never had close interactions with humans. In the manga, when Fukaboshi fights Hody and asks him what humans did to him, he coldly replies "Nothing.", which underlined the crazyness and unfounded blind racism of Hody.
