I think the island themes in country are more diverse and interesting than tropical freeze. Probably the setting lent itself to that being all on one island rather than across several so the beach water palm tree vibe didn’t have to carry over. The Dinosaur and factory islands were fantastic

Fun fact: Retro Studios didn't use the Kremlings nor King K. Rool in Donkey Kong County Returns simply because they just didn't like them. That's why they came up with the Tiki Tong Tribe. And the Snowmads in it's next installment, Tropical Freeze

Maybe they wanted to be different than Rare so they chose different enemies. Most people buying the game would rather have the Kremlings anyway so that's a silly reason.

It's a glaring oversight on their part and it really takes away from the experience for people who grew up with the original series. Kremlins are a better and more understandable group of villains than whatever they created. If they had used K Rool and Kremlins I think the new series would be regarded as better overall.

The first one will always have a special place in my childhood

Maybe it’s just because of nostalgia and the memories I have attached to it, but damn. To see DKCR in last place hurt my soul. That was the first game I ever played and man did I love every single moment of it. Yeah it had a somewhat reused soundtrack but they updated it making it sound even cleaner. That was the game that got me into DK, and into video games in general. Although the motion controls were definitely a little annoying at times

Donkey Kong Country Returns was my first ever Donkey Kong game I ever played and as of I know the motion controls are the best and the best part about them is that it makes the game so engaging especially that after each boss fight you can use the Wii remote and nunchuk to literally punch and beat the heck out of the bosses. I grew up with that game as of it deserves to be #1.

I always felt 3 was underrated, even as a kid when I still had SNES and all my frens had moved on to N64 or Playstation. I mean the level mechanics and designs were so original and creative. Doorstop dash, the lightning river level, the elephant water levels, buzzsaw, etc. Plus you had the country bears and the semi open world aspect, great bonus levels and unique bosses. I'm not sure 3 deserves to beat out the rest but i just think it's underrated haha. That's my two cents

Its my favourite but truthfully people tend to prefer the SNES games and it's common opinion that Tropical freeze is better

Nintendo probably forced them to use motion controls in returns and that was removed on the 3ds version so I think that criticism is fairly weak, honestly returns is one of the best games in the series

Personally, I'd switch 3 and 1, maybe put it above TF. 3 was indeed a slight downgrade from 2, but not nearly enough to reverse course to worse than 1! As for its relation to TF... I'll be honest, I once considered each of them the best in the series, so the difference is basically splitting hairs for me.

I love the atmosphere of DKC2 and the music but I’m most nostalgic for returns!

My 4 year old niece and I love playing SNES and DKC2 and 3 are some of her favorite games. The graphics hold up really well and the game play is so varied and fun. It's so fun showing these games to a new generation of kids

Did you forget that there is a better version of donkey Kong tropical freeze. It’s on the switch, and it has another mode where you can play as funky Kong. Also you should rank all of the Pokémon generations.

Tropical Freeze was the first DKC I played back in 2014 and it showed me just how bad the New Super Mario Bros. series really is :D

DK is the best 2D platform series ever made. Mario might be more iconic, but DK is a lot more memorable, looks phenomenol, and plays even better

Great list, DKC2 is one of my favorite games.

Donkey Kong country tropical freeze is my second favourite game of all time, with it’s amazing music, gorgeous level designs and each level being unique, this is an amazing experience that I feel is very underrated due to its release on the wii u, I’m glad it got its rerelease on the switch to have the same incredible experience as the concle I grew up with. This game is amazing and for those who haven’t tried it, check it out.

I’m super late to DKC series since I didn’t have the SNES, but I grabbed the original trilogy off the 3ds eshop before it closes, it’s a great series

eh....I wouldn't call the motion controls in dkc returns tacked on. the whole using motion controls to do the hand slap was pretty good. Also eh....the tikis weren't that lame. They were kind of interesting and had interesting variants of them as well. I also wouldn't say the game lacks identity. Punch out wii had almost no new fighters at all for example and still had identity. So even if most of the level themes were from the original snes game it still has it's identity and original level themes. Same with even if most music are covers from the original games. I wouldn't say that makes part of the game forgettable at times. But hey it was my first donkey kong country game so yeah.

I put on purple LED strip lights and just load up to the first bonus area in DKC. Nothing feels as nostalgic for me (aside from the magitek walking through the snow toward Narshe)

All my favourite games come in last place on your ranking lists My list from worst go best is dkc3, dkc1, dkc 2 dkctf and finally dkc returns

DKC3 is pretty cool gameplay even the giant spider is my favorite boss fight

3:32 Planks of wood are dangerous, especially in Donkey Kong Country 4.

In defence of DKCR: There is a 3DS version, so that means that you can play it on the go, there are no motion controls, and there is an easy mode for what was the new generation of DKC fans

New players better be thankful for that easy mode, as without, DKCR could be considered the hardest DKC game of all time (especially in hard mode). With jagged jewels hard mode possibly being the hardest level in the whole entire franchise (95/100 difficulty).

I haven't played Tropical Freeze. My personal favorite is the original Donkey Kong Country. I think your channel will be successful because you seem like a likeable and relatable guy. Your videos are simple yet thoughtful and strike a nice balance between length and substance. Good job man.

Since Nintendo released DKC 1, 2 & 3 for Nintendo online I replayed all games and currently Tropical Freeze for Switch and one thing I noticed that makes Tropical Freeze worse then DKC 2 for me is the bonus levels. If we get a third game for Switch I hope they change that.

IDK I don't feel the same when playing the new donkey Kong games versus the old ones. The old one seemed darker and almost more interesting to complete

Stickerbrush symphony sound sad in my opinion for some reason Also I like and enjoy more tropical freeze than any other

Everytime I replay dkc2 as soon as I hear the stickerbrush symphony my first thought is fuck this is going to suck.

Donkey Kong Country 3 is so underrated

My list : 5- Donkey Kong Country Returns 4- Tropical Freeze 3- DKC 1 2- DKC 3 1- DKC 2 (But you know, on some days DKC 3 is my favourite. Like, I like DKC2 as much as the next guy, but that game has so many boring levels in its second half. The ghost levels in particular.) (And a little wall of text incoming) I'm a huge DKC fan and I don't see the appeal with the new games. Especially returns where half the game is staying stationary and blowing on things. Like for real, DKC2 is hands down the most popular one, yet, the 2 returns games have a huge emphasis on DKC1 and Donkey himself, you know, the gorilla who's not even playable in the best game of its own franchise Also the modern games are so freaking tedious to complete. Levels are way too long, bosses have too many phases, there are way too many collectibles. If I have to find 9 puzzles pieces in a level that takes 8 minutes to complete on a casual run, that amounts to something that can take 30-60 minutes of boring gameplay. (Returns is the worst in this regard as I said, there's so much stuff hidden in places where you have to stop running and blow or smash to find them ... In a game where the main goal is to run to the right, wth ?) And finally, I really don't see how people can prefer DKC1 over 2 or 3. DKC1 has the jankiest hitboxes, the worst cases of enemies popping in your face, impossible to find hidden bonus and the worst bonus in the first trilogy. DKC3 is just solid all around, so gorgeous and it has a world map so fun to explore. I swear that if it had DK instead of Kiddie, people would be more found of it. Anyway, great list as always, hope minish cap is at the top of next one !

1.There are very few times where you have to blow stuff in returns. 2.Both games have very few levels with 9 puzzle pieces. The vast majority have 5 only, a small part 7. Plus, those puzzle pieces aren't required-they just unlock artwork. They're a way to encourage exploration on your first playthrought if you're into that, but afterwards, you're supposed to skip them and only bother with the kong letters. 3.I'd say the levels of the original were too short, and so were some of the levels in returns. But really, even in Tropical freeze, they are very few levels that you can't finish in under two minutes. 4.Some bosses have too many phases, yes, but they were at least more complex and varied than some of the nonsense in the old ones. The worst boss of any DKC, in my opinion, is this crocodile in world 3 of DKC2. Avoid the same lame attack a couple times, throw a barrel at him, repeat. 5.I agree that DKC1 is the worst in the OG trilogy.

They better not steal the crystal coconut. Here he comes banana slamma! Mirror mode on returns is fun. I still have to finish it. On the Wii I barely beat the mole on the forth world. Dkc3 you can have 103% 104% and 105% but dkc2 never had any incentive to do a harder mode. Lightning lookout with no barrels and star barrel vs animal antics. 😱 Hero mode was cool on the gba remake. Dkc2 you had to pay coins after the first save of each world. Gba you have to pay 10 coins to fight the boss.

I also agree dk2 deserves the 1 spot. It is the best improvement to the franchise. I remember as a kid the later levels really forced the adrenaline rush. They should make a game where the k roll and the Kremlin's gets revived
