I think the biggest factor to the difficulty of a course is the teacher you end up having. All of the AP’s listed in “drop out” were ones I took but was fortunate to have very good teachers for. The material isn’t easy per-say, but a good teacher will make it feel very doable!

That’s 100% true. People generally see APUSH as pretty hard but it was one of my easiest classes last year. Pretty much got all the info I needed in class and had barely any homework. Teacher made it ridiculously easy to do well on dbqs because he had a ridiculously formulaic approach to them. Like you knew the entire structure, sentence by sentence, before getting the prompt.

My current AP Calc AB teacher, according to my entire class (myself included,) doesn't explain the concepts any well. He also makes a LOT of mistakes despite having the answer sheet with him... but this isn't particularly what makes me upset. It's that whenever we ask anything about the steps or what did he did, we get hit with the "You learned this before so I won't explain."

On the flip side, some AP teachers are really good but unempathetic teachers. They are great at teaching but will ruthlessly throw unrealistic amount of assignments like you have no other classes to focus on. I had two of these ppl. I think they do this to make sure they get their students get good scores but some of it definitely should have been extra credit or something- wayyyy too much.

I also had a somewhat tough AP English Language and Composition teacher in 12th grade. For starters, I had to read 25 to 30 pages at home on average a day (which took me 30 to 35 minutes a day[I try to read carefully]). In addition, I had to doing reading plus reading comprehension, writing or vocabulary homework (some of the esoteric 12th grade vocabulary words I learned in that class were: deleterious, esurient, surreptitious, colloquial, conflagration, sybarite, venerable, idiosyncrasy, panacea, penurious, etc.). In other words, I spent nearly an hour on AP Language and Composition class at home nearly everyday. Furthermore, for essays, he was strict on formatting (usually he wanted either MLA or APA or Chicago formatting), page count (first essay was 4-5 pages and the final essay/research paper was 7-8 pages), sources for research papers (he does not want us to use Wikipedia or any source similar to Wikipedia or use any kind of corporate news media as sources), and submission time (if you were late to class and handed your essay to the teacher, he is going to mark 10 percentage points off your essay and this was the first offense). Second offense, he will not accept the essay and you get a zero. Third offense, and you fail the class. Plus, for 4-6 page essays, he gave us 2-3 days to write. For 7-8 page essays, he gave us 4-5 days to write. I learned a lot from my English Language and Composition teacher's class and it did prepare me for college.

Also, at my high school and if you were in 12th grade for English you had three options for English: 1. the regular 12th grade English. 2. AP Language and Composition which I went with (11th graders can also take that class too). 3. AP Literature and Composition which was the hardest option (I would not recommend this option unless if you really are good at English and enjoy English. Also, the English Department strongly recommended students pass AP Language and Composition before taking this class.) That said, AP Language and Composition class did prepare me for college level English.

As a lit student I’m feeling this hard with exam day approaching. I was expecting the class to be like 40% nonfiction and 60% fiction and mostly based around how to dissect and construct stories along with general improvements on your ability to write. Instead it’s mostly been some short stories with a lot of poems mixed in, almost all of which have been fiction, the only one which wasn’t being a poem I was allowed to choose for an essay. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading and I got a 5 on the language exam but the shear volume of anachronistic stories and specifically poems is ridiculous. The poems specifically tend to be very subjective in their meaning and tone and it can often lead to really conflicting opinions on a text, and if your option doesn’t align with a test maker’s you’re screwed. The best example of this I can think of is the poem I chose for one of my essays, “the Foggy Dew”, by Charles O’Neill. “The Foggy Dew” can and has been interpreted to have two VERY different meanings over its one hundred year existence, as either an incredibly solemn poem focusing on the loss of a failed rebellion, or as a hyped up nationalist call to arms to rebel against colonial rule. Both interpretations are correct but only one can effectively be put on a testing sheet and so if you choose one your wrong on the other. I’ve seen this for plenty of poems in the class thus far and I honestly view it as somewhat stupid especially since many of these poems are from a time before we had standardized writing and so the older forms of English and writing needlessly complicate things on top of the already difficult material. I spoke to one of my former AP teachers, who also happens to teach 12th grade English, and she wasn’t surprised at the volume of older works but openly voiced he discontent at it alongside mine. It’s not a good way to get kids interested in the subject and it actively turns them away and I can say from personal experience that I haven’t gained much as a writer from this class that I didn’t already learn through independent reading or through AP English language which did a much better job at what AP Lit fails to do. The class is far to archaic and that makes it needlessly difficult in what should be a relatively easy subject. Kids wouldn’t have a problem taking an AP course like this if they could analyze modern rap songs, movies, and TV shows. Writing has evolved since the days of Shakespeare and we don’t need to rely on stage plays and poems to teach kids when they’re already 400 years ahead of it.

I chose AP Macro over AP World this year for my social studies class- partly because everyone in my school was freaking out about how hard World is, but also because I knew I needed some sort of economics course and I love geography (not history; there's a difference) and math. Turns out that MacroEcon is a hard class and my grades are lower for me (Gifted Kid™️) but it's rewarding at the end and I enjoy the content so far. As a side note- AP Stats is a breeze for me.

It’s definitely one of the “upper level” AP classes. It’s hard even for those with a music background because most high schoolers are not that conscious of their ear. (Which is a way of saying most people can’t really hear stuff they think of and then get that out into physical space) I took it senior year and got a 5 but only because I took college theory and jazz harmony at the same time and even before. That’s kinda the hard part, the average high school musician regardless of skill on their instrument will still probably fail The majority of non-musicians will fail. It’s an incredibly unfair course but it’s a great class for those who want to go into music as a major and have a better than most grasp.

Anyways he taught both preAP and AP Chem and most people hated him, but after a while you could tell he really cared. He said if you can pass my class you’ll pass everything that comes your way. Hell even some of the people who failed his class went onto do better later. He said I want you all to focus on learning more than a grade. Albeit he had a policy of in the preAP chem class if you got below a 80% then he wanted a conference with your parents. He did that on every exam. A lot hated that of course cause it’s embarrassing, but he really wanted to help us. He even said I could care less if my students dislike me if I can get them to be successful then that makes it all worth it. I can’t thank him enough I still keep in touch with him due to grad school and he always asks how well I’m doing. Also his personality is kind of like a toned down Rick Sanchez so outside of school he was cool to talk to.

It's like a math and a history class built into one. These "procedures" can be thought of like math theorems, and there are a LOT of them. You need to be able to memorize them and apply them as you see fit. On top of these procedures, you need to make the music fit with the time signature, the key signature, follow proper chord progression guidelines, invert/change the standard arrangement of chords, etc. etc. These things are also taught in the class, but you're expected to have prior knowledge about some of them. The exam consists of general questions, music-writings, audio excerpts which you have to answer questions based on, like what kinds of procedures were used and whatnot, and there is even a "sight-singing" section where you are given a sheet of written music and you have to sing it right then and there, without an instrument. I only took one AP class, and it was AP music theory. One thing that we had to do was to learn all the different intervals (ascending and descending) by ear, and we were tested on it. So, they’d play two notes, one after the other, and you’d have to know what the gap was between the two notes. I would spend so much time in the computer lap using the Aurelia program (this was in 2006-2007) just listening and practicing over and over that listening skill. We also had to write 4-part music with the correct chord progressions with NO PARALLEL FIFTHS. And we had to be able to sight read and sing for the AP exam, which wasn’t a big deal for me since I have a choir background, but people in my class who were in band or orchestra were less confident about it. It was hard, but I learned so much about music.

I was made to write a full annotated bibliography in 2 days (10 very long paragraphs that needed a lot of research) and for our mock presentations, we were usually given like a week to work on our presentation and essay simultaneously. Seminar is absolutely in no way easy, it gave me an unbelievable amount of stress. I took bio and world the same year and they were nothing compared to seminar, especially bio was a piece of cake.

We could choose the prompt, and we had a group of 2-4 people to work with. We had to find like 10 sources to use for it, and after we wrote the essay, we had to make a presentation for it using all of the information we gathered for the essay. Then we have another essay with sources given to us by College Board. Overall it feels very easy, but it might just be the teacher for my class.

Took German in high school all four years and AP in my senior year. I had a really great teacher and I had a pretty solid grasp of the language at that point so it was mostly easy for me. The most difficult part is sticking with it and applying yourself. Not everyone was able to pick it up as easily as I was however… In German 3 I knew students who always struggled. One dude I knew was a nice guy but for his sanity, I hoped that he wouldn’t try for another year. His lack of progress would have made German AP increasingly more difficult unless he studied twice as hard as everyone else *at least.* My best piece of advice for learning any language is, “Nothing will stop you being creative more effectively as the fear of making a mistake.” -John Cleese. The students who were least afraid to make mistakes often did the best. And boy was my guy afraid to make mistakes.

AP music theory is really one of the only APs on this list that just basically rely on how knowledgeable and familiar you are with music to determine if you do well. like someone with 8 years experience on piano and violin as well as being an established vocalist is going to have an easier time than joe the guitar player who thought it would be an easy class.

  • @Angel-mf6rs

As someone who is a sophomore as of this comment and took the new AP Precalc, I would rank it as hard because it is essentially honors class but they expect you to not only find what values xyz is, but they require you to manipulate or envision problems that can look very complicated. It is mostly preparation for AP calculus BC because the content has complex approaches and if done well, this class can prepare you for Calculus BC for what it will throw at you. For me, it has been easy for the most part since the content from semester 1 and parts of semester 2 is going well but the things we’re learning now is complicated and will demand equations to be made to know how to approach these problems. And considering others, it takes a lot to solve these problems so while I like math, overall it can be difficult if you don’t pay attention. I have not taken the AP exam yet but from what I know, we will not be able to have a reference sheet to know equations so we do have to study and remember them.

I’m one of those people who never had a honor or ap class before and it was a very different experience. If I’m being honest the only information that’s stuck in my head was from hiemler but I watched his videos literally 3 days before the exam.If I had more practice and different teaching method I think I would’ve done better from what I did.Ngl I probably got like a 2 or 3 on that exam Atleast I get an A in the class👍🏾

If you can write decently well, can comprehend most parts of short stories and poems, and have taken AP Lang, Lit really is not that bad. You just need to read two or three books that are very easy to write about.

Also, being someone that is taking AP Art (Drawing) this year, it’s not simply drawing. It’s being able to investigate some sort of theme through art all with a relatively competent and personalized style. It makes it more difficult but you definitely learn a lot. I sucked at portraits so I made my portfolio surround them and it has lead to major improvements in such.

I say AP Chemistry should be in the Send Prayers list or in the drop out list. If anyone have good math skills and did well on high school chemistry, it would be send prayers for those people. If not, then definitely drop out from this class and take General Chemistry in college. I would also put AP Biology in the Send Prayers or in the drop out list. If you did well in high school biology and high school chemistry, I would send prayers for you. If not, then drop out or do not take the equivalent of this class until college. I had a friend who said his first semester of college biology was the equivalent of AP Biology in one year.

Lol. Since it’s relatively new they MASSIVELY changed the grading from year to year. The year before I took it, 75% of our class of 35 people got 5s. My year, only 3 people got a 5, and most were 3s. That being said, the Capstone Diploma is idiotic and neither class taught me a thing

AP statistics was probably the easiest math class I took. Super easy to understand it was just the homework that killed me. Everyday i would have to do 12 questions and each question had an a, b and c section. It would end up filling up like 4 notebook pages front and back. Also took both AP lit and AP Lang and gotta say it really wasn't too hard. I think our teachers really helped us out with it tho and made us understand everything. All of my essays for these classes would come out minimum at a 85%. But for our mock essays for the AP exam I would get like a 2 or 3😭. Would not recommend AP lang/lit but would definitely recommend AP statistics.

As someone who has taken APES. It was WAY harder to pass than AP research but I’d honestly say it depends on the school. For APES, my school gave out 20 page study guides due by the end of the week along with detailed problems from the real world that you would have to solve. Not the easiest class and I wouldn’t recommend it to people who aren’t interested in that field.

Took Seminar, apparently my teacher was a former college professor who did things “a bit differently” I had to spend the whole year struggling due to the strict curriculum in that class. I slept an average of 3 hours while taking that class and I actually celebrated after the AP exam cause I never had to be bothered by it again.
