My mom & I saw "Kingdom" today & we loved it! My mom thought it was excellent & it reminded us of the original "Apes" & it had callbacks & Easter Eggs to all of the previous "Apes" films & TV shows. The visuals & CGI was amazing, the storyline was great. This is worthy of an Academy Award. "Rise", "Dawn" & "War" were excellent, but "Kingdom" takes things to a whole new level & I can't wait to see where they go next. What about you?

I would go as far to say it's one of the best trilogies of all time. A lot trilogies have a really weak link like Terminator, Alien (although Alien 3 is not nearly as bad as people make out), The Godfather, the original George A Romeros dead trilogy (but again Day of the Dead isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be) ETC. But the new Apes trilogy genuinely has 3 exceptional movies all with 3 different antagonists which helps keep it fresh. As an actual trilogy I think you'd be hard pressed to find many better ones.

Here's mine: 1. Planet of the Apes (1968) - a compelling story with some incisive social commentary. And the twist is not only a good shock, but a great character moment for Taylor as well. 2. War - emotionally devastating, engrossing conclusion to the trilogy. 3. Dawn - just a plain great movie 4. Conquest - I have a lot of love for the original series, and this one in particular is a lot of fun. Seek out the blu-ray, which reinstates the cut violence and the original, darker ending. 5. Kingdom - really enjoyed this one, I just wish we got a little more time with Proximus and Raka. It could go up a slot on rewatch. 6. Escape - I too love the light-hearted nature of this one, and the bleak as fuck tone shift that occurs in the second half. That ending was legitimately shocking when I was a kid. 7. Rise - it's a damn good film, but there are a few sizeable logic issues with it that bring it down for me, like the entire lab somehow missing that one of their chimps was pregnant and gave birth in its cell. Also Brian Cox is completely wasted. 8. Beneath - I really like the new stuff this one adds, and the ending is an all time "holy shit" moment for me. But they really should have come up with a more graceful way of dealing with Heston's disinterest in doing a sequel. 9. Battle - on paper this one has a lot going for it, but the execution is pretty lackluster. 10. Planet of the Apes (2001) - just kind of a lame, generic blockbuster with good makeup effects.

Gentlemen one thing that is criminally underappreciated is the connection between Battle for Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes. There is a deleted scene at the end of Battle where we see the underground mutants have been hiding a nuclear bomb all along and the mutant 2nd command, Martinez, says they will reserve and worship the bomb for generations. One top of that the leader of the cult in Beneath is also named Martinez so you can even see the canon in the names of the characters. I'm guessing he's Martinez the 20th or something lol. Eventually being around the bomb is what causes the mutants to grow telepathic powers and create illusions. The creepiest thing of all at the end of Battle when the kids and the apes are playing together you can see a subtle but dreadful tear of blood dripping down the statute of the Law Giver, which is a call back to the tricks the future mutants played in Beneath. The mutants are already beginning to impose their will before the final credits... It was like a faint but profound omen that even though in the moment the ape and human children are at peace the time line is inevitable that man and ape are destined to clash and causality determines the world is to burn. If they had included that scene in Battle to me it would have gone from 6 to like 8 lol Awesome Revenge of the Sith kind of Lore!

The statue at the end of Battle was of Caesar, *not* The Lawgiver(in those prolog & epilog scenes, The Lawgiver is the character portrayed by John Huston, speaking to the gathered children). And it wasn't blood, it was just a tear. Signifying the spirit of Caesar weeping. In joy or sadness, only the dead know.

I rank them as follows... 1.) Dawn 2.) War 3a.) Rise 3b.) Kingdom 4.) Original 5-9.) Beneath/Escape/Conquest/Battle (I just never really liked any of them at all) 10.) 2001 I really liked Kingdom even though it was slow at times, but I absolutely LOVE the idea of Caesar's teachings being bent for someone's personal ideology. It's the sort of thing that we see going on in the present day on a near constant basis. Apes and humans aren't so different after all. It was hard to pick Rise over Kingdom or vice versa so I pretty much have them the same. The only *slight* bump to Rise is that there's a bit more emotion in that movie. War was really damn good as well, but I honestly don't think anyone can put anything other than Dawn up there. Maybe I can understand purists putting the original. I get it. But my goodness Dawn is just one of those incredible movies that comes around every so often. Oh, and of course I put the Tim Burton one last because that movie was absolute garbage and I remember seeing it in theaters and I just couldn't stand it. That Helena Bonham Carter ape just weirded me the hell out. Terrible movie.

I believe that in the Burton version, Wahlberg went through a 2ND time warp at the end, what you may not know was that in the original novel it ended in the modern day, ironically, I thought that the ending was BETTER than the rest of the film, it was also a hint about the beginning of the Apes taking over as Thade was a liberator of enslaved Apes, in some parallel World.

I think it is a true masterpiece and I would actually say that I always compare DAWN to EMPIRE STRIKES BACK as they were both astounding films that were set as sequels in massively amazing sci-fi trilogies. Another terrific video, Cody!

Personally, War's darkness is why I think it's the best one. Dawn is obviously a great blockbuster, but at the end of the day, it still feels like a blockbuster. The finale is our hero ape facing down evil villain ape on top of an exploding building. War, meanwhile, felt so mature for a blockbuster. The finale of that movie is a bit more tragic and touching in my opinion. But at the same time, Dawn is the more digestible film, plus War had misleading and terrible marketing.

You lost me with the negative review of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, this movie was a classic pivotal king pin in the whole line of Ape Movies...

I recently went back through the latest trilogy with my dad, we planned to watch one each night but ended up having a double bill with the first two then revisited War a few nights later. Save for The Lord of the Rings it's easily my favourite film trilogy just for how consistent it is. Plenty of other trilogies to me drop the ball usually for me in the third instalment but what they did with managing to build their own story whilst paying tribute to what came before without using it as a crutch was just amazing, it's the gold standard for reboots of beloved film franchises.

I ❤ planet of the apes! Even the bad ones have a certain charm to them you don’t see often. The world building and themes have always been so fascinating to me

I plan on watching the sequels from the 70s since they are on Hulu. But I’ve seen the original, the remake and the newest films from the last decade along side Kingdom. Here’s how I’d rank them 1. Dawn 5 out of 5 2. War 4.5 out of 5 3. Kingdom 4.5 out of 5 4. Rise 4 out of 5 5. Planet of the Apes (1968) 4 out of 5 6. Planet of the Apes (2001) 3 out of 5 The Tim Burton film is pretty empty, however he and his team swung for the fences to do their own thing….and it’s a big miss. But for me it’s a fun miss that I respect. I think once I watch the films from the 70s I’ll feel differently, but so far my nostalgia bias has me enjoying that remake despite it being at the bottom of my list of the 6. Also the remake has General Thade played by Tim Roth whose makeup is terrifying and convincing. His performance is the strongest of all the apes and he seems to cherish what he’s doing. He’s an underrated villain in my mind.

In POA 2001 I always felt that dropping a plot point into the first act about how that portal can combine life forms, DNA or something else that resulted in when Mark Whalberg went thru the portal at the end of the film and he now looks like an ape might have been a better ending than what they did. It still would not have been that good but better than what they did.

Do you think the new prequel series will tie in all the original movies into them or just the original ? Like do you think the prequels will slowly start introducing mutants, time travel ect or just stick with the original and forget the rest ?
