    A Feast For Crows is a hard read the first time because so many new characters are introduced and so many of our favorite characters do not appear. It’s better on a second read.

    I loved all the books first time through, though for my reread, I did a combined reading of Feast and Dance. It's pretty popular in the fandom to read Feast and Dance simultaneously, switching back and forth, which means you get all the characters' stories pretty much chronologically (the chapter guide I followed is called the Boiled Leather order, which I can link if you're curious.) It was a revelation. It emphasized how after A Storm of Swords, what was already an epic story had its scope increased by an order of magnitude: suddenly there is intrigue across the entire globe. The combined reading also made some stories feel more connected: instead of Tyrion being separated from Cersei and Jaime by hundreds of pages, all three of their reactions to Tywin's death are in quick succession, so its clearer to see how their relationships have been broken by the event. It also makes it more clear that a major theme of this section of the series is how to rule responsibly. Jon, Dany, Cersei, and Doran are all trying to maintain control of precarious political positions, and we get to compare how they succeed or fail (mostly fail...) I'd say the other theme is trying to find ones purpose and identity (Jaime, Tyrion, Brienne, Arya, Sansa, Sam fit into this.) My ranking would be 1/2. Feast+Dance (leaning Dance if I had to choose) 3. A Game of Thrones (I love seeing the Starks interact with each other, its so heartwarming) 4. A Storm of Swords 5. A Clash of Kings While you wait for The Winds of Winter, you could also check out the ancillary Asoiaf books. I think they're all worthwhile. They are: 1. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" (also known as "Dunk and Egg") - This is 3 short stories set 150 years before AGOT about Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon Targaryen. They're a little lighter in tone than the main series, but they directly tie in with it. Characters from these stories are referenced by or appear in Feast and Dance, and many (pretty convincing) fan theories about where the series is headed rely on historical info presented within. If you want to know what Bloodraven was like before he was a tree man, give this a read (The answer may shock you!) I would rank this book as Essential because of how much it is referenced in the main series and because it's a good short read. 2. "Fire and Blood" - This book presents the history of the Targaryens from Aegon's Conquest of Westeros (300 years ago) to about 150 years before AGOT (so there's no overlap with "Dunk and Egg".) It's a hefty read, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It gets talked about as a Westerosi history book, which sounds pretty boring, but it's actually super exciting. My pitch is this: Imagine all the political intrigue, weird sorcery, and battles that happen in the main series were condensed down to 20ish pages. It's that density of wild events for 700+ pages; it feels like a drug (GRRM juice or something...) I'd say the one drawback is that there are a lot of Targaryen names that get impossible to keep straight after a while; I had to keep the family tree next to me while reading so I could remember all the connections. The HBO spinoff series that's in production is based on the middle section of this book (The Dance of Dragons,) which seems like it would take an astronomical budget to do justice, but we'll see. I would rank this book as Highly Recommended because I loved reading it, though I don't think its a guarantee that every Asoiaf fan will like the hyper condensed history style. One aspect that is pretty cool is that the history presented in this book (published 2018) is referenced as far back as AGOT (published 1996.) Hats off to George for keeping it consistent! 3. "The World of Ice and Fire" - This is an illustrated coffee-table-esque book that has sections about all the different cultures in the world and their histories. The first third is about Westeros before Aegon conquered it, the middle third is a summary of the history of the Targaryens, and the last third is about all the other cultures, like those in Essos and many that were only obliquely referenced in the series (Yi Ti and Asshai, among others.) If you didn't want to read "Fire and Blood", the middle third of this book is literally a summary of it. George got carried away writing, and it no longer made sense to put the full material in a coffee table book. However, I loved reading "Fire and Blood" so I would recommend reading that instead of a less engaging summary. I would rank this book as Cool For Fans because the illustrations are well done and there is new info here that can provoke the imagination. If you want to keep up with all the different fan theories, many of the more recent ones took the snippets about new cultures and ran with them in wild but compelling directions. You could instead just look up youtube vids about the new info in this book if you didn't want to buy it. Sorry for the long post, hopefully someone actually sees it and finds it interesting!

    Thank you for the recommendations! I actually appreciated the long comment and it has given me a good place to start with the companion books. I actually may begin with Fire and Blood simply because the history book format sounds so appealing, but I’m still not sure yet!

  • @keith-c

    @keith-c

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kaylachristenson9664 If it sounds appealing, then I'd say go for it! It's my favorite of the three. I was apprehensive about the format but it works so well. I ended up reading Fire and Blood first, then Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, then World of Ice and Fire. I think the new HBO show will start next year so if you're interested you should probably read Fire and Blood before then. The part they're adapting is some of the most dramatic stuff that happens in any of the books, so I'm excited to see what they do with it. You should definitely read A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms before The Winds of Winter, but that would be 2023 if we're lucky... who knows when if we're not. Something I wished I had done while reading Fire and Blood would have been to print out the family tree and as each family member's story was told, write a few words or one sentence about them on the tree so that I could refer to it later on to jog my memory about who's who. It was easy to keep straight in my head for the first couple generations, but as the children multiplied towards the middle of the book, it got really difficult

    Yeah, I definitely also thought that ”A Feast for Crows” was the most boring and hardest to get through. I think it’s because ”A Storm of Swords” is so enormously, massively entertaining and compact with action and then you have the sky-high expectations of that while you’re reading what comes next in ”A Feast for Crows”. ...And then it’s just suddenly these random chapters after chapters about the Iron Islands (and Dorne too, according to me) where nothing happens. But yeah, it’s a slow steady build-up for the action in ”Winds”...

    I wonder if the 5 or 6 year wait for Feast added to the books disappointment when it came out, I binged through the book series with the knowledge that everyone's least favourite was Feast so I wasn't expecting much, and then I read Feast and thought it was a masterpiece, a much more sombre and reflective look at war and it's outlook and consequences whilst adding so much more to the world, it isn't as big or eventful as Storms but its the best written book in my opinion, funnily enough tho Dance is my least favourite because it does feel like a huge set up for Winds that can drag at times, a fantastic book still, but I do feel like we will begin to see more Feast appreciation in the coming years.

Loved the first book but then got back into the tv series and the way it ended put me off so much that I figured I wouldn’t go back to the books despite loving the first one. Now that so much time has passed I think I’m going to try again. But maybe I’ll start with the one you like the most. It probably won’t matter the order I go in...since I’ve seen the whole series and know the gist of it. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Margery was one of my top three favorite characters so it will be fun to learn more about her.

    It's so interesting stumbling on your channel because on my first read through of this series I had absolutely ranked my list the same way you did. However, on my 2nd read through of the series I actually appreciated "A Feast for Crows" so much more and personally appreciated the setup of the Iron Islands (especially Victorian and Euron Greyjoy's characters) and Dorne's importance in its play for the Game of Thrones. Personally my favorite storylines are Jamie & Brienne's relationship, Reek/Theon and Ramsey's relationship(yikes), and Jon & Dany's buildups with their respective stories(Ice and Fire). The Dance with Dragon's novel moved up to my number one specifically because of how exciting the buildup is for literally every single plot point. It is setting up The Winds of Winter to be quite possibly the best novel ever(assuming it gets finished). Anyway, happy reading!

    I really liked Clash & Storm. Thrones was a great book to begin the saga but obviously the best bits are later in the story. I found that Feast grew on me, I just found the saga with Sam stuck in Braavos a bit tiresome, but even that leads to a cool plot point by the end. I'd say Dance is better than Feast but it definitely seemed like he let the story go a bit crazy and I reckon it's made the next book such a mammoth task he'd rather concentrate most of his efforts on some other aspect of his ASOIAF world-building

There’s a line at the end of Arya’s chapter right after the red wedding that goes “The axe took her in the back of the head.” I’m sure I would have thrown my book across the room if I haven’t seen the show first, probably one of my favorite chapters in the series!

    5. A Dance with Dragons 4. A Clash of Kings 3. A Game of Thrones 2. A Storm of Swords 1. A Feast for Crows A Dance with Dragons is really great at times, but it diddles around for like 800 pages, and the Daenerys chapters are just a mess. Also the fact that it's all setup and no payoff is a little hard for me to swallow. A Clash of Kings is great, but to me the ending is what really makes it exceptional. All of the intrigue and slow pace inbetween can be a little tough to get through, especially on a second read. Arya is a major highlight though. A Game of Thrones gets third because of how utterly impressive GRRM is in his worldbuilding and taking all these seemingly unexceptional characters and making them fantastic characters without them necessarily having arcs. Just a masterclass in fantasy writing all around. A Storm of Swords... I mean what is there to say. This book does it all. Love it. The payoffs couldn't be better written and better delivered. A Feast for Crows is the only book in the series I've spent a whole 24 hours straight reading. Why? Because it touches on the lesser known aspects of the story. I just love it. We meet so many characters, there are so many mysteries being fleshed out, the lore is expanded, Jaime and Cersei as POV's are incredible, we get a much more intimate relationship to a lot of lesser characters and I'm all for it. More authors should learn from this. To me that's what makes FFC the best out of all of em. I do see why someone wouldn't like it tho but the worldbuild, the intimacy, the dialogue, the mysteries... it's just the best, hands down.

    Yes! Love these thoughts. Agreed that Storm of Swords is just so much pay off. A Game of Thrones really is beautiful world-building as wel. I hadn’t really thought of Feast in that way, but it’s a good point that it highlights some of the aspects that are paid attention to less. It was so so dark to read though, but I do think as time passes I’m finding more appreciation for it.
