RAVI AND RANJANA CASE: I spent this morning trying to know more about the suicide case of Ravi Ruwali. It has been a few days people have been sharing Ranjana’s (wife) photos on social media saying things like “she forced her husband to commit suicide”, “a monster”, “she should be punished”. But I didn’t know what had happened. Today I got curious and watched interviews and read a few articles all morning. Here is what I learnt about the case: Ranjana was liked by Ravi’s parents upon seeing her at a wedding. They talked to her family and their marriage got arranged. Apparently they had been looking for a girl who was going to Australia so that their son Ravi could go to Australia as well (Ranjana was waiting for her Australian visa). They got married. Ranjana got her visa and left for Australia. She was supported by her in-laws. They sent her money towards her Australian degree (as in-laws in Nepal are expected to). In many occasions, her father-in-law told her “my son is useless, you are our only hope. We hope he gets to go to Australia so he can change his ways” (There are screenshots of their messages exchange of this)- 1. RAVI’S FAMILY BELIEVED THAT HE WAS USELESS AND HE KNEW OF THIS. RANJANA HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF USING HER IN-LAWS TO FINANCE HER STUDY IN AUSTRALIA. Ranjana applied for her husband’s Australian visa. During this time, he fled to India for 7 months without telling ANYONE. She had no idea of his whereabouts and neither did his family. When he returned back to Nepal, he called Ranjana and notified her that his visa application was declined. She only learned then that he’d had 5 police cases on him in the past for getting into fights, which is why his visa was rejected- 2. HE WAS A TROUBLED MAN. Following that, he called Ranjana one day and said “I got married to you so that I could go to Australia. Now that my visa has been declined, there is no point of us being together”. She told her father-in-law all of this and he said “My son is useless, you are our hope. Don’t talk to him if it is affecting your studies”. Even after all that, Ranjana applied for his visa once more, which got rejected again. During this time, her husband kept blocking her on social media. If he had a message to convey, he would unblock her, message her and block her again-3. HE WAS IMMATURE. She went to Nepal for a wedding. He picked her up with his sister-in-law Asmita, and they went to Hetauda-her parents’ home, because she needed to be there for the wedding- 4. Asmita has now come out and said “they were not on good terms, they weren’t talking to each other properly” for a case against Ranjana) Ravi took some medication and attempted suicide. Ranjana had gone out of the house to get some stuff. Ravi had been taken to the hospital after being found on the floor alive. She got to the hospital and signed all required paperwork and admitted him in the ICU. She stayed at the hospital until he died-5. ASMITA CLAIMS THAT RANJANA DIDN’T CRY AFTER HE DIED. Ravi’s father showed up to the hospital the next morning, after his son’s death, after having filed a case againt Ranjana for manslaughter. Ranjana was taken to jail and is now out on bail. She is waiting for her trial. According to Asmita’s interview, Ranjana left the house that morning because she knew what was going to happen next. She implied that the pair had gotten into a fight/argument before she left the house. Now I’m going to talk about the points I made above. 1. WOMEN ARE NOT REHABILITATION CENTERS FOR DAMAGED MEN. Do not bring other people’s happy daughters home to “fix” your “useless” sons. His parents believed that he was useless and kept drumming it into his head. He could have killed himself over the frustration of believing he wasn’t good enough. Also, in Nepal, when you bring a girl home as your daughter-in-law who is studying or wanting to study, you take on the responsibility towards her study, hence she didn’t “use” her in-laws. Her in-laws also believed that she was their only hope for the future- it was mentioned by them many times. They told her to concentrate on her studies and not to worry about money. 2. SHE WAS NEWLY MARRIED. I cannot stress this enough. She was newly married and her husband fled without telling her, or ANYONE. Imagine the pain and disappointment she felt, not knowing where her husband was for 7 months. She also found out that he had 5 police cases on him in the past for getting into fights. This proves that he was a troubled guy. 3. AGAIN, SHE WAS NEWLY MARRIED. When her husband told her he married her just to go to Australia, I can only imagine how it might have diminished her worth. MARRIAGE ISN’T A BUSINESS DEAL. It is not a joke. He was an immature man who didn’t know how to communicate and blocked his young wife off social media repeatedly. 4. OF COURSE THEY WERE NOT ON GOOD TERMS, YOU SILLY WOMAN. Her husband had fled off for months without telling her. He would tell her that their marriage was just based on the fact that she was going to take him to Australia. He used to cut off communication with her and block her. SHE HAD NO OBLIGATION TO TALK TO HIM PROPERLY AND LOVINGLY. There are fights in every marriage. Married people fight over dirty dishes. This was a lot more serious. Her being disappointed and not talking to him is 100% fair and understandable. She does not owe any of us an explanation to why she was upset with him. 5. PEOPLE DEAL WITH TRAUMA AND GRIEF DIFFERENTLY. Some people cry, some people don’t. The amount of tears does not indicate the degree of pain. Asmita’s accusation on this matter is pointless and uneducated. Maybe they did have an argument before Ranjana left the house and Ravi attempted suicide. BUT WHY IS THAT USED TO SEND RANJANA TO PRISON? So what if they did? He had given her a thousand reasons to. While he was in the hospital, Ranjana fulfilled her responsibility as a wife by admitting him to the ICU. She stayed at the hospital until he passed away. WHY WAS RAVI’S FATHER FILING A CASE AGAINT RANJANA INSTEAD OF BEING AT THE HOSPITAL NEXT TO HIS DYING SON? What was more important? With all due respect to the deceased and his family, I think this is just a case of parents being unable to deal with the demise of their child and trying to guilt another person believing that putting the blame on someone else will make it a little less painful. Maybe they blamed themselves for always criticizing their son, and maybe they needed to blame someone else to overcome that guilt. Ravi killed himself because he wanted to die. She didn’t shove the drug up his throat. I am so sick of patriarchy in Nepal. Why are women always blamed for men’s irresponsible and immature actions? Why are women always wronged? They are not heard. Nepalese people are sheep. They believe what they hear and do not try to dig into the situation to find out the truth. Why isn’t anyone talking about how immature Ravi was? About how he had multiple police cases on him which indicates of his somewhat violent and unreasonable nature. About how he emotionally tortured his newly wed wife. When a girl gets married, she has so much hope, so many dreams. Ranjana’s dreams were crushed. And now she has to face hatred from the whole country. My heart goes out to her and her family. Ranjana’s husband and her family have robbed her of dreams and future. My heart truly goes out to her.
