Range Vlog

Date: 23 May 2018
Location: West End Gun Club Shooting Facility (Meyers Canyon, CA)
A gloomy morning of testing. Trying out Alliant Reloder 16 (RL16) for the very first time in 6mm Creedmoor. Also using a Magnetospeed for the first time, and on the Masterpiece Arms (MPA) Magnetospeed mount.

For velocity at the muzzle I'd trust the Magnetospeed more. Here's why. It takes a few yards before the Labradar will pick up the bullet and begin tracking it. The Maneto is measuring the ACTUAL speed at the muzzle, where as the Labradar "calculates" the muzzle velocity back on the distance and speed it first picks up the bullet. It could be 6 to 10 yards away from the muzzle before it picks it up and begins the measurements. You can see the distance it begins tracking each shot by pulling the data from the radar to see when the first tracking distance was recorded. You'd need to extract the data to your laptop and open Excel.

I've ran my MagnetoSpeed V3 twice now and love it. No errors and ran from a can as well. I do wish it would tighten up a little different but didn't have it move on me any so.

I found that if the magneto speed is not perfectly parallel with the bore it gives you high or low readings.

Next time shoot a couple of shots to make sure both chronos are working first before you start If MagnetoSpeed is not working check two things; is it at correct elevation to bore, then sensitivity I have made a homemade steel bar that connects to the forend using M-Lock screws and then installed the MagnetoSpeed to the end. Works 100% and eliminates any potential for barrel interference due to vibrations. By the way the MagnetoSpeed will note higher fps because it reads the speed of the bullet much sooner than the LabRadar.

Another great video there Jonathan. It looks like there is to much of a gap between the bore and the magnetospeed. There is a aluminium square rod tucked into the foam on the inside of the top. Use it to set the gap between the bore and the magnetospeed. There should be about a 1/4 inch gap between the two.

Yes, that's what I used to check the gap. But I am running without any spacers, so the only thing I can do is bend the MPA Magnetospeed stem to close the gap.

The V3 records both ES and SD and shows both when you print but displays only one on the screen which you can select

With that mount work with any chassis with a spigot mount cut out? Do you know if I can use the magnetospeed sporter with it? You make great content btw! And I love my 6 Creed!

It will work with any Arca Swiss or Picatinny rail. As far as Sporter, Wiser Precision sells one for the Sporter.

How far out from the muzzle is the labradar picking up the velocity? Looking at the manual it appears that it could be picking up velocities 20ft from the muzzle. That would account for the consistent slower readings, since the magntospeed is picking up velocity at the muzzle. Those 4000+ anomalies are a bit strange though. Did they change once you turned down the sensitivity? Maybe its picking up unburned powder?

I exaggerated/miscalculated the difference when I said "20 fps" initially. That was more like 14fps, and later on, it is consistently a 10 - 12 fps difference between the Labradar and Magnetospeed. You are correct regarding the V0 reading of the Labradar being measured at the 20ft point. So this would account for the slower muzzle velocity reading of the Labradar and Magnetospeed. Yes, the 4000+ fps anomalies stopped after I dropped the sensitivity.

I just picked up a Oehler 35P for a screaming deal, although I wouldn't mind supplementing it with a magnetospeed.

@@ocabj You spent time setting up the Labradar and just wired up the MagnetoSpeed unit without even knowing where the sensitivity was set. You discovered that it was on the lowest sensitivity and when that caused errors you simply moved to the highest sensitivity and you were surprised that there were new problems. There is a reason they did not give you a two position switch for the sensitivity. To me, everything about this comparison was rigged for the MagnetoSpeed to fail. Even your attitude in your comments reflected that bias. I will limit my comments to what I already said.

@@George-nt8uw It is 2020. I still have the Magnetospeed and Labradar. I use the Magnetospeed quite a bit without issue. I've recommended the Magnetospeed over the Labradar to some people given the intended use. I'll limit my response to what I've already said. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

really interesting. I would be more inclined to believe the magnetospeed simply because it has no other choice but to measure absolute barrel velocity. This is not to suggest that it cannot be incorrect but rather, in comparison, the lab radar is measuring at a different projectile absolute distance. What you must realize is that, the UK police use these things to substantiate prosecutions against airgun velocities. I'm assuming that UK police have a firm legal position against the prosecution of air firearms. This is not so much that the lab radar is more accurate but, that the magnetospeed is more accurate at it's designated distance from the muzzle. Kind regards............rotas australis.
