Range Rover L322 3.6 TDV8 - Fixing a Leaking A/C Condenser
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Since I am in the Range Rover for the time being I thought it might be nice to investigate & fix the A/C system. This was broken when I bought it, but never got around to looking at it... until now

I always look forward to seeing your videos and the jobs you take on with the limited resources you have. Your very brave to do these things on your front drive. I hope you are doing alright! Regards - Salv
Learning all the tips and tricks for when I get my L322 soon 😁 Might be a S/c 4.2 instead. Great video, very entertaining.
Great video, I'm doing same job on my truck in next week or so but getting it vacuumed checked and refilled at garage as I don't have the vacuum pump and equipment.
The values on the data plate only apply to genuine manufacturers condenser If your condenser is a copy part ,then you might need to adjust the amount of refrigerant used.Great vlog.
I’ve been restoring/repairing/renovating a 2004 Mini Cooper s. And now I’m itching for an L322 TDV8 😈
Excellent informative video yet again Thanks
I did my 05 L320 condenser last year when I bought it. I took the front bumper off and the crash bar and it made it really easy to swap the condenser over. Also ATS do a groupon offer every so often. Charged me £39 for a full regas with the offer
Great fix buddy. Wish I had mine nice and cold 😩
Ace job love your videos mate. Cant wait for the beemer to be done. Top man.
When I last replaced a condenser it had failed due to pinholes in the aluminium. So instead of replacing with another aluminium one, I got hold of a copy condenser made of copper imported from the US. The receiver dryer on that car was a separate unit which had to be replaced too. When refilling with refridgerent it's also important to replace the refridgerent oil too to keep the compressor lubed. O ring seals need to be checked and replaced, but with special blue ones. I didn't have all the kit for a DIY system vacuum and refill so took it to specialist car air con place to refill. Worked fine, until car was nicked off my drive by joy riders a few months later who trashed it. Since then places like Kwikfit have automatic recharge units on a trolley that they simply hook up and leave for an hour. After which the system should be fine, unless there is another leak somewhere....
It's been very quiet on the Nut Job channel, I hope that all is well with you and your family. It's been a strange year for sure but hopefully there will be some light at the end of the tunnel some time in 2021. Wishing you the very best for Christmas and the New Year.

Thanks John, best wishes to you too! Everything is ok here thanks, but as you say, it’s been an awkward/difficult year & I’ve had no enthusiasm to make any content for a while. I want to do more & get the engine rebuilt in the new year though 👍
Great job, always wondered how they did a recharge. The first part looked awkward. Stay safe and of course stay cool..💨❄️

Replacing the condenser was an absolute nightmare & I broke many bits of plastic & swore ALOT 😂... The recharge was the easiest bit - and really not very complicated (although I always was afraid to get involved the A/C for some reason)
Lovely Jubbly, never seen that as a DIY job.
Always wondered how this was done. I'd have got the little kitchen scales out and weighed the empty can and then you could ensure you've not put too much in from the second can 😁 I read somewhere the compressor won't run if it's too low and also too high on pressure if there is too much gas in. Nice video 👍🏻

That’s correct. Too much refrigerant is as bad as too little. I gave it a very rough recharge to see how it went - you can always remove/add refrigerant later. I’m more interested to see if it’ll hold charge over the long term 👍
Just wondering if any upcoming videos, haven't seen one in a while
Nice and easy. Good job......
Not one to do things by halves! Would be worth perhaps in a few months doing a video to show how you would top up the AC without draining it fully first. Don't give up on the BMW, she still loves you.
Great video again, your gone dark of late, any news on your bmw 530 and or Range Rover?
Hi bud, hope you're ok? Not seen a video since the L322 condenser repair, are you doing another video on putting the correct one in? Any news on repairing the BMW yet? Hope we hear from you soon? Tom
I would’ve liked to see a more detail and in depth installation of the condenser
Did the bearing on the prop shaft sort your vibrating issues please reply ASAP I’m worrying it’s the torque converter
Hi , If you can answer this , I would be grateful . I have an 08 plate which seems to have a different slam panel , I have th bumper off faced with a frame but doesn't look like the slam panel is separate , does it come off separately.
Hey there, we missing you !

I’m still here... Having a bit of a breather from KZread & focussing on work for a bit. I will be back...
where did you get the condenser from?
Good job👍🏼. I bought a refill from Halfords today to do mine, now ya got me wondering if my condensers shot ? 🤔💭

You will be able to tell if your kit has a pressure gauge on it. Mine was so bad I actually didn’t need the UV dye - I could hear & see it hissing out of the condenser! 😬
interesting, I looked at doing something similar but in my case the evaporator is leaking, I have to take the dashboard out to get to it and replace it, dealer has quoted 10 hours of work (it is more likely to be 20 hours of work) + £400 for new evaporator and some other bits and bobs, after VAT a huge amount of money, so I looked at the DIY route but thought you could not legally do this at home, seems like I was wrong. I may have to think about doing this again, first have to replace the rear suspension and brake pads / discs so may be next summer :-) great video btw

The part which is against the rules is releasing any system refrigerant into the atmosphere. In may case it was completely empty from the leak, so didn’t apply. The DIY gas isn’t actually R134a so isn’t governed by the same rules (it’s apparently LPG)

Nut Job good to know. Mine is empty also. I had contacted a local mobile ac guy and he said he would help but when I tried to work out a date and time he stopped responding which is not something you want when you have removed the entire dashboard, steering wheel and most of your centre console :-)
@Nut_Job.

Absolutely. I was dreading my evaporator being the source of my leak... good luck with it 👍
Could you upload a light upgrade tutorial ?
That aircontopup stuff is actually LPG :)
Alright nutty how’s it all going mate
Curious but did u only pull a vacum to test for leaks or does the new gas require it? Can you test for leaks with compressed air instead of a vac?
@Nut_Job.

The vacuum is mainly to remove all traces of moisture. Water vapour in the A/C system will destroy it
When or if are you coming back ?
When you said the beast has given up are you talking about the beemer you did the chain on?What happend?

How long did this take to replace, do you have any links where you bought the AC gas kit from
@Nut_Job.

I did the job in one day... but it was a bit of a pain. The a/c regas kit came from eBay & so did the gas cans. Can’t remember where the UV dye was from but I think I probably picked up the uv light & glasses from eBay too
Beauty - any ideas on when the BMW videos will be coming out Nut Job? Eagerly awaiting! :)

@@Nut_Job. A slipped bearing shell ought to be fixable from below the engine without a strip down. I had a big end bearing fail on the M1 on a six cylinder engine some years ago. Made an awful row as the piston was loose enough to crash into the valves. Dealer fixed it. If your problem on the dyno was limited to the shredded bearing tearing the oil seal, but compression is fine across all six cylinders, why not get the sump off and see if you can get away with just replacing the damaged bearing shells and the damaged oil seal?
Great video, could you link to all the stuff you used for recharging the system? The gauges, pump and refrigerant please.

If the leak isn’t obvious is there a way to do a diy leak test?
@Nut_Job.
4 жыл бұрын
The best way is to put some UV dye into the system & let it escape through your leak(s) and look for it with a UV torch 🔦 This is how I found the 2 leaks in my condenser. I didn’t film this process, but it’s not too difficult. I wasn’t sure how much i should encourage DIY on A/C systems, or how interested people would be...
@dancaulton6280

Nut Job cheers. Just wondered if there’s a simple way to inject the dye and then determine which part is needed. I see the Americans just put a gas in which includes the dye. But I don’t think you can do that over here.
@Nut_Job.
4 жыл бұрын
You can do it like that, but it seems like no one sells the cans with UV dye in the U.K. I had to buy the dye and add it as a liquid & waste a can of refrigerant to let it leak out with the dye so I could locate it. Still cheaper than taking it to a specialist + I now have a vacuum pump & recharge manifold for future use 👍
If I would be your neighbor, we would probably work together on our cars. My neighbor still asks me when will I finish my car. Endless project.
Whats up with bmw buddy
Come back !
Do you need to add some lubrication to the system?
@Nut_Job.
4 жыл бұрын
You probably should, but I didn’t in this instance. If replacing the compressor I definitely would (unless it came pre-lubricated, which I think they sometimes do)

@@Nut_Job. thanks for the great content every time, but in this case i would have made a professional service (flush, vac-test, refill R134a and PAG-Oil). You dont know how much oil left the system through the broken condenser and how much moisture entered. If the amount of oil is to low, the compressor will fail and thats much more expensive. Just an advice from someone who learned his lesson 😁
😀 more 💩 up front than my P38 RR, my AC has never worked, but that's the least of my worries the blend motors have a mind of there own.
@roofdownfun

I've done the ac on my P38 diesel, I changed both pressure switches and condenser with a new dryer, it's a new pump next! Blend motors are not a bad job to do, good luck. 👍

@@Nut_Job. sorry, KZread managed to swap my comments around in a video queue, my comment was : Don't want it to come across as a criticism but others should test their fan can spin on the back of the radiator and that their clutch on the compressor hasn't seized before buying any equipment to refill.

Yes, that’s a good point. I knew my compressor was operational because we filled the system with Nitrogen previously & the compressor did kick in 👍
