Range Rover Evoque vs Q3 og X1 Autofil
A very simple 4x4 test of the Audi Q3, the BMW X1 and the Range Rover Evoque.
All cars were started from the same point at the base of the hill. First attempts are with ESP systems engaged, if the car struggles we shut it off and try again without it.
Note: This is NOT a bias test. We notice several people claiming the test is tampered, we can assure you that this is NOT the case. No cars were given any advantage, we ran up the hill in the exact same way with all the cars.

Well the range rover didn't stop?
Both the BMW and Q3 were stopped in the middle of the uphill. ??????
I like how they chose an x1 m sport. It has nothing to do with uphill off-road. Tires are probably not fit to do so.
I read most of the comments. None addressed the question of the tires. Tires are as important as the type of 4x4 and traction control. Regards Richard
FUCKING DRIVER! Why he did not stop on the Hill with the Evoque?

franjowiesbaden77 Because he didn't have to? the other cars didn't have enough momentum to keep them going up the hill and their tires couldn't handle the terrain. RR makes the best Terrain system in the world.

+kulykski123 jeep would beat a rr any day and the other cars weren't driving like the rr and they chose the m sport bmw with track tires
I had the same questions before, now, I replayed it, you are right, there is no braking action while the cars stopped by themselves, only when it was about to going backwards. Nice test.
This test would be done properly only if all the cars are wearing same tyre.
@giovannygianny What you are seeing here is the ESP systems of the Q5 and the X1 cutting in on their first attempts. On the last two runs the X1 has ESP turned off. The Q5 gets up the hill right away when turning off the ESP on its second attempt. But the Range Rover gets up the hill on its first go, even with ESP engaged. So in short, we're not stopping the cars, the cars do it all by themselves.
It's like advertising Range Rover Evoque. BMW and Audi have bad tires? They cope with this problem easily ... Look at other tests.
Thanks,a lot.I am considering buying freelander 2.(Evoque is out of my budget.).In terms of hill handling, how is Freelander 2?
RR has some kind of "terrain response sytem", which can setup ESP+Haldex+other components for usage in diferrent situation/terrain, right? Have you changed this system in RR before first attempt or it was in default setup?
The Range Rover has several modes, we used the appropriate one for this terrain. It's got a modified Haldex 4, basically the same system as in the Audi Q3.
in several bmw tests it is seen clearly, even if the brakes were not applied, transmission was idle. What this test is all about?
BMW and Audi have Haldex 4x4 what about Range?
The X1 is not really an SUV like the 2 others. So the "test" is senseless.

No it's a glorified wagon with all sport, no utility. Actually, so is the Audi. But something tells me the X3 wouldn't fare much better. So you're right, the RR is the true SUV, and is redefining that term SUV with it's capabilities. This is fine for BMW and Audi if people want more sport, less utility, but I think RR might be starting a trend that the others may not be able to ignore.
The Audi and BMW, as we have commented earlier, stopped half way up the hill when the ESP system shut down all drive. The systems could not find traction, and instead of allowing the wheels to spin, brought the car to a halt. There were never brakes applied and the Audi and BMW were not tested from full stop in the middle of the hill, other than trying to get going after the ESP stopped the car. All cars were started from the same point at the base of the hill.
Hello WinacarUK! We see several people here showing sincere disbelief of this test. We seriously don't understand why. We never stopped the Q3 half way. What you are seeing is the ESP system shutting off power to the wheels when sensing loss of traction. We are keeping the accelerator pinned to the floor all the way on all cars. The Evoque is driven more steadily because it has way better traction. I mean, come on. What do we as an automotive magazine have to gain from staging this test?
same tires on all cars?
Good point, they need to reply and explain why?
Staged or not, the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 are just soft-roaders with traditional ESP systems that don't respond well to extreme surface conditions. The Evoque may have no more sophisticated hardware, but don't discount Land Rover's excellent Terrain Response system, which in this case really shows its worth. Will anyone buy and Evoque to off-road? Unlikely, but it is a selling point for those 1/10 buyers who may wish to follow their friend in a Grand Cherokee for a adventure.
the x1s and q3s wheels weren't spinning though. There wasn't any loss in traction. The systems weren't interfering with anything because it didn't know anything was happening. I dont know if they were manuals or automatics, but it sounds / looks more like the clutch was let out and throttle kept steady. If there was a loss in traction then the wheels would have been spinning, and then the car would've stopped. Evoque is better, no doubt, but x1 and q3 aren't that bad
@sujaygupta2000 This video was made by an independent car magazine. Brakes were not applied in any of the cars, other than preventing from sliding back down the hill when the traction was lost. I don't quite understand why you believe brakes were applied? In the video you clearly see the brake lights only being lit when the car has lost all its grip. And, for the record, Audi's Quattro-system in this Q3 is in fact the swedish Haldex 4-system, the same as in the Range Rover Evoque...
Yes, the speed of the Evoque was faster and more constant. Why? Because it found grip on its way up, unlike the other two who didn't, and stopped. Brakes were never applied and they all started from the same point at the base of the hill.
That's why we tested all of them both with and without the ESP systems.
We do not have to lie; it is simple to observe the brake lights in the video and decide for yourself. They only come on when the cars reverse down the hill again, therefore brakes could not have been applied when driving up the hill.
Why use ESP when climbing the hill? EPS is a safety feature, and climbing a hill is not safe. Wheels are spinning and the car i pushed to the limit. Every ESP system will prevent the wheels from wheelspin and even more, sprevent the car from speeding up.
The stop in the middle wasn’t done on purpose, it’s just the cars that stopped by themselves because they failed at climbing, the evoque didn’t
LIKE A BAWS?
The Audi stopped itself in the middle. It lost traction and the ESP system shut it down. We never applied brakes.
Again, we never applied brakes on the way up the hill.
Why you applied break in Audi Q3 in between. It creates confussion. My approximate rating is 1)Land Rover,2) Audi Q3 and then 3)BMW X1
What are we stupid? Harsh acceleration will trigger the ESP obviously. Plus you have only tested them in one type of terrain.
@Faiz42 You're quite right :)
The Range Rover got more speed before beginning on the climb simply because it had more traction to start with. The Audi and BMW never reached the same levels of traction, and as a result struggled far more to reach the top. I assure you, brakes were never applied other than to slow the descent when reversing back down the hill. This is also clearly evident in the video.
Nice & simple test. Those disbelievers need some education instead of blaming of unfair driving ;-)
A lot of comments here obviously show many have not driven a car with modern traction control. Yes it cuts throttle, and yes it is intrusive as hell.
@NinjTwo BMWs RunFlat-dekk hjelper nok ikke, nei.
We never intentionally stopped the X1 and Q3. They lost traction and stopped by themselves.
I will like to see this test, but this time on the highway.
You are testing a X1 with the M sport pkg. This car is equipped with "performance Street tires" try putting all season tires on it! This isn't comparing apples to apples.
bad driver(s) good cars all from...2008, are~ equal
Maybe the Bmw had trouble because of the Runflat tires. Also the same driver for the three test would be fair.
That doesn't seem right because based off what i know about audi's quattro, it would require wheel spin in order for it to realize that it's lost traction and the audi stopped way before the wheels started spinning.
This test with ESP = Testing a digital camera on the default basic resolution settings.
I love evoque
Even with a good tail wind the BMW and Audi had issues. RR raises the bar yet again in the luxury SUV line. In the next couple years watch how they respond to RR kicking their azzez in sales.
I think all cars passed silimilar.
here it's all about tyres
tommel ned? hallo!!! du kjører på slicks
you guys have to realize the other cars stopped not on purpose. BMW awd tries to prevent wheel spin so if there is slippage it brakes the wheels.. so it stopped. Audi Quattro uses mechanical difs which let wheels spin if there is no traction, so he had to brake to not roll. the RR did a slow crawl no problems so he didn't stop!

Seriously? It is pretty obvious on the first try he stopped the Audi halfway up and stopped its momentum. It would have been nice to see him do the same thing with the Evoque. They say this was not a biased test. If they truly wanted to remove any appearance of bias, then they should have stopped the Evoque halfway, so we could see how it would perform with the loss of momentum.

It definitely wasn't on purpose, the awd system stopped the wheels

you can hear him not pushing the gas rofl stop talking, the AWD on such expensive cars is not stupid to stop you mid hill climb lol, i went climbing through a snowy hill last winter if the car cannot make it the wheels will spin not stop rofl, and the Q3 has haldex Quattro it is supposed to spin a bit for the AWD to send power.
it should be an x3
@megitarose5576

Then it should be LR sports then? It’s the smallest car from all makes
I found that hilarious that you'd ever bother with the Evoque on that hill, it's nothing for it, stop it half way and start again even in snow and it'll have it. We looked at the Q3 and x! which don't have the capabilities or cockpit feel the Evoque has. Very overpriced for what they are.
The Range Rover had more traction, and could build more speed. No cars were intentionally stopped, they stopped because they ran out of traction. It's very simple, really.
Any one can see how this is manipulated the speed he attacks the uphill with the Evoque is much faster and constant where with the two other cars he goes so slow at the steepest part of the incline, loosing momentum and forcing the car to start spinning and loosing grip, any off road driver would know you should not loose momentum by virtually stopping on the incline as he did with Audi and BMW on their first attempts, it is obvious the Audi could also have gone up on its first attempt.
It is completely biased. Stop the Land Rover at the middle of the hill and try to move on from that. The driver obviously did that with the audi.
@stevep6897

The Land Rover was the only one to start off on the hill's incline. The Audi started lower down with the rear wheels on the flat stuff. The BMW started on the flat stuff. The Land Rover did not lose traction. That is why the others stopped. The others were unable to regain traction/start on the incline. Tyres play a part, but it is mainly down to the distribution of power across the driver train ... The Audi did it by increasing power to the drive train to get the torque (increased wheel speed so more slip). The BMW drive train deceased power to the slipping wheels but could not develop the torque. The Land developed the torque at low power meaning that wheel speed was low, so no slippage.
And, what means this video? If u want to climb on a little hill (especially! without stop in the middle) u need RR? Lol
@MrRoidman og range roveren veier 14 tonn!
My rating for Offroading capability:1)Land Rover 2)Audi Q3 2) Beemer X1
Audi is the best one
Remember 10000 dollars more.
I have an Evoque and I bought it because it really is the only small, luxurious, and practical SUV that works as both a car and a truck. Everything else is really a "girly" car made for mothers who don't want to be seen in a minivan or women who want 4wd and don't want a typical "carlike" looking vehicle. Land Rover makes vehicles that are both functional on road and off road and can handle both equally well. Ask a guy who drives a Land Rover/Range Rover what kind of engine is in his vehicle and he can actually tell you right to the exact horsepower and torque. Ask a woman what kind of engine is in her Subaru or Rav4 or Audi Q5, or BMW X3 etc. and she might tell you it's in the front of the car under the hood. Land Rover/Range Rover still has a set of balls unlike everything else. OH, and Jeep?, Junk!!
Utrolig stygg lyd i dieselmotoren til X1!!
senseless test as range rover has better equipment for offroading and costs almost 20,00 dollars more as the X1 and Q3
I cant believe that is true
that's BS. you're comparing the incomparable.
this is not fair ! Audi has been stepped in the middle ! and Range did not !
Also the most stupid person on this planet can tell you, that the tires are the only problem :D
Må flire av BMW'en..
this is not faire. with bmw and audi, the driver, stop the car and after he try to go on. with range rover he drive continue without stop the car. i'm range rover fan,but this is not correct!... sorry.
Come on...it is obvious this is staged! 1. Steering play and harsh acceleration with the X1. 2.Less harsh acceleration but stop half way with the Q3 3. Driving steady with the Evoque. However, the Evoque is the best one to get for many other reasons.
just compare the prices. LR costs more and does offroad better. BMW and Audi are not real off-road cars.
Next time, turn on BMW's DTC before making such test.
LR>x1>q3
Land Rover is the best car of land.
Stupid test, range Rover didnt stopped middle of the hill!!!!
crap test!! its obvious the q3 was stopped halfway
ahahahah
A 30.000€ car can not do what an old willy jeep can that's funny
Fake
Range Rover is the Best!!!.....
excuses lmao!
Fake video, check the tyre !!
BMW ahhahahhaha
bare flaks. bmw x1 er best
