Range Report: Kahr Arms CT380 (Single Stack .380 ACP)

In this Range Report video I take a look at and review another very affordable pistol from Kahr. I have no liked these pistols in the past, mainly due to their horrible trigger and lack of accuracy because of it. These are popular due to their price point and many people defend them and say they are amazing. So I am here to find out. This video documents my personal thoughts, opinions and experiences with this pistol. Yours may vary.

To many people, myself included, the Kahr trigger is like a VERY GOOD revolver trigger. It's a great choice for a safe defensive pistol.

while the trigger pull is l-o-n-g for kahr pistols, in my opinion they are in no way unpredictable. it is the same every time

Thanks for your review. However, you speak negatively about the Kahr brand in general. I have owned a Kahr CM9 for 12 years, and I have put over 2000 rounds through it without a single malfunction. Two variables that affect the performance of small Kahr pistols are the break-in period and the use of the slide lock on the initial chambering. Neither of these Kahr oddities were mentioned. However, I appreciate the time and effort you put forth in producing this video and helping all of us viewers make a critical examination of the guns we buy.

I appreciate that and thank you for your insight. These pistols were not new and I did not think that the break-in period was applicable in this case.

Jason- Kahr specifies the user is supposed to always drop the slide with the slide release, not slingshot it. I have noticed slingshot will sometimes lead to a nosedive. Now I’m no kahr apologist but that’s what they advise. My Kahr CW380 was never reliable. I’d take an LCP over it any day.

Thank you for the information. I feel the gun should run both ways. Afterall, if I missed that, most average gun people will too.

My CW380 i bought some years ago would fail to go into battery frequently. Did some research and found the extractor needed to be rounded on the lower half of it. Some filing and trying, got it to where it functions perfectly and reliably, always since. Magguts spring and follower replaced originals, now 7+1. As for the trigger, to each there own, but that long, butter smooth pull forces you to be deliberate, not jerk the trigger, and send an aimed shot. Many shooters say to shoot a double action revolver for a year, most will become a better shot. Kahrs are known for their accuracy, due to the design of the feed ramp in conjunction with the barrel. But i understand that Kahrs are not everyone's cup of tea, but i get along very well with my two and shoot nearly weekly.

The reason for the DAO trigger is to provide for double-strike capability in the event of a light primer strike, etc.

Incorrect. The kahr is not a true DAO like a hammer mechanism. It requires the slide cycling to reset. If doubtful please examine any Kahr pistol.

Why do you torture yourself with a brand of guns that you hate, lol? I will say again that the trigger action was an intentional feature. All the way in, then all the way out, just like a double action revolver. My 9mm is fatter, but it has a steel frame with rubber grips on top. Folks that started out with double action revolvers do better with these pistols. Folks that are dedicated Glock or similar such striker fired pistol users will hate this because of the designed trigger pull. To those folks I would say that the Kahr pistols are not for you. You are trying to get different results by testing similar pistols of the same brand. I would only have been surprised if you stated that you loved the pistol and were making it part of your EDC.

A double action revolver type trigger was what they were going for. If you compare a Kahr trigger to a hammerless Ruger SP101 or a Smith hammerless J frame, then you'd say it's MUCH better than either of those. *Just saw your trigger scale results, at 5.5lb trigger pull weight you have roughly half the trigger pull weight of any revolver in double action only mode.

They need a break in time. I once had seen a review where someone had a lot of problems but after 100 rounds or so it run flawless. Somone else reported the same in the comments.

Re the magazine, the magazine seems to drop part-way out, and the 7th round doesn't feed. I don't think I'm depressing the release as the mag only falls enough not to feed the last round. Always the 7th. Not sure what downloading to 6 would do... Slow-fire at the range, it's very accurate close up. Haven't tried your rapid fire test yet.

I've had 2 KAHR's. One 9mm and that 380. That 380 was hot garbage. Because of the plastic rails it was always jamming. I sent it back to KAHR and they said it was functioning properly. I owned the 9mm but sold it after shooting a magazine through it.

@@thetexasgunvaultOK, I don't wish to convert anyone's opinion, but I like the P9 & P380 for their size, shape & reliable function. I can't really speak to the "CT" or "CW" models, but there are slight differences that might make "P" series pistols function, ie: the polish of the feed ramp and spring(s) steel composition. Like most of us, I don't want a gun fight.... just require something workable for self defense that I can put on target and keep it there. Trigger function is a big deal in the process, but I find the Kahr triggers to be well suited to safety and don't mind the revolveresk double action style trigger pull without a wall before the break. It takes practice, but personal acceptance to trigger feel is key as well. You covered a bunch of good points of the mechanics of Kahr pistols and most people agree on the fact that a carry pistol needs to be reliable and shootable. The P380 is indeed ammo sensitive and likes FMJ round nose over many hollowpoint designs, but when it comes to finding reliable ammo for fussy guns, I believe from my own experience that cartridge overall length is a factor that is frequently a requirement for the pistol to feed all of the rounds until the mag goes empty. There are plenty of pistols that eat all sorts of ammo right out of the box, Kahr pistols, like many others may function well with some ammo types, shapes & sizes... and not so much with others. If the user is willing to spend a little time, energy and cost to find what works, then you may like them..... or not. Keep the vids coming, your doing well.

Its a self defence pistol. Do you realy think that you stage the trigger in such a situation or waiting for a wall? That is ridiculous. The triggers from Kahr are very good and smooth. Yes they are long but for a reason. 5 pounds is still much less than any DA from a snubby. 380 also is not underpowered. I have seen some other reviews and none of them had a problem to get all 7 rounds in the mag and did work,

I like to think I provide reviews that are different and point out different things rather than just be a copy and paste of all other reviews. I am not here to to be popular or famous. Just be true and honest to those that watch.
