RANDOM FINN 5/7 Kärkolä

We set on an adventure to find out what finns are really like, choosing them by random. Turned out finns either look at animals or use machines. When they are not drinking coffee. I hope this video series gives you a brief snapshot what everyday life in Finland is like.

Things I want to mention:
Couple minutes is really short time to tell anything about a person’s life. I hope you take these as quirky snapshots that might reveal something about the larger picture of this country.
This was filmed in July-August. Life in winter could give a really different picture.
By coincidence this selection of random streets emphasized small municipalities. More about that in the method section.
We arrived to the streets around noon and during a holiday season (July 11th-2nd August). That might explain why only two finns were working on those days.
ABOUT THE SAMPLING METHOD
We wanted the sampling to reflect the population evenly between differently populated streets, so instead of drawing literally random streets inside Finland we actually first selected seven random finns from with the help of local register office (maistraatti). The names and contact information of those finns were not disclosed to us, but we received home street names of these seven random finns. These home streets are the “random streets” where we headed. With this method we made sure that the most sparsely populated streets were not overrepresented in the sampling and vice versa.
However, this particular sampling was actually quite unusual in the way that it contained really small municipalities, the total population of those seven municipalities being 203 213. I later ran the same randomization again hundred times and only in one sampling, the total population was smaller (172 081) than in this one. Average total population was a bit over one million. So the third of the population who live in bigger towns than Lahti are not represented here.
Alternative method would have been to reach random people directly by phone. Due to privacy issues we couldn’t receive these phone numbers ourselves. It would have been possible only by using a third party telemarketing service. Which sounded.. dull.

I noticed while living in Finland that almost everyone seems to have a best friend they've known since they were 5 or so! That's really rare for me in the US where the only people I've known that long are family members.
