Ranching The New West

This film was produced by Ronald Tobias, a good friend of Duke's from Montana State University, whose team spent two weeks on Chico Basin Ranch, in 2007. It is the most comprehensive film produced about the philosophy behind everything we do, both on the Zapata and the Chico. We hope that you enjoy it.

As a former working cowboy and a former teacher of Ecology & Environmental Science at the college level, thanks for an excellent short film. Kudos to all involved in the making of this movie. Superb.

I'm glad to see the ranchers taking care of their stock and a lot of things seem back to normal but, I did notice that the skies are still laden with chemtrails to help those folks out. It's no wonder that the cattle are still in jeopardy today. I don't envy the ranchers or the cattle today with all the subversion by the EPA trying to look like they really CARE about the ranchers or the cattle that provide food for our nation. Things haven't changed much with exception on higher costs to the ranchers and the livestock paying with their premature lives ending so soon.

Well, get rid of those herfords and get some brahma's. They'll stomp those coyotes (and just about any thing else) in the ground. That knife was sharpened a time or two- cool.

At the 1:40 mark the guy that was saying that you need to ELIMINATE the cow that let the Coyote get the calf is Something i TOTALLY do not agree with...Because if there's MULTIPLE coyotes then the Cow could not Defend a calf HOWEVER She might could with JUST ONE COYOTE...but i PERSONALLY think that ALL Ranchers/Farmers SHOULD ELIMINATE EVERY COYOTE THAT THEY SEE & HAVE SNARES SET for the ones they don't see!!!! Get RID OF ALL coyotes

Can't you guys brand in a more humane way?

+sfbluestar Not really. Fire branding is not really all that painful to the animal. Ever seen how thick the hide is on these animals?

Cowboy boots have been designed since they were invented to be used as protective footwear in the West to protect against creatures like rattlesnakes and Gila Monsters. Leather is used because of how strong and thick it is to keep the rattlesnake's bigass fangs and the Gila Monster's strong jaws and venom. That's how thick it is.

electric-iron branding and dehorning cattle are kind of cruel to me =|

+Henry Rights (HoneyBeeFromCountryside) Horns are the weapons of cattle. De-horning lowers the chances of injuring the cowboys. And branding, either or cold, gives a permanent mark for ID that is very difficult to change. Ear tags can get ripped or cut off.

But horns can help the cattle defend themselves against prediters. I would leave them on yhem . But also the feed lots and processers don't like them
