Ranching and Grizzly Bears 2015

Originally produced in 2004 by Conservation Northwest (then the Northwest Ecosystem Alliance) Chris Morgan (Insight Wildlife Management), Vidcom Productions and John Cofrin, we've updated this 30 minute documentary-style film for 2015 and the announcement of a long-awaited North Cascades grizzly bear restoration EIS!
In producing this video, we traveled to Montana's ranching and grizzly bear country to meet with livestock operators, ranchers and expert wildlife managers to see how other states are successfully coexisting with recovering grizzly bear populations.
For more information on North Cascades grizzly bear recovery, please visit: www.northcascadesgrizzly.org
With grizzly bear restoration proposed in Washington's North Cascades ecosystem, ranchers, farmers and livestock operators, as well as anyone living or recreating in bear country, should be taking steps to prevent conflict with these native animals, protecting both bears, people and property from harm.
As you'll see in this video, with education, bear awareness and some proper precautions, coexisting successfully with grizzly bears on the range is easier than you might think!

It comes down to this if you live in the east and a fox kills your chickens you get the shotgun and kill him, if a coyote kills your sheep get the shotgun and eliminate him. Likewise if a grizzly kills your cow get the 30 30 and eliminate him !

This program really went out of its way to paint the grizzly bear as a non cattle killer even so far as to make the claim that the bears mostly ate drowned bison and elk rather than hunting them. The grizzly bear can run faster than a race horse and will when it wants hunt and kill wild game of all kinds elk, bison and deer included. The main reason there are so few interactions with domestic livestock is that bear numbers are extremely low compared to livestock numbers and humans are a huge deterrent to bears. If a bear gets the opportunity to kill a cow it will do so in a heartbeat. I suppose this program wants to paint the bears in the best light so as to help in their conservation but I find truth to be best in all circumstances!!

Agreed. Also grizzly bears have killed more than 18 people in the last 10. Years. They’re very strong wild animals. They have no problem taking down a 2000lb moose.

This program is very pro bear conservation. However, the ranchers are reimbursed for their livestock losses, so I would think that insurance policy would make them less concerned about the bears or the livestock threat they pose. (They still need to be vigilant about their families' safety.) Also these ranchers have enormous stakes, thousands and thousands of acres, so if the grizzly is going to share the land, it's inevitable they will be crossing paths with livestock on the rancher's domain.

I just read they still say there is only 0-5 grizzlies in the northern cascades most likely zero in the US and the 0-5 being in BC. This is what happens when the bureaucracy of the government is involved. Just like any government entity the survival of the bureaucracy becomes quickly the primary focus. You get nothing but the idiot government “scientists” like you see in this video, jockeying for notoriety, pay, and to keep their jobs. I’m all for building the Grizzly population and it could be done in way less than 100 years. I mean think about it, it’s been 5 years since the IGBC announced this and there are still no grizzlies in the n. cascades.? They catch and release grizzlies all over the Rockies. I could go on but why? It won’t change.

People hate ranchers especially US ranchers. US ranchers are fat lazy welfare queens. Do what the rest of the world does supervise your herds with dogs and shepherds. In places like Romania dogs and shepherds run big brown bears off all the time. The future crackdown for US ranching is coming

The comparison of grizzly bear kills to domestic dog kills is not an apples to apples comparison. There are a few thousand grizzly bears at best in the lower 48 and all are in low population states/areas. Whereas there are millions of domestic dogs that live in every state. There are more dogs in California than all the grizzly bears in the lower 48 combined. I always hate when people use comparisons like this that are not real comparisons at all. Such as there are more people killed by crocodiles in Africa than in Europe. No kidding really that's because there aren't crocodiles native to Europe but it's a comparison!

I don't believe the line that bears prefer rotten meat over fresh meat. I think it's more a case of preferring easy meat over high-effort meat. It's not hard to find video footage of bears chasing and killing elk calves while the elk are small enough to catch. You can also find footage of them attempting to take bison calves. Even instances of bears taking injured adult caribou are available. To say that bears don't take prey is wishful thinking. Bears are omnivores, and opportunists.

The bears don’t want to be around people especially the black bears. If they get away wiff of humans they’ll head the other direction. But they will come eat your garbage that you don’t know how to put away. If you’re quiet and you encounter them on a path you’re going to scare them. Then of course there’s a good chance they’ll attack. People are stupid. And it’s obvious most these people that are making comments have never even been in the wilderness or around bears.

After years of western medicine just making my health worse I’m basically a carnivore Added some low carb vegetables. So stop being ranchers? Find another type of job? You might want to educate yourself on the importance of eating meat and the dangers of being a vegan.
