Ramping Up Archery Training & Getting Back into Top Shooting Shape

Shooting my Recurve Bow today at 70 meters, using the 12 arrows in 4 minutes drill to continue getting back my archery shooting strength. I quickly realize that I am not yet ready to continue at this level of training intensity. Knowing when to Quit is just as important as identifying weaknesses to work on.

Jake makes archery look so noble and elegant- that is seriously a great mark of an excellent athlete: the ability to make it look easy. Watching him is pure inspiration and a special part of what the modern internet allows. In fact I would say that top archers, like Jake, make it look so easy the sport gets less respect because of it, which I think displays just how great this sport is. Keep it up Jake, as a young archer (15) videos like this make me pursue my better, future self.

Well tuned bow Jake! Shooting bare shafts out to 70 meters is dope! 😂 my 6 & 7 y o granddaughters were watching with me and the 7 y o said “ Golly he shoots good far away! I hope he gets some sleep and eats good before he makes another video!” 😝 she was def paying attention to you! Now she wants me to take them outside to shoot!

Insane! 660ish with bare shafts in there. Puts you in the top 25 of the qualifying round at the Tokyo Olympics. Strewth! I recognize and relate to your struggle, but unlike me and most archers, your quality is so HIGH.

Mate, really appreciate the effort and reality of this video,... it's taught me to keep it objective and to re-access as you go. I've recently been taking more time in my holding phase... can't shoot as many arrows and can only shoot for half the time and when I get tired it goes south very (very) quickly... mentally and physically! So thank you, this has certainly helped keep my shooting positive.

It’s very interesting to see how your clicker control when you “break down” is very similar to mine on a normal day. The groupings as a result are very relatable too, although I shoot a bit more reds haha. Maybe I should get my shot looking like yours at the beginning of the day, strong bow side and lots of elbow movement on expansion! Just thinking out loud with some things to work on haha

Thank you for your unwaveringly high-quality content. Question re practice. If you've decided to work on one specific thing, and during your practice session you realise that you need to work on three other things, do you stick to the first thing only, or do you try to incorporate work on the three other issues also?

I've got a R-Core Master wooden mid angle with lifeline ridge and hex antislip pattern grip on my recurve which I really like but I'll be very interested in checking out your grip when Aris adds it to the R-Core site. He teased it the other day on Facebook and was a tad surprised to see it this video. I wish I shot at 50M like you do at 70M. I've just got to put more work in to get more consistent and get those scores up.

Hi jake. 1)Can u make a video of your mental processes for the whole shot cycle and give some tips to create a personalized mental processes. 2)And please make a video about ,how to perform better in competition ( mind set in competition , focus , how to practice when the competition is getting near, 15 days before competition ,5 days before , what drills , arrow volume, what to focus ,etc...... This will be really helpful for us , because most of us are good in training but can't give their personal best in competition Plzzzz give a solution to this jake

Awesome shooting dude! But I wanted to see you switch over to your barebow halfway thru for a comparison lol! I wonder how high do the arrows arc at that distance? 20 to 30 feet maybe? Pretty sure you can calculate it if you know the arrow speed...

Very very interesting video Jake. While doing your timed drill, it was really interesting to see that almost all shots taken more than 6 or 7 seconds were off. 5 to 6 seconds seems to be the sweet spot (from set up to release). I liked the also the overall message of the video. I believe it is important to know when to stop when your training is more impacting the quality of your technique than being beneficial. I have heard some local archers being part of the high-performance program of our federation saying that they mainly receive shots volume goals (i.e: 700 arrows a week etc), but with no quality monitoring. Is it the same with Archery USA? Do you think shooting volume for the sake of it still an appropriate approach to modern archery?

You mention the weak bow shoulder creeping up as you haven't been shooting as much lately. What do YOU do to strengthen the bow shoulder when you're starting almost at square 1 and keep it strong as you train? Bow shoulder is my weakest part of the shot.

🎯🏹"See here how everything lead up to this day, and it's just like any other day that's ever been "...[Gerry Garcia] 🧙🏽‍♂️ Hi! Jake 😄🖐🏽 Like you I'am shooting morn'mor every week. Currently with my barebow I'am shooting @ baseball sized balloon 🍅 @20 yds on target board, popping it 1 out of 3 shots, other 2 sitting right next to it. Took me 4 years to get to this level. My set up is 23" Hoyt riser, long limb SMS, got 42lb & 50 lb. Arrow rest[ my design] arrow sits 1/4 " above rest vertical, and 1/16 off rest, horizontal, perfect for my Vector 600s 4 feathers straight, just tinyest of helix pass right through rest, minimal contact. Riser handel, hand wrapped leatherw glue perfect custom fit , let dry to hard, outstanding result. Bow, complete 'center shot aspect, getting 205 fps. Moving target back to 35 yds and having a blast.
