    Luis Mario is right. Johnny loved Reagan and didn't want to do this song; it's a miracle not only that they record it, but even that they included it in the live set list; Dee Dee wasn't against Reagan that much, but didn't like what he said in Bitburg; Joey was ABSOLUTELY against Reagan.

    This song is personal. My dad was a reporter, Myron S. Waldman, who broke the story of Ronald Reagan going to a graveyard in Bitburg where Nazis were buried when he said he had no intention of visiting a concentration camp. My dad's question was "He's going to honor the perpetrators of the Third Reich while ignoring the victims of the Third Reich. Do you have any comment on that?" Later that summer, I found the single at a record store.

  • @beashnpull

    4 жыл бұрын

    Tbh, that was nitpicking bull. The graveyard was for all those who died during the war, it wasn't specifically a Nazi burial place. 4000 buried there, 49 were Nazis. Reagan said "These [SS troops] were the villains, as we know, that conducted the persecutions and all. But there are 2,000 graves there, and most of those, the average age is about 18. I think that there's nothing wrong with visiting that cemetery where those young men are victims of Nazism also, even though they were fighting in the German uniform, drafted into service to carry out the hateful wishes of the Nazis. They were victims, just as surely as the victims in the concentration camps." I can't say, "you are wrong" to Reagan for what he said here.

  • @urshitheads

    @urshitheads

    4 жыл бұрын

    The initial itinerary was for Reagan to go to the cemetery where Nazis (it doesn't matter how few. What matters is that they are buried there) are buried but skip the concentration camp. Such a thing could inspire Holocaust deniers, Neo Nazis and other domestic racist organizations. (See how Trump's "very fine people on both sides" quote delighted the Alt Right.) By adding the concentration camp and acknowledging the victims he mitigated that damage.

  • @urshitheads

    If anyone needs them, here are the Lyrics: You've got to pick up the pieces C'mon, sort your trash better Pull yourself back together Maybe you've got too much cash Better, call, call the law When you gonna turn yourself in? Yeah You're a politician Don't become one of Hitler's children Bonzo goes to Bitburg, then goes out for a cup of tea As I watched it on TV somehow it really bothered me Drank in all the bars in town to understand your foreign policy Pick up the pieces My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down Ooh yeah, my brain is hanging upside down And I need something to slow me down Shoulda wished her happiness Wish her the very best Fifty thousand dollar dress Shaking hands with your highness See through you like cellophane You watch the world complain But you do it anyway Who am I, am I to say Bonzo goes to Bitburg, then goes out for a cup of tea As I watched it on TV somehow it really bothered me Drank in all the bars in town to understand your foreign policy Pick up the pieces My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down Ooh yeah, my brain is hanging upside down And I need something to slow me down There's one thing that makes me sick It's when someone tries to hide behind their politics I wish that time could go by fast Somehow they manage to make it last Ooh yeah, yeah, my brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down Ooh yeah, yeah, my brain is hanging upside down And I need something to slow me down Ooh yeah, yeah, my brain is hanging upside down And I need something to slow me down My brain is hanging upside down

    It's odd how I never really see people talking about the message of this song when it's such an explicitly political song. It's almost like the song is too good for it's own good. No one really takes the message to heart because they're distracted by how good the song sounds musically.

    The lyrics are *VERY* specific. In general people like songs they can relate to in one way or the other. Not many people in the past 30 years can relate to anything having to do with Ronald Reagan. Also, I think more than a few people, myself included, take Johnnys side on this one in regards to the lyrics and not necessarily agree with them. He didnt like the message but played it anyway. I think its one of The Ramones best and most complete songs from start to finish. Lots of Ramones songs have a sing along chorus or whatever but are otherwise kinda incomplete. This song has all the structor of a great song. Without knowing what the lyrics are in reference to, they seem just kinda obscure.
