A funny character, for the most part....but poignant in his own way. In the final scene when the train reached New Orleans, Sledge was asleep, and Snafu didn't want to wake him just to say goodbye. He just looked at him for a moment, down at a guy who had been his trusted friend and loyal comrade through all the fights they had been in.....and then stepped off the train at the station, where no one was waiting for him. In just a few seconds, you come to realize just how lonely he was, and how little he had of family and friends outside of the Marines he had fought with. Of course, all this is implied, rather than stated...but it made for one of the more touching moments in the series. A great role, played by a damn good actor.

Hmmm. Good catch! Just my 2 cents, talking about getting off the train, he was alseep, why wake him up? I mean... like what you just said. I don't know, I think id do same thing. No one ever awaits me in the airport or wherever I go. Though I had little of family and friends, if any. At first I though there was something wrong with him, in a way. The way he speaks. I don't know :) Kinda familiar to me, but on the other part, Lacky is also a character that i'm kinda with, BUT, I'm shynear woman. The other guy, Doctor son, I'm almost like him. Exactly like him. Exactly. 100% that's me. With some characteristics from Lucky perhaps. I mean, a combination, but the Doctor son, I'm like him, and you can add the no friends and yeah. I think I need to re-watch the movie some time soon, or whenever, just watched all of it in two parts. 1-3 then 3--10, but there is more to pick upfrom the movie, as I cleary missed these parts, was more focused on therir emotions, the way their character wasbuild and transformed and their life. And such...

SNAFU Merriell Shelton was my Father, Norwood Shelton's youngest brother. They were very close. Rami captured his character brilliantly. I knew him well and loved him very much. He married had 2 sons, and owned a heat and air conditioning contracting business in St Franssville Louisiana, about 20 miles from Baton Rouge. After Sledge wrote his book that much of this information came from for the series Merriell heard about the book and contacted Sledge. They had a reunion in which Merriell's wife Gladys, a sweet lady indeed was amazed at their stories. All that she knew was that he was in the war. He never spoke of it. He did suffer from PTSD but he lived a full life and was a happy man. Sledge was a poll Bearer at Merriell's funeral in 1993.

This leaves out a particularly telling scene, I think around near when Snafu is chucking pebbles into the skull of a dead Japanese machine gunner. Snafu is a disturbed character, somewhat manacling at times, but when Sledge goes after some gold teeth, Snafu gets angry at him and scolds Sledge over some made up concern over what disease Sledge might catch from doing something Snafu had had no qualms of doing, almost as if Snafu knows thats out of character for his friend to be doing. As if to say "Dont become like me". That was an interesting scene.

It was the one line that broke the ice between them. Snafu seemed to be a dick to everyone, especially the new arrivals. I think it was to protect himself. Similar to what is said in Band of Brothers, you shouldn't get too close with the replacements if you know they are too green and will die soon anyways. Then it's better not to get attached to protect you own mental health.

I was so surprised when I fist watched the Pacific to see the actor of Snafu. I only knew him from that weird sitcom I watched when I was a teenager. He was playing that gay iranian teenager from next door. So different in this! But having him say goodbye to Sledge wouldn't have fit his character nor the real story. I mean, he kinda was a dick for the most part right? He began to trust Sledge because he noticed that he was a good marine, but to others he was a total dick. He barely cared for others, only for himself. Even so he is one of my favourite characters, because he is kinda weird from the get go. But seeing how even he can't take the horrors of war anymore at some point and that he was starting to lose it too was a great anti war moment.

When Sledge sat down reading the letter from his parents about his dog dying is an important scene. This scene shows how well these Marines knew each other. Just the look on Sledge’s face told Snafu something was really bothering Sledge. Then Snafu talked about 7 years for a dog for every one year of a human. Snafu was attempting to comfort Sledge. This scene shows how close these Marines had become. They knew more about each other than their own family members did. Combat brings out the best of each and each Marine knows how much each needs each other. I think this scene should be added to your compilation.

If you wanna hear the about what actually happened I suggest reading “With The Old Breed” by Eugene Sledge. The Pacific was great, but sadly there was a ton of extra shit added or changed to appeal to tv audiences.

Sledge said in his book Snafu saved his life... On multiple occasions. Taught sledge alot.. Sledge also saved snafu.. War brothers... They always shared the same fox hole.. They could wake each other up with a whisper... The Japanese where very close and could hear loud voices. They often attacked soldiers as they slept in their foxholes or when they had to piss.. The Japanese would take an American prisoner and torture them slow so the americans could hear the screams... Years after the war... Sledges wife whispered sledge hammer in Eugene sledges ear to see if he would wake up... He did... That was an amazing story to me...

Back before WW2, you cannot be drafted into the Marines. You sign up or, if you are already a soldier, you asked for a discharge so you can re-enlist. That's what GySgt John Basilone did. He was in the Army with the 16th Infantry in Manila when he wanted to be a Marine. Sledge, too, signed up to be a Marine. Draftees are usually assigned to the Army or Navy.
