I'm pretty familiar with GSC weapons and I'm not afraid to Google, but I was deeply pleased that the build instructions for KT Termination included a page with all the weapons organised and named! For what it showed of the thought behind it.

Yeah, I clean forgot they had started putting those in instructions as well as caudexes. It's awesome.

I don’t like using my phone for gaming purposes, much for the same reasons as you. For list building, surprise-surprise, I use a pencil and paper with the downloaded most recent points costs printed out. My current favorite method of referencing unit stats is the cards. Either homemade or purchased if available. Tracking game state, back to pencil and paper because you just can’t trust dice not to get knocked about or accidentally picked up and rolled.

Fair, personally I will always want something digital as I find hand writing stuff desperately tedious.

It’s kind of insane how there isn’t a Launchbay Next or YASB 2 equivalent for 40K.

32:17 I would agree wholeheartedly were it not for the fact (which you mentioned to be fair) the cards are next to impossible to buy.

Yeah, GW need to get it together when it comes to selling decks of cards.

I love the physical books. Because I’m old. I subscribe to White Dwarf. I read the magazines, basically, cover to cover. I buy the Black Library books. The paper versions. I just like books.

I do agree that it's nice that these things continue to exist. I also subscribe to White Dwarf, but I must confess to not reading each one cover to cover.

I think the issue is people see it as having to buy a whole book to get the rules on the app which doesn't really make a difference as you say, you'd have bought the codex anyway, but I think people see digital content as less valuable so want to buy the digital rules for less (or get them for free). I'd be willing to bet that if GW released the digital code as a stand alone for like £10-20 people would think it was a great deal.

Yeah, aside from people wanting something for nothing I don’t understand the hesitation. And, as you pointed out - they can use the app for free. I will point out that after the balance dataslate there are some rules out of sync.

The Vtuber you talked about did a video. IIRC, there are some core rules changes that haven’t made it to the core rules pdf yet & some data sheet changes (like the one for captains & canonesses) that haven’t made it to the app yet.

We use Tabletop Battles for game management in 40K

Is the 40K app well updated? I think it’s very haphazard. For instance, the synapse and teeming brood changes haven’t made it into the combat patrol section

That's really interesting, I generally find the app really well updated but I have not looked into the combat patrol stuff for a while. Are we absolutely sure that in the mind of GW that balance dataslate changes are supposed to apply to combat patrol?

  • @OurCognitiveSurplus

@@TabletopImpulse Personally I think it’s very unclear. The data slate does say “this applies however you play 40k”. I understand that TOs are applying it - but I haven’t seen that totally confirmed. It’s frustrating, because I’m enjoying combat patrol as a way to go slightly bigger than KT. But the rule situation is very confusing.

There’s something profoundly satisfying about the idea that Codexes and Harry Potter are the saviours of children’s literature. 😂 I’m 100% down with the idea of Codexes as lore vehicles, they just shouldn’t be the primary source of rules. That should be digital and free. The argument you briefly postulated that free rules mean bad rules really doesn’t hold water either as I can list the companies that provide digital rules which are not better than Corehammer on the fingers of one foot.

To clarify, what I postulate is that if GW made rules free the rules would get less man hours put into them. Because of how GW is organized into profit centers, the rules department would no longer have a balance sheet to point to to justify existing. You can have good free rules, if you don't have the corporate culture of GW. But I think it's basically impossible for GW to make good free rules.
