Ramayana - Why was Janaka spellbound on seeing Lord Rama?
Janaka was the King of Mithila, also known as Videhraj as he was beyond the perception of the body. Although he was a mahayogi yet he did his duties as a King. Also in Mithila, everyone worshipped formless or the nirgun nirakaar Brahman.
King Janaka was practicing the upasana of nirakaar(formless) Brahman and a sahaj virakt(detached from the material world) untill he met Lord Rama and Lakshmana. What happens next changes the Janaka's outlook in a tremendous way.
King Janaka, whose mind was engrossed in thoughts of formless God, was enchanted by the sight of Rama and Lakshmana. The thought of the unseen almighty disappeared from his mind and was replaced by the thoughts of Shri Rama. It was obvious because who would like to run after the unseen if he is fortunate enough to witness the real.
Watch this enchanting episode of Ramayana taken from the Bala Kanda narrated beautifully by Swami Mukundananda.

Seriously I am spellbound, the level of Janak Ji's devotion, how selfless, pure and from heart. He is an idol for all devotees and I am blessed to know his art of loving Lord Ram. Such a great saint he is, very absorbing lecture by Swami ji.

Indeed Ajit. The spiritual position of King Janak would even outshine the majesty of great sages like Vasistha and Vyaasa. Two episodes makes it clear. First, when there was a dilemna of decision making during "Ram-Bharat" milaap in Ayodhya kaand. Even Vasistha who was over taken by the emotional surge of Bharat, he asked Janak to resolve the matter. Second, Vyaasa send his divine son Shuka to the palace of Janak to learn "Aatma vidya" and "Brahm vidya". It was this Shuka who later delivered Srimad Bhagavat Mahapuran to king Parikshit making way to his spiritual liberation. I would go one further step (more than any other reason) to say that Lord Ram chose Sita ji primarily because she was the daughter of great videha "Janak". Ram knew that Sita would exhibit all those qualities as "Vaidehi" and world knows it was a perfect decision. *Jai SiyaRam*

Very nice video clip! God is both with and without form, yet His form is far more blissful. A great gyani such as King Janak was spellbound by Lord Ram and couldn't get his eyes off of him due to his existing perfected absorption in the formless Brahman who was in front of him in His bodily form.

King Janak was worshipping nirakar brahma. When he experienced the bliss of the Lord Ram’s visually appealing and saakar form, then he was completely mesmerized . The bliss of divine love of sakaar brahma made the greatest videhi of all times king Janak forget his nirakar brahma. This is beautifully explained by Swamijee.

This is such a beautifully narrated katha! How interesting that in the treta yug, Mithila consisted of only pious and spiritually elevated people. The captivating description of why King Janak was so attracted to the princes of Ayodhya really makes sense in the way Swamiji has described it. Once a spiritually elevated person perceives the absolutely enchanting form of the Lord, the formless aspect becomes less enticing.

So nicely explained how the King Janak (Videharaj) attracted to the beautiful form of Lord Ram and Lakshman. Even he was a Brahma Janani and doesn't have the bodily perception, he got attracted to Supreme Lord in the form. This is clearly stating that the devotee who is in the path of Jnanayog will get attracted to the form of Lord and moves to Bhakti Yog. It is great to know The supreme Lord Shrikrishna mentioned King Janak's name in Bhagavad Gita(The Song of God). It's also amazing to know about the how virtuous people were living in Mithila and Ayodhya.

When you hear something good about certain person, you feel attracted towards that person and want to meet him/her. Similarly King Janaka had perfect knowledge about Lord but had never seen Him. Only when God graces soul, soul gets forcibly attracted to God and enjoys His Darshan.

Such is the beauty exuded in the divine form of Lord Rama and Lakshmana that a staunch worshipper of the formless such as King Janaka gets completely attracted. Janaka is not attracted by anything other than God and Lord Rama though in a form is still the same formless God possessing same powers and qualities with more attributes manifested such as the breathtaking beauty of his form and love oozing from his every pore.

Namaste Swamiji, Isn't that a trap to become attached to the bliss of the form? Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was also constantly in that bliss until he met a yogi who told him to chop off the head of Kali in order to reach the highest state of samadhi (nirvikalpa samadhi). I believe it's a trap to get caught up into maya. Those who have reached the state of Sahaja or Nirvikalpa samadhi say it's indescribable, beyond body/mind/time/space. God bless

Namaskar Swamiji , so well explained many thanks to you Along with vidheha , parushurama from Mahendra गिरी ,host of brahma rishis in dhandakarnya were deeply drawn from samadhi when parabrahma, paramatma Sriramachandra along with the divine mother Sita( energy/shakti of Srirama) and Sri lakshmana muni ( an amsa of sriram having a jiva aspect))set their foot in the forest, like iron filings getting attracted to magnet .It is believed that these brahma rishis were born again as gopika stree's to experience the ecstasy of madhurya bhava, gnana should mature into Bhakti , in introduction to Sri bhagavam Shankar charya ji's bhaja govindam(sung by the carnatic legend late MS subbalaksmi ji) late Rajaji Sir has commented that Bhakti and gnana are one and same and lead to the same goal, my humble submission is that according to Narada Bhakti sutra, Bhakti is superior to gnana, karma and yoga(raja)
