Waaaaaiiiiit up!!! Im listening to these finance conversations in KE and I have made commentary in past about our economic modus operandi, but actually hearing how the fiscal issues are being handled is very insightful. A few days ago, CS Kuria (Implementation nk) said Kenya is a D- country. Perhaps. But we have A and B students in government and leadership. The problem is WHO ARE WE STUDENTS OF!!!!? WHO IS OUR TEACHER!? Our problem is we are following the example of the wrong teacher! First colonial England, then Imperial America. The same way we are dealing with our budget and fiscal indiscipline issues, is yhe same that late stage capitalist America and Europe (Britain) are doing! In the US, because they have a Reserve Currency, politicians (and the Fed) have been kicking the debt can down the road for over 30 years!!! HOWEVER, yhe States and Local governments are not allowed to do that! They are way more constrained and forced into disciplined debt management! Of course this directly affects State and local government services and service delivery, but the Governors cannot, by executive fiat, change fiscal issues! Kenya is copying the wrong model to her peril.

Finally, we see another piece of the problem: Non-politicians (technocrats) whose job is to advise politicians are failing to to tell them the honest truth. The government advisor on this show is a typical example: Justifying bloated government spend. Now, if that is the mindset with which parliamentarians are being advised, it is no surprise that they have lost touch with reality.

Great convo with these 2, except for the constant but fallacious comparison of households with Government budgets; I subscribe to the modern monetary theory (MMT) that rubbishes this sort of comparison for the basic and real-world reason that, unlike households, Governments have the unique and unilateral ability to print their budgets into reality. This capacity to magically create fiat enables them to live stories above their means and tax collection revenues.

Q&A What is the main issue with Kenya's fiscal policy and budgeting process? - The main issue is the lack of coherence and accountability, leading to unrealistic revenue targets, excessive spending, and a growing debt service problem. What is the criticism of UDA's approach to disagreeing with the Treasury? - UDA is criticized for lacking the courage to disagree with the Treasury and for not having a coherent plan to address the flaws in their approach. What is the impact of tax cuts on small displacement motorcycles? - Tax cuts have led to a surge in the boda boda industry and deliveries, providing immense value and spurring growth without always requiring government spending. How does the budgeting process lack integrity? - The budgeting process lacks integrity due to a structural problem in how money is allocated, with a focus on paying debts and obligations before allocating funds to ministries and other areas. What is the government's approach to budget implementation and oversight? - The government's approach to budget implementation lacks accountability and oversight, with significant spending outside of parliamentary approval and a lack of action from Parliament to rectify the situation.

A brief check on Ferragamo watches reveals that they are not that expensive at approximately $1000. The way Ramah puts it you'd expect it to be at least far higher than $7000 but there are even $800 ones.

its hopeless cause no one is even asking the basic question -- "where do shillings come from? do they get taxed into existence or are they printed? remember we used to have the old shillings notes just 10 years ago and suddenly they changed? was it it out of taxes that the shillings changed? was it magic? or was it public policy and the use of institutions such as the treasury in printing this new money? are shillings scarce to the people that use them or to the entities that create them and force you to pay taxes in their currency? they are fooling us too is my point.

yeah and imagine they also were talking as if its the treasury that doesnt create shillings, as if the government needs our tax revenue to spend when we know thats not true. they even talk as if it is not true when they have mentioned the debts serikali get into from foreign markets. but shillings the treasury creates. they want us to think that its normal citizens that somehow are making shillings appear as if they aren't printed by the treasury or typed into existence by our commercial banks. They have many interviews where people have alternative perspectives which they seemingly agree with, but when it comes to government revenue in this discussion they just forget all the other ways the government generates money for projects -- bonds, loans, and state companies like the kenya pipeline etc. all of which do not include taxes -- which begs the question, whats the use of taxes? and what do they hope to do by raising taxes and presumably spending more money to track and measure if they are meeting their expected tax revenues.

There are NATIONAL PROJECTS for our common good, and there are local resources. These national projects/ resources are developed with money collected from ALL Kenyans. Let's not mix issues ...
