Islamic belief and scholarly accounts state that the revelation of the Quran began in 610 CE when the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad in the cave of Hira near Mecca. He recited the first verses of Surah Al-Alaq to Muhammad, who continued to receive revelations until his death in 632 CE. Abu Bakr is credited with compiling the Quran into a book format. As the Islamic Empire expanded, differing recitations were heard in far-flung areas, leading to the recompilation of the consonantal skeleton of the Quran for uniformity in recitation by Uthman ibn Affan. Hence, the Quran is also known as the Uthmanic codex. The process of compiling the Quran was conservative and avoided redactional bias. Arabic orthography continued to develop in the second century, documenting variant oral readings of the consonantal skeleton of the Quran in Quranic manuscripts. According to traditional Islamic beliefs, Muhammad, a trader in the Western Arabian city of Mecca, received the Quran's revelations during the month of Ramadan in 610 CE, marking the beginning of the Islamic faith.
