Ram Pump Small to Medium Creek Assessment

I take a local creek and run a site assessment for a small ram pump. This creek has a flow rate of at least 200 gallons per minute. To run the 1/2" ram pump you only need around 2gpm. I pump water to a height of 6 feet out of the water from only 1.5 feet of head pressure.

    Brilliant; I do love this technology; made a few pumps but sadly have no natural water source, so they just sit in my garage. Maybe one day I'll be able to use them. Your videos are very well done and I like the way you present the information. Keep them coming.

    If I have a fairly level river behind the house with a good heavy flow (but still to shallow for a good river pump), could I possibly put a larger mouth on the intake to funnel water in? Hopefully increasing the head pressure?

    Is it possible to operate a ram pump without head by funneling the kinetic energy of a low sloped but fast moving stream into the pump?

    Have you tried 1/2 “ swing valve and 3/4” one way valve? Wondering if the larger one way valve could reduce friction and increase flow.

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    That might be a fun test. Allow more water into the pressure tank per cycle. I assume if you went too big on the secondary valve it could stop the pump. Worth a try.

    Can you use somewhat flexible pipe (black poly?) for part of the drive pipe and use hard pipe for the final 25' {or another distance}? What are the tradeoffs (TANSTAAFL applies I'm sure) of such a system?

    I have a very winding creek with a flow very similar to the one in this video. Will I be able to make a pump that can function with out a straight run drive pipe?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can use a drive pipe that is not straight. It is better to have the pipe as straight as you can get it but the pump will work just fine with some turns.

  • @fishwithme1
    @fishwithme14 жыл бұрын

    It would help greatly if you increase the size of your supply pipe for example the half inch pipe you have supplying the pump should be increased to two in to get more water flow to the pump and more head pressure. Am I correct?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    4 жыл бұрын

    The best effeciency is to use the same size drive pipe as waste valve. however if you have an issue with low head pressure like I do here you can tilt the valve to reduce the closing weight of the flap. This will allow the pump to start with less head pressure. if you go with a larger drive pipe you might run into issues with the valve closing and not reopening.

    If you use a wider pipe on the intake side and reduce it down so it fits the pump, will the head pressure increase?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    No the head pressure would be the same no matter what drive pipe size you have. Its best to match the drive pipe to pump size.

    If a ram pump was used without much uphill, maybe 2 ft up per 100, but in a relatively flat yard 100ft from source in a closed pvc loop (300 linear ft), would the pump be effective, considering the closed pvc loop was mildly perforated for a sprinkling/leaking effect (hopefully increasing back pressure due to small enough holes.) Does that question make sense? Will it work? I did not mention pipe diameter, is there a diametere that would make this possible in the delivery pipe

Check online for the Plans and BOM’s Depending on what size diameter to want it can be built for less than $ 150 Canukistan rupals. (Lol) Fellow Canuck here , from Alberta.

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    4 жыл бұрын

    You mean the end of the delivery pipe? At that point the pressure is so low it would not do much. The reason the valve goes close to the pump is to relieve pressure of the water column going up the hill.

  • @mauroalvarezsi

    @mauroalvarezsi

    @@LandtoHouse i do recall you did that on one of your videos and it did put out more water due to being able to build up more pressure. just not sure how much more vertical you can go utilizing check valves.

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    Oh you mean place a non return valve in the delivery pipe close to the pump. Yes that helps keep pressure off the pump and allows you to pump up a little more.

    Can you use ram pump on 30-45 gallon rain barrel as your source..?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can. Do keep in mind that the ram pump uses a lot of water to operate. So if you had a 1000 gallons in a tank and used a 1.25" ram pump with 8gpm usage. That tank will be empty in 125 minutes.

    Hi why don’t u attach a funnel or a hopper tub to help increase the volume of flow in the water intake?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    5 жыл бұрын

    From my understanding a pipe with known head pressure will only pull a certain amount of water by gravity. Even if a funnel is added it will not increase the flow rate.
