Ramón Salazar - A Deconstruction of Villainy

Ойындар

Ramón Salazar is the least sympathetic villain in Resident Evil 4, and that's on purpose.

During Ramón's boss fight, when he starts losing, he gets increasingly angry and upset. But what's interesting is that he at one point calls Leon a "tiny, ugly, sickly half-wit" and screams that "You should never have been born, demon child", lending even more credence to the idea of him metaphorically fighting "himself" by casting Leon as "Pulgercito". He's not just cruel, sadistic and petty, but he's also deeply self-loathing. Like you said, nobody respects or likes Ramón. As his final battle shows... that includes himself.

The physical contrast between Salazar and Leon is interesting, especially when you consider Salazar's own insecurities about his appearance. Leon is a fairly tall, well-built, extremely handsome young man who is fairly close in age to Salazar, who is short, ugly, and physically weak. Leon is, in many ways, what Salazar wishes he could look like.

A bit about the Don Quixote thing: it's hard to know anything about the story without knowing that Don isn't the hero of it. He's the title character, sure, but he's a fanatic of a dead world of feudalism and knighthood and, even in his most benign moments, he profoundly messes everything else up for the other characters. If Luis refers himself to that, it's only because (and the last non-cutscene conversation you have with him basically says this in other words) he knows how far in the wrong he was that he sincerely believes that the only way his story can really end is in tragedy. To that end, it's more like Luis is accepting his role as the story's bumbling idiot than using it as any form of escapism.

I kinda feel bad for Salazar. To have a disability like dwarfism is already rough when the world isn’t built to accommodate you, but to also be subject to mockery your whole life would probably make anyone really insecure and want to lash out. It doesn’t excuse what he chose to do, but there is something to be said about how media often codifies any kind of deformity or disability as a sign that someone is inherently untrustworthy.

The world isn't built to accomodate anyone, any more than a hole in the road is built to accomodate a puddle of water. For any of the villagers, it would be nearly impossible to survive without a lot of help. But Salazar has so much wealth and such a ludicrous castle, it overshadows irl castles that were known to be absolutely nuts. He has anything tailor-made for him, he has servants do everything for him. He doesn't have to work and he's never going to starve. Most wouldn't dare to mock him because of his position. He may not have had it easy, but he would have it easier than most people who have this condition. And most of those people irl don't turn out nasty evil bastards who hate everyone.

Salazar really does embody a lot of the dark side of aristocracy. Not quite Prince Andrew dark but still. That the servant was so loyal to the memory of Ramon's father suggests that the late count was a decent human being at worst and at best a generous leader. And it's that kind of charisma and kind heartedness from individual founders and leaders that makes some aristocrats insufferable. There's an old saying that goes along the lines of "no worse birth than to be born to a great man." How do you think it'd be being born to an entire dynasty of great men? As an aristocrat Ramon was always going to be in someone else's shadow. Be it his father's, his grandfather's, Hipólito the Demon Sealer, or Gregorio the Conqueror, Ramon was more likely than not going to be in his ancestor's shadow. Combine that with his dwarfism and illness and I think that destroyed his ego. I think he keeps bringing up "knights and princess fair" because when he was a boy before the illness hit or the dwarfism became clear that's what he wanted to be, a knight. He probably dreamed of being a knight when he was in the throes of illness. His joining Saddler may also have been as much a desire to free himself from the legacy of Gregorio the Conqueror as much for religious beliefs and personal loyalty to Saddler. If he renounces the man who made his family in the first place he may think he has become a new Gregorio liberating a castle for his king. For all of his petty pride Ramon's a slave to his family's legacy and the inadequacy he feels not just from the greatness cast by those ancestors but also his own ailments.

It isn't made explicit in the game, and it's purely my interpretation of the visuals, but I think there's yet another reason for Salazar to hate Leon so much. Leon is a brave, healthy, handsome and strong man, going out of his way to protect innocent people. Leon IS the valiant knight Salazar craves to be so much. Leon is everything Salazar is not. Leon is very hands-on, Salazar is very remote, Leon is no-nonsense and snarky, Salazar is all about theatrics and grandeur, etc etc. And on the characters trying to live out the fantasy only to be violently interrupted - it's so interesting that it's done to Luis by Leon's dark reflection, yet another parallel between Leon and Krauser. They both play the role of an iceberg that crushes the ship of another character's fantasy dreams, but Luis dies while managing to do something good in his troubled life, honoured and respected by his newfound friend, and Salazar deservingly goes out undignified, with the castle gates literally falling on his body

7:16 Incorrect. It's actually heavily insinuated that Ramón is the devil that took Diego's life. A piece of environmental story telling is what gives it away. After the knife fight with Krauser with Leon returning to the surface, you can go back track to Salazar's throne room (where you can get a Golden Egg that can take away half his health during his fight if thrown at him). Besides his throne there are two large portraits, one of a woman and one of a man. Leon even comments that these must be his parents. If you look closer at the painting of Diego, you'll notice that you can collect a boot knife that's lodged in the former counts heart. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don't believe so.

Its kind of implied that part of the reason Ramon killed his father to ascend to his throne prematurely is because he was ridiculed and wasn't respected even by his father. And during the boss fight he starts to basically project all his insecurities onto Leon. Salazar is still a spiteful, *evil* little shit, but knowing the circumstances that helped shape him into it definetly adds a flavor of tragedy to his character.

Edit: "Pulgarcito" translates to 'little thumb'. The female servant was likely making fun of his childlike build. Children suck their thumbs, and Ramon looks like a child (physically, not the face). She basically called him a puss 🤣 In the Og RE4, I probably would've spared Salazar if the game let me do so. In RE4:R, I'll gladly turn him into a pincushion with my maxed out Red9 🤣 I enjoyed exploring the castle, they really outdid themselves with the armored Ganados. "Nighty night, knight!"

Absolutely loving your videos and channel, great work all around. I feel you missed an important piece of Salazar's background here, at least as I interpreted it in my playthrough. During his boss fight he's saying things like "small small man," and "Pulgarcito", and then as he starts losing the fight he gets more personal, saying (i think) things about Leon being a vile little child. As you pointed out, it's clearly projecting stuff from his past. Take all that with the entry in the book about his *father*, which called him "The Severe" and "exceedingly strict".... I think we can piece together that because he was born small and probably deformed even before the disease, that his aristocrat father hated him and called him terrible things, possibly physically abused him. This could explain why he killed his father (I didn't put that together, but I've gathered it from other commenters to this video). This also very nicely ties elaborates on why Ramon became the first Salazar to forsake their duties in keeping the plagas locked away. It also connects to him being disgusted that his ancestor's blood flowed through his veins. It doesn't make him likeable at all, but because of these things I definitely felt he was a bit humanized in the remake Edit to add: After thinking about it we can maybe even surmise that Saddler was the first father figure in Ramon's life to (at least pretend to) show him approval

I'm starting to wonder if Salazar's new design didn't take some inspiration from how governors, high lords and nobles are generally depicted in the Warhammer 40k universe. They are generally fat, gross looking, weak willed individuals with egos the size of solar system that deflates quickly at the sight of real danger. The product of centuries of nepotism, negligence, overindulgence, and probably too much cross breeding. There's also the clothes Salazar is wearing - if you dropped him right into W40k, he can pass for a hive-spire's lord without difficulties. You'd just need a bio-mechanical eye or prosthetic arm to complete the look.

Off-topic addendum to your great Saddler analysis, some might find interesting: The part about Saddler stripping the servant Ganados of their individual identity really resonated with me. When I played through the Island, I wondered why the writers/designers stripped the Ganado soldiers of their Illuminados pendants they wore in the OG around their necks. Now I finally understood that that was probably to further emphasize their loss of individuality. Because if they're all just extensions/limbs of a collective hive mind, why would they wear anything to identify them? Identification, even as member of a cult or gang, makes only sense for individuals, to discern them from *other* individuals who are not in the cult. But if all Ganados are basically just cells of a body, why would you need to discern them in the first place, when they're all the same anyway? Of course, the Verdugo, for example, did wear distinct clothing. But one can think of that more as the result of task specific specialisation, just like human somatic cells will also have myriads of different shapes depending on what role they fulfill in their respective tissue. And those two are bodyguards and thus in a more or less representative role. We know from the credit pictures that Salazar at least in the beginning actually took them with him into the yet normal village, and you can't show up with your beloved insect-humanoid pets right at your first date with your future slaves without some degree of obfuscation, now can ya? Of course our little Lords preference for roleplaying and dramaturgy also played a role here (no pun intended), I assume.

A bit on the aristocratic thing, most where actually pretty ok and often the local population would like them, especially if they where as good as the previous generations of dukes, but well Ramon would be loathed because of his tyranny not because he is an aristocrat. In Germany for example when the monarchies where abolished after WW1 most germans countries where against it and even today the local houses have some sway.

Please, please -PLEASE. For all that is good and true: I'd love to hear your impressions and analysis about a villain getting more colors over and over the years: A twisted, tortured soul who long for attachment and control people to keep them close; overly reactive over rejection commonly translating as bursts of fury towards their loved ones. A desolated mind which chooses destruction over tending to his psychological needs; and on the verge of that -a single parent who was left alone to raise a child from a failed marriage, looking for a mother figure to his boy, and reciprocal love that he never have. In their last movie, a desperate shout to justify his violence and psychosis: "You're gonna suffer as I suffered!!". All in all, heavy indications of a traumatic and violent childhood turning into a borderline personality disorder. Which I can relate it personally. And yes, I'm talking about Bowser, the King of Koopas.

You're absolutely correct about the story being second place. This is true, in fact, for every single Capcom game. And can sometimes lead itself to incredibly interesting stories. Monster Hunter World for example, I can't fault anyone for saying that it's a game without story, that you're there to fight big creatures and anything else is just to contextualize. But the entire jouney to a new world as an aspiring hunter, learning the ecology of a new place, finding new monsters and figuring out their place in the ecosystem and watching your character grow from 5th fleet newbie into the Sapphire Star is incredibly endearing. That world feels more alive that a _lot_ of RPGs I've played, and it virtually has "no" story. Same thing with Devil May Cry. The series had a serious, despite arrogant, Dante in the first two games. The third one was a prequel to all, and he was a complete jokester. He simply mocked everything and everyone and that game was the turning point in popularity. THAT is the Dante everyone knows. So obviously, 4 and 5 had the same Dante as 3. That means that he went from funny Dante, to somber Dante, and then funny Dante again. It seems inconsistent, but the end of DMC3 has him losing his brother for a second time and forces him to take his job seriously. Hence serious Dante for 1 and 2. He then loses people he cares about in these two games as well, and DMC2 has him handing out his coin to Lucia near the end, a coin that he used to decide what to do. By that point he realized that taking things seriously wasn't related to how he acts or feels. He was himself in DMC3, so he simply returns to that while having more life experience to not push away family and friends anymore. All of these cases might be reading too much into it and you probably can find plot holes in it, but they're undeniable charismatic stories. Even if it's a side effect of focusing on gameplay and fun.

You’ll notice that in the beginning of DMC4, Dante is also solemn and serious as he executes Sanctus and fights off the guards. It’s only when he sees Nero’s arm and feels his possible familial connection that he begins to lighten up a little, and of course as the game goes on his spirits raise more and more and by the end he’s his normally joking self again.
