Ram 4th Generation DS A/C Evaporator Coil Cleaning

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Because of low HVAC air flow and a musty smell, I wanted to inspect the A/C evaporator coil under the dash. I found the coil caked in mud and nearly plugged. The video will go through the steps to inspect and clean the coil without having to disassemble the dash to assess the coil. The cleaning restored the air flow and the smell is much better.
Total time for the project was a little over an hour.
Check out my other videos on this truck where I put a new frame under it because of accident damage.

    Does air from the blower flow through this evaporator coil before the heater core? The air flow when on heat doesn’t seem as strong as when it’s on cool.

    Yes there was a huge improvement in air volume and temperature regulation. Before I would run the fan on 4 and it couldn't keep up. Now I keep it on 1 and it's cold in the truck. The truck was always musty smelling before too... That's gone. Make it easier on yourself and get the cleaner specifically for cars that has the flexible extension hose.

  • @ironicallyengineered2486

    @ironicallyengineered2486

    3 жыл бұрын

    The evaporator drain hole is at the bottom of the drain pan and probably won't work very well. Your best bet would be to remove the blower and go in that way. You can't get to the left side of the coil very well because of a baffle, however. But if you have a can of coil cleaner with a long hose you can possibly fish it up far enough. The next issue would be getting the water hose in far enough to rinse it.

If you watched the video, you would have noticed that the HVAC unit has a condensate drain, so almost all of the water runs out of the firewall onto the ground...

    MY QUESTION IS WHY DID YOU GO THROUGH ALL THIS CUTTING OUT THE AIR DUCT WHEN YOU COULD HAVE JUST USED DWD2 CLEAN AIR SYSTEM AND ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS DRILL A 3/16 HOLE AND WHILE INJECTING THE DWD2 WITH THE FAN ON AND THEN LET IT SIT FOR 10 OR 15 MINUTES AND TURN THE AC BACK ON HIGH MAX WITH THE FAN ALL THE WAY UP AND YOUR EVAPORATOR WOULD HAVE BEEN SPOTLESS AS WE DO IN OUR SHOP ALL THE TIME. I'M SORRY BUT THIS SOUNDED VERY DISTURBING TO US. I KNOW WE DON'T CUT HOLES IN PEOPLE'S EVAPORATED DUCTS, BUT IF THAT'S YOUR CAR THEN THAT'S COOL BUT THERE IS A WAY EASIER WAY TO DO THIS AND YOURS IS NOT IT

    My apologies that the video soooo disturbing that you felt the need to reply in all caps. Your method may work for a system that only has a light amount of dirt accumulation. But when you have a situation like mine where the evaporator is completely clogged all the way through with dirt and no air is moving (even on high fan) then simply spraying some cleaner on the coil is not going to do anything. You have to get in there with some water to force the dirt out of the coil. Cutting a small access hole in the box and covering it over with some Aluminum tape is also not going to hurt anything. The coil is clean and it's blowing cold, forceful air. So I'm happy with it and I didn't get screwed out of $180 to have a shop do it.

  • @willsrestorations

    @@ironicallyengineered2486 dwd2 will remove completely plugged evaporators and heater coils when used properly you just leave it in the system for an extra 15 minutes and they come up absolutely spotless so I don't know what you're talking about. Your process of cleaning the evaporator was a little extreme and not necessary, if that works for you then that's fine but hopefully nobody watches this video and follows your suggestions cuz they were ridiculous as most KZread videos. You have been inducted into the KZread defective club where you and your fellow members can discuss ways to be smarter. GOOD LUCK

    Well it took 30-45 min and about $5 to clean it this way and it works like new. I suppose you could pull the dash... And probably the seats... And drop the column... And remove the center console if you have one... And the evaporator box and replace the evaporator. Oh don't forget now you have to suction and refill the A/C system. Sounds like a 30 min job too.
