Ralph Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Музыка
This masterpiece has haunted me for a very long time, and I never tire of it. I realise this piece has received ample coverage here, but I wanted to include it in my coverage of the English pastoral composers.
I leave it to Rob Young to elucidate:
"The Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is time travel enacted in music; a temporal bridge between the Tudors and the modern Edwardians. It operates in space as well as time. Vaughan Williams divided the string section into two blocs which throw call-and-response repetitions at each other as if from either side of the choir stalls. A quartet occasionally rises up, but in the opening bars all are united, drawing a veil of mystic chords around the listener. Tallis's lines are furtively picked out in the lower register, and then all strings rhapsodically "sing" the tune in one of the composer's most lustrous, luminescent pieces of writing. Recurring throughout is an ascending phrase in the Phrygian mode -- a scale Vaughan Williams detected repeatedly in English folk music. This motif, sounding like an ecstatic awakening, obsessed him: he used it in The Pilgrim's Progress to denote the Christian pilgrim arriving at his goal, the Celestial City. It recurs as a portal ushering the listener through each of the Fantasia's brief, concentrated segments, all the way to the final unison chord which, if struck correctly, conjures the illusion of a church organ". Rob Young of the Guardian Newspaper.
I took these pictures in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England, in the Spring of 2012. The Royal Cypher "ER" (Elizabeth Regina - Queen Elizabeth) at 10:38 is of hazel in a fir background at Bramley Dale, which I photographed from Chatsworth. This striking hillside tribute was planted in commemoration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.

This is music to touch the soul and elevate the human spirit. It is for the English, for all the British, and for everyone else touched by its beauty. It is for everyone. It is wonderful.
I am a Scot, expatriate for most of my life. Nothing has ever brought me back to these islands in my dreams more fully than this music. Laugh, weep, ponder, sigh...this sings so completely of the dignity of the extraordinary peaks, dales, seas and horizons we call "Home".
As English as Test Match Special, a buttered scone & the smell of an old chapel. Glorious x
He was indeed a force in English music , who managed to define and establish something of what England means to the soul , the swaying lustrous chords were a decisive break from classical harmony and have a richly organic natural feel .
Somehow this piece stirs a nostalgia for something I can’t quite bring into focus. It’s something about England and my life in the country I love. Always brings me to tears.

Maybe what you can't focus is that ephemeral word "love". I share it for this wonderful land, its people and its history.

I feel 😢 in seing your country flooded by non whites😂
I used to listen to this on a continuous loop while studying - it has worn a very deep track in my mind, and my whole being, and is always welcome!
This is truly a masterpiece of music. I can readily relate to your comment that you do not tire of it.
This version is played slower than usual; and with good quality sound, I like it. Nice pictures too. Plus the whole piece is there. This music makes a good portal to enhanced states of consciousness. rwr
thanks for taking the time to add this, along with the photographs that add so much to the enjoyment.
Your posts are the best of English classical music. Thank you! Your filming is what transcends others, with the music, they become heartbreakingly beautiful. ❤️💔🎶
exquisite.. masterful imagery accompanying what is one of the most beautiful, pastoral compositions written.... many thanks...
I felt cozy listening to my favorite Vaughan Williams' masterpiece, and watching the footage of these scenery put me in a mildly good mood . If there were no Vaughan Williams'works , I would feel that the music world is like the vapid beer From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
I prefer the Sir Adrian Boult, but this is beautiful - of course! The sound of England. And one of the reasons I could never leave her.
There will always be an England.
This is beautiful and a favourite piece of mine to listen to. If you are familiar with Hannah Hauxwell and the programme which highlighted her life you will know that this was used as background music. It is music for the soul, makes me feel alive and also very emotional at the same time. Thank you 🙏🏻 🌈🎶🤗

I am indeed familiar with dear Hannah Hauxwell, Samantha. She was an inspiration to many! I couldn't believe her privations.

AntPDC I was so lucky to visit Low Birk Hatt yesterday with my husband, we also visited the cemetery where she rests. This made me so happy as I have admired her for a long time. A beautiful place and I can see why it was so difficult for her to leave it behind. I searched for this music as lately I have been watching the programmes again and enjoy it so much. It really is therapy for the soul, especially at the moment. Take care 🤔
Particularly apt and touching today, 9/9/22. A day after our beloved Queen died. A wonderful and hopefully lasting tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II in Derbyshire.
Maravillosa y nostálgica música..¡¡¡
love this music, relaxing
PS. Just remembered Tallis was composing in the first Elizabethan era.
Your channel is inspirational!

Glad I don't read the Guardian, the analysis sucks all the beauty out of this wonderful composition. Enjoy, you don't need to deconstruct.

Does anybody read that miserable, lefty, 18970's anti-British rag anymore? It's so up its own perpetually-depressing bottom I'm surprised its so-called journos haven't topped themselves. They must be choking on their North London hummus and lettuce salad after reading about the UK's massive economic growth post-Brexit, as projected by the Bank of England today. And as for the Hartlepool by-election, the Labour Party is now finished because it bears zero resemblance to it origins.
