If you want the music to work in movies with musicals, people should look at Disney animated movies like the little mermaid and see how Howard Ashton wrote the music to integrate with the story. People would easily transition with lead up conversations to start singing in the traditional of emotional projections and thoughts that come from operatic styling.

When it came out I rented it and brought it to my friend who had bought a new TV and wanted some of that 1080p Blu-ray goodness to test it with. He didn't know what it was but definitely expected an action movie. His face when they started singing was glorious! Slowly turning to me, looking like he was experiencing something truly unbelievable, doubt, shock, "Are... are you fucking serious? It's not like this the entire film, right?"...

"live studio audience" works when they can play with the audience. Getting them to anticipate the joke or even catching a castmember corpse on stage. Same thing with stand up. The go to example for me is the classic where Kevin Smith tells of how he almost made Superman. And the moment he gets to Wild Wild West he pauses, and the audience looses their shit as they realize what the punchline he had been spending 15-20 min building up to was. But if all one has seen are the factory canned laughter... Then, I can understand the hatred people have towards audience laughter in sit coms. Disney Kids shows are downright bizarre to watch as every single line gets a canned laughter. No jokes. Just every single line. And BBT makes my face twitch with uncontrollable hatred as it is just so insulting to watch. If possible, I think it's even worse than watching an Adam Sandler film. Then, there are some otherworthly things like how in the 60's and 70's they added laugh tracks to animated shows like The Flintstones and Scooby Doo. You can literally hear the tape splices as the laughter is cut into the soundtrack. But getting back to the examples given in this video. I love IT Crowd. British sit coms in general have long been far superior at this strange art of sound only audiences. I think it's like how waves combine in signals. When you identify with the live studio audience, find the same thing funny as them, then the inclusion is enhancing the experience. But when you are not on the same page as the audience, the experience is cripplingly alienating. And you end up resenting not only the show, but question the competence if the crowd around you as well. So for me. I have no problem with live studio audiences. If they indeed are live. If you get the feeling they are actually watching the same show. And if you sync with their experience. If not all of those criteria can be met, then the audience is counterproductive. And you probably have even worse problems.

  • @SkyWingFeather

So it does have a plot, but it’s not well-explained. Basically all the cats gather under this moon every year and choose one cat who will go on to the next of their nine lives. All those songs about the cats are those cats volunteering to go. So it’s pretty grim when you think about it.

The way musicals are supposed to flow is that you songs are for when the characters are overtaken with emotions so great talking alone can't describe them, and when even words fail you dance. To use death note as a example, Light writing in the book is a poor time to place a song because he's perfectly in control of himself. You'd place the song after he realizes he's a double murderer. The song is light trying to rationalize it to himself and the begining of his God complex. Basically this song from Sweeny Todd kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZ6XrsSfhb26aaQ.html
